Chapter 38
Gavin stumbled back a few steps after being pushed by Kelly. “What are you doing?” Kelly looked at Gavin in disbelief, her lips trembling.
To her surprise, Gavin wore an innocent expression. “What? What did I do?”
Menna noticed what was happening and walked over to ask, “Kelly, what’s wrong?”
Kelly clenched her fists, seemingly struggling to speak. “He… he touched my butt—”
Sienna’s expression instantly turned strange as she looked over at Gavin. Gavin’s face flushed red. He looked harmless, bewildered, and somewhat intimidated as he tried to defend himself. “Kelly, you must be mistaken. I didn’t touch you.”
“You did. You were standing right behind me just now,” Kelly retorted, her hands trembling with anger.
“Yes, I was. I was behind you, but I was reaching for something. You just happened to be in front of me. Maybe I accidentally brushed against you, but I’d never touch you on purpose,” Gavin explained anxiously.
It was definitely a lie. A woman’s intuition can be surprisingly accurate. Kelly was sure that Gavin did it on purpose.
Suddenly, Caleb appeared, asking, “What’s going on here?” He happened to be doing a store inspection and walked right into the tense scene between Kelly and Gavin.
Gavin looked like he’d just seen his savior and quickly spoke up. “Caleb, Kelly said I touched her, but I didn’t. She must be mistaken.”
Kelly immediately addressed Caleb. “Mr. Hartley, I’m not lying. He was standing right behind me and touched me. I clearly felt it.”
“I told you, I was just reaching for something. At most, I might’ve accidentally brushed against you, but I definitely didn’t touch you on purpose,” Gavin insisted.
The two of them stuck to their own sides of the story. Caleb looked at the pair for a moment, then turned to Kelly. “Kelly, a little contact can happen during work. There’s no need to make a big deal out of it.”
Kelly’s lips turned pale. “How is this making a big deal out of nothing? He molested me.”
Gavin shook his head repeatedly. “I didn’t! Don’t accuse me like that without proof.”
“Yeah, Kelly,” Caleb interjected, “Gavin’s my brother-in-law, and I know him well. He’s always been a decent guy. He wouldn’t, and couldn’t, do something like that.”
Kelly might have once thought Caleb was a decent guy, but not anymore. She suddenly remembered something Sienna had told her about Gavin before and quickly turned to her for help. “Sienna, you told me before about—”
She didn’t even finish before Sienna cut her off. “Kelly, I didn’t say anything. You must be misremembering things.”
Kelly’s mind went blank for a moment. When their eyes met, Sienna looked away, lowering her eyes, too afraid to meet Kelly’s gaze.
Gavin was Caleb’s brother-in-law, and Caleb was Sienna’s boss. No one was going to take Kelly’s side.
Kelly pressed her lips together, her voice trembling as she said, “I’m calling the police.”
Caleb frowned. “Kelly, today is your last day of work. We’ve been working together for almost two years now. If I hadn’t given you this opportunity, how would you have managed your living expenses? Let’s avoid making this a difficult situation.”
“Mr. Hartley, my living expenses didn’t come from your charity. They came from my own hard work. But still, thank you for giving me this job.”
Caleb let out a small sigh of relief when he heard her response.
