Chapter 410
With that, Teresa turned and walked away. A nurse called out, โNumber 13, Jennifer. Are you still going through with the abortion today?โ
Jennifer watched Teresa leave, then quietly shook her head. She decided to wait, tore up the form, tossed it in the trash, and hurried after Teresa.
Teresa arrived at the Golden Bay Complex in Lonisburg. She rang the doorbell. Cheryl shuffled over in loose overalls; her belly was huge and round as she moved slowly to open the door. She peeked through the peephole and saw only Teresa, not realizing Jennifer was right behind her.
When she opened the door, Cheryl clicked her tongue. โWow, both my sisters-in-law showed up? Whatโs the occasion?โ
Jennifer walked in, giving Cheryl a cold stare. โFirst, Teresa isnโt your sister-in-law anymore. Second, if you still think I am, why do you always make things harder for me at the worst possible time?โ
Cheryl looked completely lost and turned to Teresa. โHow did I mess things up?โ
Teresa waved her off. โDonโt mind her. Sheโs just having one of her moods.โ
Hearing that, Jennifer remained silent.
Cheryl didnโt take it to heart. โAlright, you two sit down. Iโll get you some water. Ugh, this belly makes everything a struggle.โ
โJust sit down already,โ Teresa said, still surprised at how big Cherylโs belly was. After all, it had been months since they last saw each other. โMaybe everyoneโs pregnancy is different,โ Teresa thought. When she was pregnant with Michael, even in late pregnancy, her belly was never this big.
Cheryl eased herself onto the sofa, rubbing her back. โMy back is killing me. Teresa, do you think Iโm about to give birth?โ
Teresa pointed at Jennifer. โAsk the expert here. Sheโs a gynecologist.โ
Jennifer pursed her lips and glanced at Cherylโs belly. โHow many weeks along are you?โ
Cheryl counted on her fingers. โWith today included, itโs thirty-eight weeks and five days. The doctor said I could check in, but I didnโt want to go in too soon. I thought I could manage a few more weeks.โ
โA few more weeks? Seriously?โ Jennifer said to Cheryl. โWith a belly like that, your due dateโs basically any day now. Howโs the baby been moving lately?โ
โAbout the same, I guess. I havenโt really paid attention. The baby moves a lot at night. Oh, and Iโve been having more contractions at night these days. Maybe itโs because Iโve been going for night runs? Maybe I overdid it,โ Cheryl replied.
โNight runs?โ Teresa blurted out. โYouโre this pregnant and still running around at night?โ
Cheryl bit her lip, looking a little aggrieved. โThe doctor said some exercise helps with smooth delivery, so Iโve been walking and jogging slowly. I donโt want to be like those TV dramas where it takes three days to give birth. I just want it over in three minutes.โ
โAlright, enough,โ Jennifer interrupted, sounding annoyed. โGo pack your things. Weโre taking you to the hospital.โ
โWhat? The hospital? Now?โ Cheryl asked.
โYou want to wait until your water breaks? By then, itโll be too late,โ Jennifer replied.
Honestly, Cherylโs belly was huge, almost alarming. Jennifer was a doctor, after all. Cheryl couldnโt argue with her.
Teresa, on the other hand, was really worried that Cheryl might have a tough delivery. Cheryl was just a young girl, fresh out of college and pregnant with a guyโs baby. She had been hiding it from her family and was living alone in another city. After everything she had been through, nothing could go wrong now.
On the road, Teresa was driving. Jennifer sat in the front passenger seat, and Cheryl was in the back where it was more spacious.
Cheryl said, โJennifer, I missed your engagement to my brother last time. My parents didnโt give me a hard time about it, did they?โ
