Chapter 395: By the Light of the Fire
Ella
That night, gathered around the fire, Henry leaned forward, elbows on his knees, smiling at us.
โSo, tell me if Iโve got this right,โ he said, clearly amused. โMy two sons are mated to two sisters, each with the Goddessโs blood. This meansโฆโ He paused, gathering his thoughts. โโฆthat all my grandchildren will have mystical powers?โ
Cora shrugged, grinning. โThatโs what she told us,โ she said, laughing softly.
โWell,โ Henry said, pleased, leaning back and shaking his head in disbelief. โThis saves me a great deal of worry.โ
Sinclair, confused, turned to him. โWhat? Why?โ
โBecause,โ Henry said, shrugging, trying to suppress a grin. โImagine if only one son were mated to a Goddess-born wolfโonly half my grandchildren would have magical powers. At least this way, I donโt have to pretend I like the non-magical ones as much as the others.โ
We all laughed, but I shook my head at Henryโs dark humor. Beneath it, we knew it wasnโt true. He would always love all his grandchildren equally.
โI wonder what your gift will be, little baby,โ I said to Rafe, who sat upright in my lap, gripping my fingers and looking around at us. I was intrigued when Cora told me their gifts would vary according to their personalitiesโI, like her, had assumed they would be the same. We still hadnโt figured out Coraโs gift, though weโd all been thinking about it.
โRafeโs will probably be shooting lasers from his eyes,โ Roger murmured, leaning forward to study my son. I glared at him, and he grinned.
โNo, heโll be a healer, like Mommy,โ I said, kissing Rafeโs head. He looked up at me with a baby smile. I smiled back.
โNah, Rafeโs got a warriorโs soul,โ Sinclair said, leaning back and regarding his son proudly. โItโll be something to do with that.โ
โNo!โ I said, glaring at my mate. โRafe is gentle. His powers will be for peace.โ
โWhat about ours?โ Roger asked, turning to Cora. โAre you getting any hints through the bond?โ
โNo,โ she replied, sighing. โI canโt even figure out what mine is, let alone the babyโs.โ She frowned, though we knew nothing would diminish her joy today. Everythingโfor all of usโwas wonderful.
โThatโs all right, Cora,โ I said, sighing contentedly and leaning back. โWeโll figure it out.โ
โIt would be convenient,โ she said, propping her chin on her hand and scowling slightly, โif my gift were healing, considering Iโm a doctor.โ
โYes,โ I said with mock haughtiness, grinning at her, โthat would be convenient, but not everyone can be as gentle, loving, and restorative as me, Coraโitโs in my personality.โ
Even as she gave me a playful glare and I laughed, Sinclair nodded in agreement. Cora cocked her head, considering something.
Then, she sat up straight. โActually,โ she said to the men, โwould you mind if Ella and I had a minute alone?โ
Henry and Sinclair immediately agreed and stood, but Roger frowned slightly. โWhy?โ he asked.
โSomething Mom said,โ Cora said, turning to him, โabout Ellaโฆbeing able to help. A little sister time, to see if we can sort it out?โ
Rogerโs mouth twisted, and I laughed seeing his reluctanceโhe didnโt want to be separated from her, especially now. But when she gently nudged him, he sighed and stood.
โCome on, new papa,โ Sinclair said, putting an arm around Rogerโs shoulders after taking Rafe from my arms. โIโll teach you how to change a diaper.โ
Roger groaned, but Cora and I laughed as the men helped Henry onto the lift and went inside the RV.
โSo, what are you thinking?โ I asked eagerly, moving my chair closer to my sisterโs.
โSomething Mom said,โ Cora sighed, looking down at her hands. โShe said you could help me figure it out.โ
Cora looked up, her mouth twisted. โDo you think Iโm broken, or something?โ
I opened my mouth to deny it, but she raised a hand to stop me.
โNo, I mean, do I need to be healed? With your powers? To access the gift?โ
โOh,โ I said, intrigued, sitting up straight. โThat makes senseโI had to go to the desert to get the gift from Mom, or at least access it. Maybe we need to do something to activate it, some kind of ceremony.โ
โWorth a try,โ she said, shrugging. โWant to give it a shot?โ
โSure,โ I said, taking her hands. I ran my power through and over her body. Her wolf nudged the gift as it passed, and I smiled sensing herโsuch a pretty wolf, her fur a thousand shades of brown. But as I scanned Cora, I found nothing.
โSorry, Cora,โ I sighed, dropping her hands and sinking back. โYouโre totally fine, as far as my gift can sense.โ
โBoo,โ she said, sinking back and gnawing her lip. She moved on to another idea. โUm, do you think I could try healing you?โ
โWhat?โ I asked, confused.
โMom said all the gifts were linked. Maybe I canโฆheal a little? And that will let me access my full ability?โ
โOkay,โ I said, holding out my hand. โI cut my finger this morning on a bottle cap,โ I sighed, โand Iโve been meaning to heal it all day. My gift could fix this in a second; can you do it?โ
Cora took my hand, closed her eyes, and entered the meditative state I use. I stayed still, avoiding the same state myself.
After a few minutes, I felt a slight tingling at my fingertip. I saw Cora concentrate, but five minutes later, she opened her eyes, scowled, and pushed my hand away.
โStill there,โ she said, scowling.
โI know,โ I sighed, looking at my hand. โI felt a tingling though, and it does feel better.โ
โReally?โ she asked, interested. โYeah,โ I said, smiling. โItโs interesting theyโre linked. Maybe we can all do a bit of each otherโs stuff, but healing isnโt your gift.โ
โThen what is it?โ she sighed, scowling, becoming frustrated. I tucked my feet under me and smiled at my sister, who was always more hot-headed than me.
โDo you think it makes sense that Iโm a healer?โ I asked quietly. โMom said our gifts match our personalities.โ
โWell, duh, Ella,โ Cora said, rolling her eyes. โYouโre the most maternal person Iโve ever metโyou want to take care of everyone, especially babies, and fix things.โ
โTrue,โ I said, cocking my head. โIโd heal the whole world if I could.โ
โBut that doesnโt help me,โ Cora said, losing her temper slightly. I looked at the sky; distant thunder rumbled. I wondered if weโd move inside.
โWhatโs your key personality trait?โ I asked. Cora glared at me.
โI donโt know,โ she huffed. โBeing frustrated? Stubborn? Closed off? I didnโt let Roger get close for monthsโand heโs my mate.โ
โThatโs not true, Cora,โ I said, leaning forward. โYouโre stubborn, but you close yourself off because you feel things so intensely.โ
โWell, what good is that?โ she snapped, though I knew she regretted it instantly.
I glanced upwards as the breeze picked up, bringing storm clouds faster than I thought possible. My lips parted slightlyโฆ
โCoraโฆโ I whispered.
โSeriously, Ella!โ she said, throwing up a hand and sighing as she glared into the fire. โWhat kind of stupid gift matches someone like me? Can I turn things to rock? Halt trains with sheer will? Freeze people by glaring at them?โ She scowled, crossing her arms. โThatโs what my dating history suggests, at least,โ she grumbled.
Precisely with that grumble, thunder rumbled. Cora didnโt notice.
โCora,โ I said again, a grin spreading across my face.
โSeriously, Ella,โ she said, snapping her gaze to me. โWhat kind of gift matches someone so headstrong, so constantly agitated, soโฆโ I put out a hand, interrupting her. โSo tempestuous?โ I said, smiling widely. Cora stilled at my expression. โWhat?โ she said, frowning. โWhat is it? What did you figure out?โ
I said nothing, laughing and holding up my hands as rain began to fall. Coraโs jaw dropped.
