Chapter 412
โWhat? Deal with it then?โ Teresa asked.
โLook, I promise you that Cheryl will make it through this. All we can do now is wait for her to come out safe and sound. Thatโs it,โ Jennifer replied.
Teresa took a deep breath, remembering the big gift sheโd promised Cheryl in the car, before finally speaking. โI just hope Cherylโs okay. No matter what, there are two lives at stake here.โ
โI hope sheโs fine, too,โ Jennifer said. โDo you really think I want something bad to happen to her? Iโm not that heartless.โ
โAlright, enough,โ Teresa raised her hand. โYou and I are nothing alike. We donโt even handle things the same way. Letโs just talk less, okay? Iโm tired of arguing with you.โ
Hearing that, Jennifer remained silent. Waiting always felt endless. Teresa paced outside, checking her watch every so often. Suddenly, her phone rang. It was Michael. Teresa stepped aside to answer the call. โHey, sweetheart, Iโm sorry. Mom might not make it home tonight. You and Aunt Isabel go to bed first, okay? Goodnight.โ
Just then, someone came out of the operating room. Teresa hung up and strode over as the doctor emerged, holding a newborn wrapped in a blanket.
โAre you the family of the patient?โ the doctor asked.
โWe, uh, weโre both her sisters-in-law,โ Teresa replied.
The doctor handed her the baby. โAnd whereโs the dad? His wifeโs giving birth, and heโs not even here? What kind of husband is that?โ
โHeโs out of town,โ Teresa could only say, gazing down at the tiny baby girl in her arms. She reached out and let the babyโs little hand curl around her finger.
Jennifer walked over, looked at the baby, and sighed. โLet me hold her.โ
She took the baby from Teresa with a half-smile and said to the baby, โPoor thing. You donโt even know who your dad is, and your momโs not much better.โ
Teresa was speechless. โOh, so youโre the sensible one? Like youโre not pitiful? If you canโt say anything nice, just zip it. Give her back. Iโll take her to see Cheryl.โ
Seeing that, Jennifer remained silent.
Holding the baby, Teresa said, โAt least both mom and baby are safe. Otherwise, one of us wouldโve had to take the blame.โ
โNeither of us. Youโre not even Cherylโs sister-in-law anymore, so why are you sticking your nose in?โ Jennifer shot back.
That harsh remark stung. Teresa handed the baby back to Jennifer.
Inside the hospital room, Cheryl looked pale and disheveled after giving birth. Jennifer gently placed the baby next to her, and Cheryl stared at her child in disbelief, unable to believe that this little one was really hers.
โThis is so amazing. I actually gave birth to a child,โ Cheryl said, hugging her baby tightly. โSweetheart, your mom went through a lot for you. From now on, itโs just you and me. We donโt need any man in our lives.โ
Jennifer let out a cold laugh. โYou had a baby out of wedlock. No one even knows who the dad is, and thereโs not a guy out there for you.โ
Cheryl puffed out her cheeks. โIโll just work hard and raise my daughter on my own.โ
Jenniferโs face stayed blank. โRaising a kid isnโt as easy as taking care of a pet.โ
โIt canโt be that hard,โ Cheryl glanced at Teresa, whoโd been quiet the whole time. โI can always ask you for help, right, Teresa? Youโve got experience. Teach me your parenting hacks.โ
Teresa gave a half-smile. โI donโt really have much to teach. There are doctors here, and you can always ask Jennifer.โ
