Chapter 395: By the Light of the Fire

Ella

That night, gathered around the fire, Henry leaned forward, elbows on his knees, smiling at us.

โ€œSo, tell me if Iโ€™ve got this right,โ€ he said, clearly amused. โ€œMy two sons are mated to two sisters, each with the Goddessโ€™s blood. This meansโ€ฆโ€ He paused, gathering his thoughts. โ€œโ€ฆthat all my grandchildren will have mystical powers?โ€

Cora shrugged, grinning. โ€œThatโ€™s what she told us,โ€ she said, laughing softly.

โ€œWell,โ€ Henry said, pleased, leaning back and shaking his head in disbelief. โ€œThis saves me a great deal of worry.โ€

Sinclair, confused, turned to him. โ€œWhat? Why?โ€

โ€œBecause,โ€ Henry said, shrugging, trying to suppress a grin. โ€œImagine if only one son were mated to a Goddess-born wolfโ€”only half my grandchildren would have magical powers. At least this way, I donโ€™t have to pretend I like the non-magical ones as much as the others.โ€

We all laughed, but I shook my head at Henryโ€™s dark humor. Beneath it, we knew it wasnโ€™t true. He would always love all his grandchildren equally.

โ€œI wonder what your gift will be, little baby,โ€ I said to Rafe, who sat upright in my lap, gripping my fingers and looking around at us. I was intrigued when Cora told me their gifts would vary according to their personalitiesโ€”I, like her, had assumed they would be the same. We still hadnโ€™t figured out Coraโ€™s gift, though weโ€™d all been thinking about it.

โ€œRafeโ€™s will probably be shooting lasers from his eyes,โ€ Roger murmured, leaning forward to study my son. I glared at him, and he grinned.

โ€œNo, heโ€™ll be a healer, like Mommy,โ€ I said, kissing Rafeโ€™s head. He looked up at me with a baby smile. I smiled back.

โ€œNah, Rafeโ€™s got a warriorโ€™s soul,โ€ Sinclair said, leaning back and regarding his son proudly. โ€œItโ€™ll be something to do with that.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ I said, glaring at my mate. โ€œRafe is gentle. His powers will be for peace.โ€

โ€œWhat about ours?โ€ Roger asked, turning to Cora. โ€œAre you getting any hints through the bond?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ she replied, sighing. โ€œI canโ€™t even figure out what mine is, let alone the babyโ€™s.โ€ She frowned, though we knew nothing would diminish her joy today. Everythingโ€”for all of usโ€”was wonderful.

โ€œThatโ€™s all right, Cora,โ€ I said, sighing contentedly and leaning back. โ€œWeโ€™ll figure it out.โ€

โ€œIt would be convenient,โ€ she said, propping her chin on her hand and scowling slightly, โ€œif my gift were healing, considering Iโ€™m a doctor.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I said with mock haughtiness, grinning at her, โ€œthat would be convenient, but not everyone can be as gentle, loving, and restorative as me, Coraโ€”itโ€™s in my personality.โ€

Even as she gave me a playful glare and I laughed, Sinclair nodded in agreement. Cora cocked her head, considering something.

Then, she sat up straight. โ€œActually,โ€ she said to the men, โ€œwould you mind if Ella and I had a minute alone?โ€

Henry and Sinclair immediately agreed and stood, but Roger frowned slightly. โ€œWhy?โ€ he asked.

โ€œSomething Mom said,โ€ Cora said, turning to him, โ€œabout Ellaโ€ฆbeing able to help. A little sister time, to see if we can sort it out?โ€

Rogerโ€™s mouth twisted, and I laughed seeing his reluctanceโ€”he didnโ€™t want to be separated from her, especially now. But when she gently nudged him, he sighed and stood.

โ€œCome on, new papa,โ€ Sinclair said, putting an arm around Rogerโ€™s shoulders after taking Rafe from my arms. โ€œIโ€™ll teach you how to change a diaper.โ€

Roger groaned, but Cora and I laughed as the men helped Henry onto the lift and went inside the RV.

โ€œSo, what are you thinking?โ€ I asked eagerly, moving my chair closer to my sisterโ€™s.

โ€œSomething Mom said,โ€ Cora sighed, looking down at her hands. โ€œShe said you could help me figure it out.โ€

Cora looked up, her mouth twisted. โ€œDo you think Iโ€™m broken, or something?โ€

I opened my mouth to deny it, but she raised a hand to stop me.

