Chapter 162
Seeing Michael pushing her away, Jennifer crouched down and tried to appease him. “Mike, did my words yesterday frighten you? I’m sorry. Please don’t be angry. You and your mom are the only family I have.”
Teresa rubbed Michael’s hair. “Hannah has apologized to you. We’re staying in Mareigh, and you’ll definitely see Mr. Lime again, okay?”
Michael, still clinging to Teresa, spoke. “Aunt Hannah, Mom said… you won’t think of leaving.”
Teresa was stunned. Hey, I never said that! she thought. Michael chuckled and looked up at Teresa, blinking. “Mom, you said that, right?” Teresa ruffled his hair and sighed. “You little rascal.”
Jennifer chuckled and didn’t take it to heart. After lunch with Teresa and Michael, Jennifer returned to the hospital. Teresa felt a bit sad and mused, Hannah bought some snacks to please Michael, likely worried he might hold a grudge against her. She’s a little extreme. Maybe because of her childhood experiences, she longs for the warmth and love of a family.
“Mommy, Aunt Hannah tapped your head when she left. She never did that before,” Michael commented while eating bread. “That’s because we’re family now. People reveal their true selves with those they’re closest to. I often tap your head, too.” Having said that, Teresa acted on it.
Michael covered his head and rolled his eyes at Teresa.
Since Teresa was free that afternoon, she spent time reading and playing games with Michael. Michael, who liked to count when bored, could now count from one to two hundred.
Cheryl had praised Michael in the group chat a few days ago, saying he inherited Jonathan’s intelligence and that becoming the top student in the city would be no problem for him.
Speaking of the group chat, Teresa had created one named “Muffin’s Friends.” In the group, she had labeled herself as the group leader, Miriam as the deputy group leader, and Cheryl as a level-one member.
Teresa also added Jennifer to the group chat and explained to Miriam and Cheryl that Jennifer was her biological sister. Jennifer had gone missing when Teresa was three, and they were finally reunited.
Cheryl was the most surprised and sent several “mind-blown” emojis with the message: [Gosh, I can’t believe Dr. Nelson is actually Teresa’s sister! Donald is in love with Dr. Nelson. If we become a family, our relationship will be very complicated.]
Cheryl: [Teresa, so both you and your sister will be joining our family?]
Jennifer replied with a smirk emoji and the message: [Rest assured. That definitely won’t happen.]
Cheryl went on: [If that’s the case, our families’ bonds will be stronger!]
Jennifer added: [Teresa has divorced Jonathan and won’t remarry him. As for Donald and I, we’ll never get into a relationship. Thus, neither of us will be joining your family.]
Cheryl felt slightly annoyed as she was only making a joke and didn’t expect Jennifer to be so serious.
Teresa changed the topic. [I’m so happy to be reuniting with Jennifer! To celebrate, I’m sending everyone a shopping card.]
With that, she emailed three shopping cards, each worth $100, for a total of $300.
Seeing that, Jennifer privately messaged Teresa and criticized her for wasting money like that.
Teresa helplessly replied: [Hannah, they’re just small gifts and only cost a few hundred dollars.]
Jennifer was furious. [What a spendthrift you are! I’ve noticed your spending habits long ago. I wasn’t in a position to comment on anything before we were reunited, but now, as your sister, I have to keep you in check. You were spoiled by Philip and Evelyn and never needed to worry about anything before this. However, you’re an adult with a child now. Shouldn’t you think about saving for your child’s future?]
Teresa bristled. Her strong personality meant she didn’t like being lectured, but Jennifer was her sister, so she didn’t retort.
Jennifer asked: [Why aren’t you talking?]
Teresa returned to her senses. Successfully unlocked! Wrong. Everything I do is wrong… Are you satisfied?
Jennifer texted. [You’re going to wear me out. I’m just worried about your reckless spending. Well, I’m returning that card to your account. Spend your money wisely in the future.]
Jennifer didn’t say anything more, and neither did Teresa.
Just as Teresa was about to get off work, Edward suddenly called her, saying, “Teresa, Irene is picking Jonathan’s car up. I don’t know how she found out you were driving his car.”
Teresa assumed Irene probably had seen it somewhere. After all, she had driven that car to quite a few places. Teresa handed Edward the key to the Maybach, and Edward carefully took it. He’d long wanted to take Jonathan’s custom, fully upgraded Maybach S680 for a spin.
“I’ll leave first, Teresa,” said Edward.
