Chapter 35
Emma reviewed her files: Saljanovas referring to her and Vere. At that time, she’d wanted to impress Vere to win him over later. Unexpectedly, Liam had overthought it.
“I was just about to tell you about this,” Emma said. “That boy’s name is Vere Hurlbutt, a financial genius. I know you’re in a power struggle with Brast, and you probably don’t lack for such people, but I assure you, with his abilities and loyalty, he could single-handedly outperform Brad’s entire team of hundreds.”
Liam raised his eyebrows. “So, when you gave him your phone number, it was for my sake?” His mood brightened. He’d never thought Emma would consider him.
“It was for your sake, but not entirely,” Emma said. “He’s a genius, and I also want his help. But no matter what, we’re just in a cooperative relationship; you really don’t need to be jealous of him.”
Emma then rubbed the hair beside Liam’s ear. “Still angry?”
Liam’s lips curved into a slight smile. “Mmm.”
“What does ‘Mmm’ mean?” Emma asked.
“Not angry anymore,” Liam said, pulling her close. “The person who set up the camera and maliciously sent photos will be found out tomorrow; I won’t let you suffer this loss.”
Emma sighed deeply, hugging Liam’s shoulder. “It’s so good to have you by my side.”
Later, Emma was on a call with Josiah.
“Aren’t you afraid Liam will kill you for deceiving him?” Josiah asked.
“What do you mean by deceive?” Emma said. “What I said is all true. Vere needs a job after returning from Nuverland, and even if he doesn’t come back, Hall Group has international industries; it’s the best choice for him to cooperate with Hall Group.”
“Tsk, but you’re clearly winning him over for yourself,” Josiah countered, exposing Emma’s real motive.
Emma’s forehead veins bulged as she changed the subject. “Liam’s people will find out who’s been secretly watching me by tomorrow. Josiah, are you guys so used to a peaceful life that you’ve become slower than Levi?”
Josiah sounded aggrieved. “Liam’s people aren’t ordinary workers; they’re well-known figures in the black market.”
“More well-known than you?” Emma asked.
Josiah pouted. “Yes.”
Emma was speechless. She hadn’t realized. Is it because Liam is hiding too deep, or have I become too accustomed to peace, causing my abilities to regress?
Just then, an email appeared on Emma’s computer. It was an invitation to Vark College’s Art Festival.
12:55 Sat 6 Jul
Thinking about the festival, Emma recalled Kate’s performance earlier. “Josiah, help me find out who will be performing at the school’s art festival this time.”
Josiah, having already gathered information, smirked. “Emma, guess who will be performing?”
“Who?”
“The great piano master Darell Wallaker, your co—” Josiah began, but Emma interrupted.
“Oh, it’s him,” Emma said, a smile playing on her lips. “Things are getting interesting. Let’s wait and see.”
Kate had troubled her earlier, but Emma hadn’t bothered with her; Kate wasn’t worthy. However, with the Art Festival approaching, even without Emma’s provocation, Kate was destined for defeat.
The Art Festival generated excitement at Vark College, particularly among the female students, all enthusiastically preparing to showcase their talents. Emma’s class was assigned to attend a lecture recital by Darell.
In the auditorium, Kate, resplendent in a grand dress and high heels, led Emma’s class. She was impeccably prepared. Darell was the piano master she’d admired since childhood. The Johnson family had previously tried to secure Darell as Kate’s teacher, but he’d only agreed to a meal before declining, stating he didn't take students. This didn't diminish Kate’s admiration.
Today, Kate intended to impress Darell. Even if she couldn’t become his student, a few words of praise would benefit her, enhancing her standing within the socialite circle.
Kate addressed the class. “When the event starts, stay put. No moving around, no noise. Don’t let me lose to other teachers, understood?”
Kate, only a few years older than the students, commanded little natural respect. Yet, her teacher title ensured obedience.
She then looked at Emma. “Emma, especially you. I know this kind of occasion might be unfamiliar, being a newcomer to the big city, but you need to adapt quickly. Don’t hold the class back and embarrass us.”
Emma, casually sitting with legs crossed, sipping soda and eating chips, was the most relaxed, even a bit wild.
Seeing this, Kate fumed. “Emma, did you hear what I said?”
“I heard you. You told us not to talk and perform well so you can catch Darell’s attention and gain his favor.”
The students laughed. Kate, furious, wanted to throw a cup, but restrained herself.
“You just wait,” Kate said before leaving. A female student commented, “Emma, you were so cool talking back to her just now.” Another added, “Yeah, I saw Miss Johnson’s face turn pale with anger.”
