Just as Yvette was about to hang up, the caller sensed it and quickly switched his tone. โYve, donโt hang up! Iโve got something important!โ
Yvette paused, her finger hovering over the hang-up button, then brought the phone back to her ear. โWhat is it?โ
On the other end, Joe was frustrated. He was the bassist of the powerful Sun Fall gang, and everyone in the underworld respected him. But with Yvette, he felt compelled to submit. On her first day as his mentor, he'd been severely beaten, breaking a leg. He'd fought back, only to receive a brutal lesson in obedience.
โYve, why are you so harsh? You left me! Whatโs so exciting in Clusia? Lions? Tigers? You could go, but why not take me? Iโm stuck here dealing with the old man. I canโt eat, sleep, or even enjoy dating!โ Joe groaned.
Yvette stayed on the line knowing Joe, however unreliable, wouldn't call her in the middle of the night for idle chat. She cut through his rambling. "Two minutes. Get to the point."
Joe paused. โBraydon contacted me.โ
โBraydon?โ Yvette was confused. Lately, Joe had been berated by his grandfather and had to watch Braydon, a maniac who only behaved normally around Yvette.
โIโm not sure whatโs going on with him. Heโs been asking about you and watching me. He offered me a bunch of new weapons and a ten percent cutโbillions of dollarsโto find out where you are! Luckily, I refused. Otherwise, heโd have shown up at your door. But heโs dealing with family dramaโhis fatherโs illegitimate son is causing troubleโso he might be occupied for a while. Serves him right,โ Joe laughed.
โThanks,โ Yvette replied. She rarely expressed gratitude, but she knew how hard Joe worked to protect her secret. Such a huge profitโฆ even without mentioning it to his grandfather, explaining it wouldn't be easy.
โYve, treat me better! Look out for me,โ Joe tried to act cute.
Yvette chuckled. โCanโt really look out for you, but Iโll send you some internal documents from the Storm Wind gang later.โ
Joe shouted with excitementโthis was worth far more than billions! For decades, Storm Wind and Sun Fall had clashed in southern Ameria. With this intel, he could finally defeat them.
Yvette felt his happiness. She hadnโt shared the information earlier to avoid involvement. It annoyed her, but she disliked owing favors. Any future trouble? She didnโt care.
After hanging up, Yvette dialed another number. The call connected quickly. โThis is Yvette,โ she said.
The voice on the other end was incredulous. โYvette? Is that you, Ms. Zeller?โ
โPut Nathan on the line,โ Yvette replied, her tone icy.
The transfer was immediate. They knew her reputation. Higher-ups had instructed them to connect her call immediatelyโno exceptions. The person giggled; he could brag about speaking to Yvette.
Within five seconds, a deep voice said, โVene, this is Nathan.โ
Yvette gazed out into the moonlight. โKeep an eye on him.โ
Nathan knew his impulsive brother was searching for Yvette. Heโd tried to stop him, but once Braydon fixated, even their grandfather couldnโt stop him. He felt helpless; he wished Braydon would never find Yvette.
He explained, โYvette, you know Braydon. Heโs so powerful now, even Grandpaโs afraid. I canโt hold him back.โ
Yvette replied coldly, โThatโs your problem. If you canโt, Iโll send him away for good.โ
