Chapter 175

The sky was bright when Teresa opened her eyes. She moved her sore body and found herself leaning against a warm chest. Turning, she saw streaks of sunlight illuminating Jonathan’s handsome face. The bright sun made him squint, so he pulled up the blanket to cover his face.

Teresa gasped, rubbing her aching forehead. She vaguely remembered the previous night’s company product launch event and the copious amount of alcohol she’d consumed. She had drunk because Jonathan was there; she instinctively trusted he wouldn’t abandon her, even if she got drunk. However, she wondered how she’d ended up in bed with him. Fragments of memory flooded her mind. Suddenly recalling something, she looked down at the clothes scattered across the floor and noticed an unopened condom on the bedside table.

A jolt ran through her as she remembered saying, “Jonathan… we… have a… baby.” In the intimate atmosphere, she’d blurted out the secret. Afterward, she sensed him pause and place the condom on the table. “He didn’t use protection last night!” she realized.

Teresa began dressing immediately. Her hurried movements woke Jonathan, and he saw her pale face, etched with panic. He instinctively reached for her hand, calling out in a daze, “Honey.” His voice, still thick with sleep, stung her. She shook off his hand and turned to him with resentment. “I’m not your wife anymore,” she said. “Why didn’t you use protection last night?”

Jonathan’s brows furrowed as he came to his senses. Sitting up, he replied, “I forgot.”

“Forgot? Why didn’t you forget last time? You knew I’d been drinking!” Teresa shouted.

Jonathan, also getting dressed, explained, “I drank too, but I was a bit more sober. I remember you saying, ‘Let’s have a baby,’ so I went along with it.”

Teresa pressed her lips together. She knew exactly what she’d said—whether it was “Let’s have a baby” or “We have a baby”—but she pretended to be clueless. “I never said that,” she said.

“I remember you did. I’m pretty sure,” Jonathan said.

“I didn’t. You must have misheard,” Teresa responded.

Jonathan pressed his lips together, staring at the frustrated Teresa. Both were fully dressed now. What happened last night had already happened. This situation was far more serious than when Teresa had been drugged. After all, Jonathan had been sober the last time they slept together and had taken precautions to prevent pregnancy. However, they were both drunk the previous night, and Jonathan distinctly remembered Teresa tearfully saying, “Jonathan, let’s have a baby.”

Jonathan, already 30, was still deeply affected by their past. The woman lying beneath him the previous night was the one he could never forget. In that moment, he put aside the condom he’d retrieved and pulled Teresa into his arms.

“Since it’s already happened, I can’t just ignore it. I also remember saying I wanted to marry you again last night,” Jonathan said.

“I won’t remarry you,” Teresa replied, tying her coat. Casually putting up her hair, she looked at him. “I can’t act like last night didn’t happen. It hasn’t even been 24 hours yet. I’ll go get contraceptive pills from the pharmacy,” she continued.

Jonathan grabbed her arm. “Why not take a chance? If you get pregnant, I’ll take responsibility for you and the baby.”

Expressionless, Teresa shook off his hand. “I won’t take that chance.”
