Chapter 363

The next day, after Jonathan sobered up, he called Irene and apologized. โ€œMom, I was drunk yesterday and not really myself. Sorry if I said anything out of line.โ€ After all, she was still his mother.

Irene laughed it off. โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it. A mom doesnโ€™t stay mad at her own kid. I just donโ€™t want Teresa coming between us, and thatโ€™s allโ€”I just hope you can stop thinking aboutโ€”โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough,โ€ Jonathan cut her off, sounding as if he truly didnโ€™t want to hear that name. โ€œLetโ€™s not talk about Teresa.โ€

Irene snorted. โ€œYou donโ€™t want me to say it? Well, Iโ€™m going to anyway. Stop obsessing over Teresa. Itโ€™s time to move on.โ€

โ€œI just canโ€™t help it,โ€ he said, unsure how to describe his feelings. โ€œIโ€™m the one who keeps chasing after her. Iโ€™m the one who canโ€™t let go. Everything thatโ€™s happening nowโ€”I brought it on myself.โ€

Irene felt a wave of frustration. She couldnโ€™t understand why Jonathan always took Teresaโ€™s side. โ€œWhat on earth did Teresa do to him?โ€ she wondered.

โ€œShe said sheโ€™s done with you. If she really means it, she shouldnโ€™t ever see you again, not even for her sisterโ€™s engagement,โ€ Irene said.

โ€œThatโ€™s her own sister, and itโ€™s a huge deal. How could she not show up?โ€ Jonathan replied.

โ€œAnyway, she said she wonโ€™t come to any Lynn family events. If sheโ€™s got the guts, she should stick to her word and cut ties with the Lynn family and you for good,โ€ Irene blurted, becoming increasingly agitated.

Jonathan fell silent for a few seconds, then abruptly changed the subject. โ€œHow about I set you up with someone? What kind of guy do you like? Someone like Dad?โ€

Irene exclaimed, โ€œWhat? Why are you dragging me into this? Iโ€™m talking about your life! Iโ€™m already this old; what do I need a partner for?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not old at all. You take good care of yourself. I bet I could find you a great match,โ€ Jonathan teased.

Irene was speechless. โ€œYouโ€™re really trying to drive me crazy! Iโ€™m talking about you. Iโ€™ve already picked out a bunch of rich, pretty, and well-educated girls for you.โ€

Jonathan laughed. โ€œHow about thisโ€”letโ€™s both go on blind dates. Weโ€™ll remarry together. Howโ€™s that?โ€

Irene stared at her phone in disbelief. โ€œJonathan, are you sure youโ€™re sober?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m totally sober. If I remarry, Iโ€™d worry about leaving you alone. Maybe we should just get married together,โ€ Jonathan joked.

โ€œI think youโ€™re definitely still drunk! Youโ€™re going to drive me crazy,โ€ Irene huffed, at a loss for words. โ€œGo get something for your hangover,โ€ she snapped and hung up.

Jonathan had barely hung up when his phone rang again. He glanced at the caller ID, raised an eyebrow in surprise, and answered, โ€œHello, Miriam?โ€

A childโ€™s sobs came through the line. โ€œMr. Lime, itโ€™s me, Mike,โ€ the voice whimpered.

Jonathan immediately recognized the little boy. He let out a gentle โ€œmmโ€ and asked softly, โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, Mike?โ€

โ€œWhy did you ignore me yesterday when I called you?โ€ Michael asked.

Jonathan was confused. โ€œWhat? When did you call me? Where were you?โ€

Michael sniffled hard. โ€œAt the door! I ran after you and called your name, but you just turned around and left.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you like me anymore? I said Iโ€™d be your sidekick when I grow up, but now you donโ€™t want me as your sidekick?โ€

Jonathan paused. โ€œMike, I really didnโ€™t hear you yesterday. Iโ€™d had a few drinks, and it was pretty windy, so I must have missed it. How about I apologize to you in person? Why donโ€™t you ask Miriam to bring you to my office?โ€

At that point, Miriam grabbed the phone. โ€œNo need for a big apology. My cousinโ€™s kid just misunderstood and thought you were ignoring him. He got upset and insisted on calling you himself,โ€ Miriam explained.

โ€œI see. Can you give the phone back to Mike?โ€ Jonathan said.

He added, โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Mike. I wasnโ€™t ignoring you. Next time you call me, Iโ€™ll answer right away.โ€

That finally made the little boy smile. โ€œYou promised, Mr. Lime! Next time, you canโ€™t ignore me.โ€

Jonathan agreed, โ€œAlright.โ€

After comforting him, Miriam hung up and then took Michaelโ€™s hand to find Teresa outside the room.

Miriam let out a sigh. โ€œSeriously, you and Jonathan really arenโ€™t talking anymore? I even have to make the call for you.โ€

โ€œWe really arenโ€™t,โ€ Teresa replied. โ€œThanks for helping.โ€

Michael wouldnโ€™t stop crying, thinking Jonathan was ignoring him and insisting on making a call. Teresa was out of options, so she called Miriam over to help.

After Miriam left, Teresa washed Michaelโ€™s face.

Michael grinned. โ€œMom, I misunderstood Mr. Lime. He said he was drinking last night and didnโ€™t see me.โ€

Teresa paused while wiping his face. โ€˜He was drinking again? Well, it was the Lynn family dinner yesterday. Of course, he had to have a few drinks with the elders,โ€™ she thought. But she didnโ€™t even know when he got back to Nareigh.

Teresa snapped out of it and smiled at Michael. โ€œHey, no more overthinking, okay? My son is the coolest. Who wouldnโ€™t like you?โ€

โ€œBut Mom, Grandma doesnโ€™t like me,โ€ Michael mumbled.
