Chapter 363
The next day, after Jonathan sobered up, he called Irene and apologized. โMom, I was drunk yesterday and not really myself. Sorry if I said anything out of line.โ After all, she was still his mother.
Irene laughed it off. โDonโt worry about it. A mom doesnโt stay mad at her own kid. I just donโt want Teresa coming between us, and thatโs allโI just hope you can stop thinking aboutโโ
โThatโs enough,โ Jonathan cut her off, sounding as if he truly didnโt want to hear that name. โLetโs not talk about Teresa.โ
Irene snorted. โYou donโt want me to say it? Well, Iโm going to anyway. Stop obsessing over Teresa. Itโs time to move on.โ
โI just canโt help it,โ he said, unsure how to describe his feelings. โIโm the one who keeps chasing after her. Iโm the one who canโt let go. Everything thatโs happening nowโI brought it on myself.โ
Irene felt a wave of frustration. She couldnโt understand why Jonathan always took Teresaโs side. โWhat on earth did Teresa do to him?โ she wondered.
โShe said sheโs done with you. If she really means it, she shouldnโt ever see you again, not even for her sisterโs engagement,โ Irene said.
โThatโs her own sister, and itโs a huge deal. How could she not show up?โ Jonathan replied.
โAnyway, she said she wonโt come to any Lynn family events. If sheโs got the guts, she should stick to her word and cut ties with the Lynn family and you for good,โ Irene blurted, becoming increasingly agitated.
Jonathan fell silent for a few seconds, then abruptly changed the subject. โHow about I set you up with someone? What kind of guy do you like? Someone like Dad?โ
Irene exclaimed, โWhat? Why are you dragging me into this? Iโm talking about your life! Iโm already this old; what do I need a partner for?โ
โYouโre not old at all. You take good care of yourself. I bet I could find you a great match,โ Jonathan teased.
Irene was speechless. โYouโre really trying to drive me crazy! Iโm talking about you. Iโve already picked out a bunch of rich, pretty, and well-educated girls for you.โ
Jonathan laughed. โHow about thisโletโs both go on blind dates. Weโll remarry together. Howโs that?โ
Irene stared at her phone in disbelief. โJonathan, are you sure youโre sober?โ
โIโm totally sober. If I remarry, Iโd worry about leaving you alone. Maybe we should just get married together,โ Jonathan joked.
โI think youโre definitely still drunk! Youโre going to drive me crazy,โ Irene huffed, at a loss for words. โGo get something for your hangover,โ she snapped and hung up.
Jonathan had barely hung up when his phone rang again. He glanced at the caller ID, raised an eyebrow in surprise, and answered, โHello, Miriam?โ
A childโs sobs came through the line. โMr. Lime, itโs me, Mike,โ the voice whimpered.
Jonathan immediately recognized the little boy. He let out a gentle โmmโ and asked softly, โWhatโs wrong, Mike?โ
โWhy did you ignore me yesterday when I called you?โ Michael asked.
Jonathan was confused. โWhat? When did you call me? Where were you?โ
Michael sniffled hard. โAt the door! I ran after you and called your name, but you just turned around and left.โ
โDonโt you like me anymore? I said Iโd be your sidekick when I grow up, but now you donโt want me as your sidekick?โ
Jonathan paused. โMike, I really didnโt hear you yesterday. Iโd had a few drinks, and it was pretty windy, so I must have missed it. How about I apologize to you in person? Why donโt you ask Miriam to bring you to my office?โ
At that point, Miriam grabbed the phone. โNo need for a big apology. My cousinโs kid just misunderstood and thought you were ignoring him. He got upset and insisted on calling you himself,โ Miriam explained.
โI see. Can you give the phone back to Mike?โ Jonathan said.
He added, โIโm sorry, Mike. I wasnโt ignoring you. Next time you call me, Iโll answer right away.โ
That finally made the little boy smile. โYou promised, Mr. Lime! Next time, you canโt ignore me.โ
Jonathan agreed, โAlright.โ
After comforting him, Miriam hung up and then took Michaelโs hand to find Teresa outside the room.
Miriam let out a sigh. โSeriously, you and Jonathan really arenโt talking anymore? I even have to make the call for you.โ
โWe really arenโt,โ Teresa replied. โThanks for helping.โ
Michael wouldnโt stop crying, thinking Jonathan was ignoring him and insisting on making a call. Teresa was out of options, so she called Miriam over to help.
After Miriam left, Teresa washed Michaelโs face.
Michael grinned. โMom, I misunderstood Mr. Lime. He said he was drinking last night and didnโt see me.โ
Teresa paused while wiping his face. โHe was drinking again? Well, it was the Lynn family dinner yesterday. Of course, he had to have a few drinks with the elders,โ she thought. But she didnโt even know when he got back to Nareigh.
Teresa snapped out of it and smiled at Michael. โHey, no more overthinking, okay? My son is the coolest. Who wouldnโt like you?โ
โBut Mom, Grandma doesnโt like me,โ Michael mumbled.