โ€œNo, I mean, do I need to be healed? With your powers? To access the gift?โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ I said, intrigued, sitting up straight. โ€œThat makes senseโ€”I had to go to the desert to get the gift from Mom, or at least access it. Maybe we need to do something to activate it, some kind of ceremony.โ€

โ€œWorth a try,โ€ she said, shrugging. โ€œWant to give it a shot?โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ I said, taking her hands. I ran my power through and over her body. Her wolf nudged the gift as it passed, and I smiled sensing herโ€”such a pretty wolf, her fur a thousand shades of brown. But as I scanned Cora, I found nothing.

โ€œSorry, Cora,โ€ I sighed, dropping her hands and sinking back. โ€œYouโ€™re totally fine, as far as my gift can sense.โ€

โ€œBoo,โ€ she said, sinking back and gnawing her lip. She moved on to another idea. โ€œUm, do you think I could try healing you?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked, confused.

โ€œMom said all the gifts were linked. Maybe I canโ€ฆheal a little? And that will let me access my full ability?โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ I said, holding out my hand. โ€œI cut my finger this morning on a bottle cap,โ€ I sighed, โ€œand Iโ€™ve been meaning to heal it all day. My gift could fix this in a second; can you do it?โ€

Cora took my hand, closed her eyes, and entered the meditative state I use. I stayed still, avoiding the same state myself.

After a few minutes, I felt a slight tingling at my fingertip. I saw Cora concentrate, but five minutes later, she opened her eyes, scowled, and pushed my hand away.

โ€œStill there,โ€ she said, scowling.

โ€œI know,โ€ I sighed, looking at my hand. โ€œI felt a tingling though, and it does feel better.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ she asked, interested. โ€œYeah,โ€ I said, smiling. โ€œItโ€™s interesting theyโ€™re linked. Maybe we can all do a bit of each otherโ€™s stuff, but healing isnโ€™t your gift.โ€

โ€œThen what is it?โ€ she sighed, scowling, becoming frustrated. I tucked my feet under me and smiled at my sister, who was always more hot-headed than me.

โ€œDo you think it makes sense that Iโ€™m a healer?โ€ I asked quietly. โ€œMom said our gifts match our personalities.โ€

โ€œWell, duh, Ella,โ€ Cora said, rolling her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re the most maternal person Iโ€™ve ever metโ€”you want to take care of everyone, especially babies, and fix things.โ€

โ€œTrue,โ€ I said, cocking my head. โ€œIโ€™d heal the whole world if I could.โ€

โ€œBut that doesnโ€™t help me,โ€ Cora said, losing her temper slightly. I looked at the sky; distant thunder rumbled. I wondered if weโ€™d move inside.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your key personality trait?โ€ I asked. Cora glared at me.

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ she huffed. โ€œBeing frustrated? Stubborn? Closed off? I didnโ€™t let Roger get close for monthsโ€”and heโ€™s my mate.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true, Cora,โ€ I said, leaning forward. โ€œYouโ€™re stubborn, but you close yourself off because you feel things so intensely.โ€

โ€œWell, what good is that?โ€ she snapped, though I knew she regretted it instantly.

I glanced upwards as the breeze picked up, bringing storm clouds faster than I thought possible. My lips parted slightlyโ€ฆ

โ€œCoraโ€ฆโ€ I whispered.

โ€œSeriously, Ella!โ€ she said, throwing up a hand and sighing as she glared into the fire. โ€œWhat kind of stupid gift matches someone like me? Can I turn things to rock? Halt trains with sheer will? Freeze people by glaring at them?โ€ She scowled, crossing her arms. โ€œThatโ€™s what my dating history suggests, at least,โ€ she grumbled.

Precisely with that grumble, thunder rumbled. Cora didnโ€™t notice.

โ€œCora,โ€ I said again, a grin spreading across my face.

โ€œSeriously, Ella,โ€ she said, snapping her gaze to me. โ€œWhat kind of gift matches someone so headstrong, so constantly agitated, soโ€ฆโ€ I put out a hand, interrupting her. โ€œSo tempestuous?โ€ I said, smiling widely. Cora stilled at my expression. โ€œWhat?โ€ she said, frowning. โ€œWhat is it? What did you figure out?โ€

I said nothing, laughing and holding up my hands as rain began to fall. Coraโ€™s jaw dropped.
