Chapter 243
Donald drew in a sharp breath. He asked, “What did you just say? You’re not leaving Nareigh?”
Jennifer said, “After you woke up, I called my friend and told her I’m not going to Shaville anymore. I’ve decided to stay in Nareigh instead. Maybe the wrecked car is a sign that I’m meant to stay here.”
Donald took Jennifer’s hand and said, “Then go to work at Nareigh General Hospital. I’ll go with you. I’ll stay by your side and protect you, always.”
Jennifer felt a warm sweetness rise in her chest, but she sighed in mock frustration. She said, “Fine, do whatever you want. I just can’t stop worrying about you, a certain fool.”
Donald chuckled, his eyes soft with affection. He said, “A fool? That’s me. I know you can’t stop worrying about me. You like me too, don’t you?”
Jennifer stayed silent. Ignoring the pain from his injuries, Donald struggled to move his injured arm and leaned closer to Jennifer. He was determined to hear her say that she liked him. He had been waiting for this moment for a long time.
Jennifer took a deep breath, her heart racing as she tried to steady herself. She opened her mouth, “I…”
Donald was mid-sentence when the door suddenly swung open. Cathy stepped in. Seeing the scene, she waved her hands and said, “Sorry! Didn’t mean to interrupt. I’ll step out.”
But Jennifer was the one who decided to leave. She glanced at Donald and said calmly, “You should talk to your mom.” Then, with a polite nod to Cathy, she walked out.
Cathy’s gaze followed Jennifer until she disappeared. Then she turned back to Donald and said, “She’s quite beautiful. Be honest with me, she’s not just a colleague, is she? She’s the one you’ve been pining for, isn’t she?” Cathy had overheard a passing remark from Cheryl about how Donald had someone he liked but hadn’t managed to win over.
Donald didn’t deny it. He said with a grin, “Yeah, it’s her. She’s the one I’ve always been crazy about.”
Seeing Donald’s radiant smile, Cathy couldn’t help but smile too. She said, “That’s great! As long as you young people like each other, that’s all that matters. By the way, she looks very much like Teresa.”
Donald, without a second thought, replied, “They’re sisters.”
Cathy froze, her face a mix of shock and disbelief.
Donald quickly explained, “Mom, I’m serious about Jennifer, and she feels the same way about me. We’re in love. You’re not going to object just because she’s Teresa’s sister, are you?”
Cathy snapped out of her daze and asked, “Hold on a second. Jonathan told me her name is Jennifer Nelson, but you’re saying she’s Teresa’s sister. How do they have different last names?”
Donald replied earnestly, “Jennifer’s family situation is a bit complicated. I don’t care about her background, and I’ll explain it to you in detail later. But right now, I need you to promise me one thing. You won’t stop me from being with Jennifer, right? I love her.” He stared intently at Cathy.
Cathy burst out laughing. She said, “What do you take me for, Irene? As long as you two are happy, I’ve got no reason to say no.”
Donald let out a sigh of relief. He looked up and said, “Irene is behind you.”
Cathy turned to look, but the doorway was empty. When she caught sight of Donald’s mischievous grin, she lightly smacked his leg under the blanket. She said, “You brat, you scared me!”
Donald’s expression softened, his brows relaxing. He said, “Mom, thank you. I was worried you wouldn’t be okay with my marriage to Jennifer.”
Hearing the word ‘marriage,’ Cathy was startled and quickly asked how far things had progressed.
Donald’s face lit up with happiness as he teased, “You might beat Irene to becoming a grandma. Better get ready.”
