"Let's go," said Yvette, snapping Lucas and Tina back to reality.
Lucas was shocked. Yvette looked exactly like Lilian Zeller, Zachary Chambers' first wife—the current head of the Chambers family. No wonder Mr. Chambers recognized Yvette immediately. They were practically identical; in fact, Yvette was even more striking.
An idea sparked in Lucas's mind. He'd known Zachary since childhood and knew his obsession with the mysterious Lilian—he would have given up the Chambers family for her. If Lilian hadn't run away while pregnant, the current "Mrs. Chambers" wouldn't be Nellie.
With Yvette's resemblance to Lilian, Zachary's attitude was unclear. But one thing was certain: Lucas couldn't offend her. Setting aside his disdain, he bowed respectfully. "Ms. Zeller, you are a Chambers by birth. Your mother left after a disagreement with Mr. Chambers. He recently received news about you and sent me to bring you home."
He lowered his head under Yvette's gaze. She appeared calm, but exuded more pressure than any elite woman he'd ever met. He felt uneasy, sweat beading on his back.
Most girls would be thrilled to leave the village and become a wealthy family's daughter in Seacrity. Yet Yvette remained too calm. Lucas felt something was off.
"I must have been crazy to think she's a fairy," Tina thought. "She's just a country girl trying to replace Ms. Winona Chambers." Seeing Lucas's respectful demeanor, she reluctantly followed suit, her expression disdainful.
Yvette observed their reactions, her indifference sharpening. Without a word, she grabbed her black backpack and walked out.
Lucas was confused. Had she known they were coming? Only a few in the Chambers family knew. How did the news reach such a remote place? Her demeanor suggested she knew something. He hesitated, unsure what to say.
Tina, however, saw Yvette's silence as a facade. "You must be so happy to leave this unbearable place, Ms. Zeller," she said.
Lucas wanted to interrupt but held back, finding Tina useful as a pawn. Winona Chambers' maid is too clueless, he thought.
Yvette shot a cold glance at Lucas, then at Tina. "You're annoying," she said, ignoring them completely.
Tina's face flushed with anger. Before she could retort, Lucas glared fiercely, silencing her. Every servant at the Chambers residence knew Winona favored Tina and treated her respectfully. It had been a long time since anyone had embarrassed her. She didn't dare confront Lucas, directing all her resentment toward Yvette.
To teach them a lesson, Yvette chose the toughest path down the mountain. An hour's trek was merely exercise for her, but for the town-dwellers, Tina and Lucas, it was a different story.
Reaching the mountain's foot, their appearances were strikingly different. Yvette looked carefree; the others were a mess, their clothes covered in grass and scratches.
Lucas understood Yvette's punishment. Feeling indignant, he straightened up. "Ms. Zeller, the car is over there."
Seeing her indifferent expression, he continued, "Tina offended you, and according to family rules, she should be punished. But as Ms. Winona Chambers' maid, I can't do that. I'll report this to Mr. Chambers when we return."
"Quite the scheming butler," Yvette thought amusedly. "No wonder he's served Zachary so long." Making a fuss would make her seem petty, damaging her reputation. Ignoring it, however, might lead to her being manipulated by the Chambers family, and even everyone in Seacrity.
"What a tough spot!" Yvette gave Lucas a half-smile, making his heart skip a beat.
