Chapter 438
โAre you done?โ Jonathan shot back calmly, though a clear edge of irritation and coldness was in his eyes. Edwardโs big grin vanished. โWhat, you think my guess is wrong?โ
Benny shook his head. โHonestly, your theory is even crazier than mine. Thereโs no way Jonathan would do that.โ
Edward looked utterly confused, while Benny forced a smile and turned to Michael. โHey Mike, let me ask you something else. Does Teresa usually take care of you? Do you stay with her a lot?โ
Michael had been eating, but suddenly, tears streamed down his cheeks. Jonathan bent down, picked Michael up, and gently ruffled his hair. โHey, donโt listen to these two weird guys. Iโll take you outside for a bit.โ Michael clung tightly to Jonathanโs neck.
Edward glared at Benny. โThis is all your fault. Who asks a kid such weird questions?โ
โWeird? Youโre the weird one. Didnโt you see Jonathanโs face? He looked like he wanted to kill you. Seriously, what goes on in your head?โ
โWhy not? You see it all the time in TV dramasโrich people are always worried theyโll be too old to have kids, so they freeze theirโฆyou knowโฆstuff.โ
โThat doesnโt work on Jonathan,โ Benny said seriously. โHeโd never do that.โ
โWhy not?โ
โBecause all he thinks about is getting back together with Teresa.โ
That finally clicked for Edward. He hurried after them, just as Jonathan was about to leave with Michael in his arms. โWait up, bro! Sorry, I totally put my foot in my mouth today. Donโt be mad; just pretend I was talking nonsense.โ
Jonathan frowned. โYouโre not a kid anymore. Think before you speak. Some things just shouldnโt be said.โ
โI was just guessing. I mean, he really does look a bit like youโฆโ Edwardโs voice trailed off.
Jonathan handed Michael to the driver. Once the boy was in the car, he finally turned to Edward. โSo, what did you want to tell me about Teresa today?โ
โTeresa went to see Irene. I think she wants to get back together with you.โ
โWhat?โ Jonathanโs usually somber eyes suddenly lit up.
Edward continued. โI actually heard it from my mom. Irene was venting to her. She said Teresa came by with gifts, and from the way she talked, it sounded like she wanted to get back together with you.โ
โIrene was really upset and didnโt want Teresa and you to make the same mistakes again, so she complained to Heidi about it.โ
โMy mom thinks Teresaโs only interested now because youโve got money and power, but I told her Teresa isnโt like that.โ
Jonathan pressed his lips together, thinking that maybe this was what Miriam had wanted to tell him. โAlright, I get it,โ he said, then got into the car.
Inside the car, Michael sprawled across Jonathanโs lap. โMr. Lime, whatโs wrong? Are you upset?โ
Jonathan let Michael hold his hand, but his mind kept replaying what Edward had said. His eyes flickered with mixed emotions.
โMr. Lime? Mr. Lime?โ Michael called out a few times before Jonathan finally responded with a quiet, โYeah?โ Michael asked, โEdward said we look alike. Is that true?โ
Jonathan gave a faint smile. No matter how gentle he tried to be, there was still a bit of distance in his eyes when he looked at Michael.
โMike, happy birthday again.โ He stuffed a gift into Michaelโs arms. โWishing you a happy life. Iโve got something to take care of, so Iโll drive you home now.โ
โMr. Lime, can you give me a hug and let me sit on your shoulders?โ
Jonathan granted his wish. All the way to Miriamโs place, he let Michael ride on his shoulders, holding his small hands. Michael wished the ride could last a little longer.
Across the street, Jennifer sat in her Mercedes, gripping the steering wheel as she caught sight of the sweet scene. She pretended not to notice, trusting Teresa hadnโt confronted Jonathan yet.
Jonathan dropped Michael off at Miriamโs and headed out.
โWhereโs Edward?โ Miriam asked Jonathan.
โHeโs out having drinks with Benny,โ Jonathan replied.
Miriamโs eyelid twitched. After Jonathan left, she quickly turned to Michael. โWho did you have lunch with today?โ
After getting the answer, Miriam thought for a moment and decided to let Teresa know.
Teresa came to pick up Michael. Miriam said, โBenny didnโt cause any trouble, did he? I had no idea heโd be there; otherwise, I wouldnโt have let Mike go out.โ
โItโs fine; donโt worry about it,โ Teresa said. โIf Benny wanted to stir things up, heโd come test me first.โ She took Michael and left.
โMom, Mr. Lime gave me a gift,โ Michael waved the gift in his hands.
Teresaโs eyes dimmed a little. โSweetie, Mommy bought you toys, new clothes, and new shoes. Letโs have a proper celebration tonight, okay?โ
Michael nodded, letting Teresa hold his hand, and then started showing off again in his childish voice. โMom, Mr. Lime even let me ride on his shoulders.โ
At the Lynn residence, Jonathan sat across from Irene. After hearing what he said, Irene finally understood. โSo youโre here to question me?โ
โI havenโt even asked you yet. Why did you take your ex-wife with you on a business trip to Shaville? Do you really think thatโs appropriate?โ
โWeโre both single. Why wouldnโt it be appropriate?โ Jonathan shot back.
โHow is that appropriate? Didnโt you promise me youโd move on?โ
โWhy canโt I move on, with her?โ
Jonathanโs offhand reply sent waves through Ireneโs heart. She stared at him in disbelief. โYouโre going to drive me crazy. You finally got out of that mess, and now you want to jump right back in? What could she possibly give you?โ
โHappiness. Fulfillment. Just being with her makes me happy. She gives me motivation and something to look forward to. Isnโt that what being together is all about?โ
Irene wanted to argue back, but couldnโt find the words.
Jonathan tapped his long fingers on the table. โDonโt change the subject. Iโm asking you. Did Teresa come to see you? What did she say? Did you give her a hard time?โ
Irene let out a cold laugh. โShe said she owed you money, that she went to Shaville with you just to pay you back. But from the way she talked, it was obvious she wanted to get back together. Do you really think Iโd be okay with that?โ
โForget about whether she wants to get back together. Iโm asking if you said something harsh to her.โ
โI was just being honest. I told her to give up, to stop shamelessly clinging to you, and to quit showing up wherever you are.โ
At that, Jonathanโs face turned stormy. โCall her. Apologize.โ
โWhat did you say?โ Irene stared at him, thinking sheโd misheard.
โYou heard me; apologize to her. Or Iโll go myself and do it for you. Your choice.โ
