Chapter 184

That was proof that Evelyn still loved her. "There's not a decent guy out there. You deserved getting fooled," someone said. Evelyn hung her head silently, a hint of disappointment flashing in her eyes.

Someone then told Evelyn, “Just rest in the hospital. The doctor said you need to be monitored. I’ll go pick up Isabel and take care of her for a few days. After you’re discharged and feeling better, both of you can stay at my place.”

Another retorted sharply, “How can Rosary Estates accommodate so many people?”

Teresa said, “With three bedrooms, we can manage.” “We can’t just do nothing. You wouldn’t want Mom to end up on the streets,” she added.

Jennifer didn't want to support Evelyn financially, but she was in a different situation from Teresa. Evelyn had never been stingy with Teresa after making money. Even though she’d ignored Teresa after remarrying, the latter couldn't just abandon her now that she was down on her luck. It just wasn’t reasonable.

“Whatever,” Jennifer said, then left, frustrated.

Teresa asked Evelyn, “Where’s that jerk now? We can’t just let him get away with this. Let’s take legal action! What a son of a…”

“I don’t know. Where would I even start looking? He blocked my number long ago and ran away with his mistress, taking all my money and property. It was then that I realized he was after my money the moment he married me. He only pretended to be deeply in love to deceive me. He never cared for Isabel either,” Evelyn sighed.

“If only you had seen it coming sooner. You wouldn’t have had another child. Now, look at you, left with nothing and needing to take care of a kid,” Teresa said.

Evelyn’s situation was quite similar to Teresa’s back then. Teresa only realized how tiring it was to take care of a young child after she became a mother.

Wanting to know what Hannah had endured, Evelyn looked up and asked, “What did Hannah go through over the years? Why is ‘Jennifer Nelson’ written on her name tag?”

Teresa sat down and told Evelyn about how her sister had been rescued by a female teacher named Genevieve Nelson, who then adopted her. Genevieve, a small-town teacher, built a school specifically to take in abandoned girls, and Jennifer was raised by her since childhood. Jennifer was hardworking, working part-time while attending university, and with persistence, she achieved what she had set out to do.

“So, that’s what happened. No wonder we couldn’t find your sister all these years. We really owe a big thanks to that teacher; she’s truly a good person,” Evelyn commented.

“Yes. That teacher was selfless. Even when Jennifer sent money back, she wouldn’t accept it. If Jennifer hadn’t met her, she might have died from cold or hunger at the bottom of a cliff a long time ago,” Teresa said.

Evelyn thought about the hardships Hannah had faced as a child and pressed a tissue to her eyes. “Your sister went through a lot. If she hadn’t gone missing, I could have helped her financially.”

“I’m doing my best now to support my sister materially. However, she’s proud and doesn’t want me to waste money on things. She’s gotten used to being frugal over the years,” Teresa sighed.

“It’s my fault. I owe your sister an apology,” Evelyn said, feeling guilty as she recalled Jennifer’s advice.

“I’ll spend the rest of my life alone. I want to take you, your sister, and Isabel away from Nareigh. I’ll try my best to make it up to you all,” Evelyn proposed.

Teresa questioned, “If we leave Nareigh, where do we go?”

“Your sister said she has friends in Shaville who can help her with transferring hospitals. Let’s just go with her plan. Wherever she wants to go, we’ll all follow her,” Evelyn explained.

“Where are we going to live? There are so many of us. With the housing prices in Shaville so high, I don’t have enough savings right now. Jennifer only mentioned she could transfer to a different hospital, but she doesn’t have any accommodation there,” Teresa shot back.

Evelyn asked Teresa about her savings. When Teresa held up one finger, Evelyn gasped.

“One million dollars,” Teresa said weakly.

“What? Are you trying to give me a heart attack? You’ve been running a big company for almost a year now. How did we make so little money?” Evelyn questioned.

Knowing that Evelyn would say that, Teresa rebuked, “Roc Group was encountering a loss when I took it over. It’s not even a year yet; how could I make money so quickly? I have to manage expenses and pay the staff. I’ve been trying really hard to save up.”

“You’ve been trying hard to save up? I don’t believe you. You spend money more recklessly than I do, puffing yourself up at your own cost,” Evelyn spat out.

Teresa was displeased. “Whatever you say. Anyway, this is all the cash I have on hand, and you don’t have any money left either. How are we supposed to get to Shaville? Are we relying on my sister’s small salary to support all five of us? Are we supposed to live on air?”

Evelyn furrowed her brows, thinking, “It’s four people, not five. She must be mistaken.”

“Let’s go somewhere else, or perhaps even abroad! Anywhere is fine! Talk it over with your sister and see what she thinks. You could transfer or sell Roc Group,” Evelyn continued.
