Cas had a favorable impression of Zoe. Her eyes held a purity and clarity, devoid of ambition or greedโa rare quality in today's society.
Yvette nodded. "Go get the Chambers Group's financial reports for the past three years from downstairs and reorganize them."
Zoe was surprised. Is this a secretary's task? Can I handle documents of this level?
Lucas understood Yvette's intention to give Zoe a significant role. Seeing Zoe's stunned expression, he advised, "Organize them carefully and give them to Ms. Zeller."
Zoe nodded eagerly, bowed to Yvette, and went downstairs to the finance department.
Lucas placed the coffee on the table and prepared to leave. Yvette stood by the window, sunlight illuminating her face. Her long, delicate eyelashes cast a shadow, softening her striking profile.
Lucas was momentarily captivated. People said Yvette resembled Lilian, but Yvette, he thought, was even more beautiful. Lilian was gentle; Yvette, strong-willedโtheir personalities were vastly different.
Yvette's gaze met his; he quickly recovered. Bowing slightly, he said, "Ms. Zeller, your coffee."
Yvette sat back, her lips pressed together. "Thank you," she said softly.
Lucas chuckled; a cup of coffee hardly warranted such a response from Yvette. "Ms. Zeller," he continued, "if you need nothing further, I'll be just outside."
Yvette waved. "When visitors arrive, bring them in directly; no need to delay them."
Lucas was surprised. Someone's coming? Who, at this time?
Five minutes later, seeing Warron and Nelson emerge from the top-floor elevator, he was taken aback. How did Yvette know they were coming?
Warron and Nelson, usually at odds, seemed amicable. Nelson, the ever-smiling fox; Warron, beaming like a blooming flower.
Nelson told Lucas, "Mr. Osborne and I wish to see Ms. Zeller."
Lucas nodded calmly. "This way."
Nelson and Warron exchanged a look and followed him into the office. Yvette sat, idly toying with an intricately designed silver gun.
Nelson and Warron froze. How does she have a gun? In Clusia, gun ownership was strictly controlled. Both men frequented gun clubs and recognized the silver pistol as genuine.
A cold sweat broke out. Yvette was clearly not to be trifled with.
Nelson panicked, glancing at his watch. Five minutes until the act. Should I back out?
He gritted his teeth. There was no turning back. So what if she has a gun? Would she kill to silence me?
Yvette looked up, her eyebrows slightly raised, an air of indifference surrounding her. She crossed her legs and leaned back. "Something to say?"
Nelson and Warron's pre-planned approach vanished under her icy gaze. Only Lucas's call snapped them back to reality.
Their faces flushed with embarrassment. They were intimidated by someone younger.
Nelson composed himself. "Ms. Zeller, we just thought we'd drop by for a chat. By the way, did you personally decide on the layoff list?"
Warron nodded; he, too, had a difficult morning.
Yvette spun her chair, unwrapped a candy, and popped it in her mouth. Tilting her chin, she said, "Yes, I did."
Nelson and Warron burned with resentment but could only swallow their complaints. Yvette's arrogance left them feeling powerless. Their visit, however, was a delaying tactic; they feared Yvette might leave and disrupt their plan.
Yvette, noticing their distracted state, smirked. Aren't they starting yet? I'm about to doze off.
Lucas observed their strained conversation, his eyebrows furrowing. Are they this bored? He glanced at Yvette, increasingly puzzled. When did Ms. Zeller become so patient?
The incessant chatter gave him a headache. The door burst open, interrupting his thoughts.
Zoe rushed in, breathless. "Ms. Zeller, an emergency! A laid-off employee from finance is on the rooftop, threatening to jump unless the Chambers Group provides a satisfactory explanation."
The room's occupants reacted differently. Lucas was shocked; Nelson and Warron tense, yet a flicker of satisfaction in their eyes. Yvette remained calm. "Go get some water," she said to Zoe.
Zoe was confused. Does water matter now? She was anxious; a tragedy following the layoffs would ruin Yvette's reputation.
Nelson, equally worried, said, "Ms. Zeller, this is serious. If he jumps, even if we're right, we can't explain it. Especially with the layoffs, the media will exaggerate."
Warron added, "Ms. Zeller, Mr. Hegan's right. Let's go. You're the head of Chambers Group, our guiding light. We can't afford a tragedy."
Lucas's face grew serious. This was a critical situation. He stepped forward. "Ms. Zeller, allow me to handle this."
He resolved to protect Yvette's reputation, regardless of the risk.
Nelson and Warron were surprised. What's with Lucas? He's trying to replace Yvette's loyal companion. Nelson wouldn't let Lucas derail their plans. "Ms. Zeller," he said, "if you don't intervene, this will remain unresolved."
