Listen to this chapter:

James was momentarily speechless. “Who is she? Didn’t you already explain everything?”

Jay’s face reddened further. He glanced helplessly at Marcus for support. Macrally stepped forward, subtly positioning himself between Jay and James. With a hint of exasperation, he said, “Mr. Owens, you know he’s timid. Don’t scare him.”

James sighed, looking at both of them. “Fine. This is Yvette. Haven’t you two always wanted to meet Siren? Well, here she is.”

Jay and Marcus were stunned. Jay, losing his composure, bolted from behind Marcus, his face a picture of shock. He felt as if something were lodged in his throat, unable to speak, except to exclaim, “Holy cow!” He’d always imagined Siren as an older woman—at least in her fifties. The groundbreaking research and key theories didn't seem like the work of someone in their twenties. He couldn't believe his ears. This was the biggest shock in over thirty years.

Marcus, though more composed, couldn't completely hide his disbelief. He thought, The great Siren I've been eager to meet is this young woman in her twenties? He, too, found it difficult to accept. Both men stared at Yvette, who remained impassive.

Jay struggled to speak. “Mr. Owens, are you saying… she’s in her twenties? You must be joking, right?”

Marcus’s hands twitched slightly as he regained his composure, then asked, “Mr. Owens, is she really Siren?”

James remembered his own astonishment upon learning that Yvette, barely in her twenties, was Siren. It had been a shock, so he understood Jay and Marcus's reactions. He said seriously, “Yes, Yvette is Siren, the person you’ve both admired for so long.”

Jay gasped. In a burst of enthusiasm, he rushed forward to shake her hand. Before Yvette could react, however, Marcus pulled Jay back. He held Jay’s arm firmly, his face cold, and asked through gritted teeth, “What do you think you’re doing?”

Jay was stunned. “What’s wrong with you? I just want to shake hands with the great Siren and maybe absorb some of her brilliance.”

Marcus’s expression flickered with discomfort before he released Jay. “Sorry, it was a reflex. Go ahead. No need to be so eager.”

Yvette watched, a slight, mischievous smile playing on her lips, her eyes cool. Jay, abandoning the handshake, continued to gaze at Yvette with admiration.

“Um, hello, Siren. I’m Jay. I’m a huge fan. If it weren’t for your papers, which provided clear guidance, we might still be stuck. But, wow, I didn’t expect you to be so young! I apologize for my earlier reaction. That was all because Mr. Owens didn’t explain properly,” he added, shooting an indignant look at James and huffing softly.

James thought, Why am I getting blamed for this?

Marcus’s attitude also shifted. Though still processing it, he acknowledged Yvette’s identity. He looked at her and thought, The younger generation is really outshining the older one! He said with admiration, “To think that Siren is a young woman in her twenties… It really shows that there are always greater talents out there.”

James nodded. “Alright, Yvette’s identity stays between the three of us. She doesn’t want it to become public knowledge.”

Jay and Marcus nodded. Jay couldn’t help but glance at Yvette again, concluding that a beautiful woman wasn’t necessarily just a pretty face; she could also be a highly skilled and mysterious expert.

“Siren, I’m currently working on Experiment No. 1, related to electromagnetism. Marcus keeps saying there’s something wrong with my process. Would you be interested in joining me?”

Yvette nodded slightly, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Sure. I’ve got something in an hour, so let’s start now.”

Jay thought, Isn’t she a bit too fast-paced? He gently reminded her, “Siren, maybe you want to review my previous experiment data first? One hour might not be enough.”

Yvette glanced at him and the equipment, already knowing which experiment he meant. She’d already completed it—it wasn’t difficult. Half an hour would suffice. With her hands in her pockets, she appeared relaxed. Frowning slightly, she looked at Jay, then Marcus and James, and asked in confusion, “One hour? Is it that hard?”

Marcus thought, Her question makes me want to punch her. James, however, chuckled. He saw nothing wrong with Yvette’s confidence. He thought his granddaughter had every right to be so confident.

“You two go ahead. I’ll wait here,” James said, smiling. He turned to Marcus, his expression serious. “You stay. I have something to ask you.”

Marcus was surprised. “Okay, Mr. Owens.”

Jay cheerfully led Yvette into the lab, while James and Marcus sat in James’s office. James made coffee, while Marcus poured himself water, clearly familiar with the place. James looked at Marcus, his concern evident. He thought, Only Marcus and Jay are still single among the lab members. They’ve been on countless blind dates, but none have worked out. Why is that? They aren’t bad-looking, have good jobs, and definitely aren’t short on money, yet no one seems interested in them.

“Have you been on any blind dates lately?” James asked.

Marcus took a sip of water, looked up with deep eyes, and said, “I have, but there was no chemistry.”

James bristled. He didn’t believe him. “No chemistry? The girl said you only spoke three sentences the whole time: ‘Hello,’ ‘I’m here,’ and ‘Goodbye.’ Is that how you approach a blind date? You were treating it like a business meeting!”

Marcus set down his glass and replied coolly, “We had no common interests.”

James pulled out his heart medication and took a couple of pills. Marcus’s eyes flickered; he was used to this. James calmed himself. Marcus was the type who wouldn't speak unless necessary, and when he did, his words could be infuriating.

Half an hour later, the lab door opened. Yvette emerged first, removing her face mask, followed by Jay. His body was stiff, his eyes glazed over as he stared at Yvette. No one knew what he was thinking, but he was clearly massively shocked. James and Marcus immediately stood. James fussed over Yvette. “Yvette, how was it? Are you tired?”

Yvette tilted her head, her face expressionless, her eyes as cold as ever. “Not tired,” she replied calmly.

Marcus went straight to Jay and asked softly, “What’s wrong?”
