โThatโs wonderful. Letโs head to class,โ the teacher said with a smile, seeing how happy Mike was. One of the teachers took Mikeโs hand and led him toward the classroom.
In the quiet, enclosed backseat, only Teresa and Jonathan remained. Teresa glanced over at Jonathan, her eyes lingering for a moment.
Sheโd wanted to ask him something that morning, but with Lucas showing up, she never got the chance. Last night, the two of them opened up and talked about so much with each other. It all felt so surreal and like a dream for her.
Heโd also confessed that the reason heโd missed her calls several times was because Irene had hung up on her when he wasnโt looking, and even deleted the call logs. He had no idea it was happening.
Theyโd talked through a lot, but when it came to certain topics, both of them would suddenly fall silent, as if by unspoken agreement.
Jonathan had always thought Teresa had never tried to reach out to him. And Teresa had always assumed he was about to remarry, start a new life, and build a new family.
Neither of them expected that they were both still standing in the same place where they departed.
Teresa finally worked up the nerve to ask, her voice barely above a whisper, โWhyโฆ why did you kiss me yesterday?โ
Jonathan had been reading through some files, but at her question, he closed them and looked straight at her. โWhy do you think?โ
Teresa hesitated, her heart pounding. โWere you drunk?โ
โI wasnโt drunk.โ
Teresa licked her lips. โIf you werenโt drunk, then I have no idea why.โ
Jonathan lowered his eyes to his files and let out a hum. โYou have no idea? Well, take your time.โ
Teresa didnโt know what to say. โIf it wasnโt alcohol, does it mean he still has feelings for me? Or maybe heโd just been holding it in for too long while he was abroad?โ She didnโt know.
She wasnโt sure. She had no clue what he was thinking. โIf he wouldnโt say it, how am I supposed to know?โ
โWhat about you? Why are you working so hard?โ Jonathan suddenly asked, closing his files again and turning to her.
โWhat?โ Teresa was baffled.
โIโm already paying child support, and I told you if you ever need more, just ask me. I gave you the keys to the villas in Jarisburg and Strico. You could be living an easy life with the kids, so why not just enjoy it? Why throw yourself into work and stress yourself out with your company?โ Jonathan pressed.
Teresa bit her lip, feeling a pang in her chest. She turned away, her voice low. โWell, you should take your time, too.โ
Jonathan stared at her, speechless. They both fell silent, and neither asked any more questions. Time slipped by in that heavy silence as they drove. Neither of them spoke the words that they wanted to say.
When they pulled up in front of Teresaโs office building, Jonathan broke the silence. โTry to keep your lunch break open. I want to take you somewhere,โ he said before she got out of the car.
Teresa was confused. โWhere are we going?โ
โYouโll find out soon enough. You wonโt be disappointed,โ Jonathan replied. With that, he drove off.
Teresa spent the whole morning in her office, still unable to figure out where Jonathan was planning to take her. She was happy about his return. But when it came to their relationship, she felt completely lost.
โShould I break the status quo? If I did, what would our relationship be?โ
โIt feels as if we are two people drifting on a boat in the middle of the oceanโwhen the fog finally cleared, there might be an even greater abyss waiting ahead,โ she thought.
When noon finally rolled around, Teresa got a call from Jonathan. He was already there, so she headed downstairs right on time. โWhere are you taking me, exactly?โ
โJust get in the car. Itโs cold out here,โ Jonathan said, still not giving away where they were headed.
They kept driving. Teresa never expected Jonathan to bring her to a club.
