Chapter 440
Teresa handed Cheryl a glass of water and glanced at Serena, who was sitting on the couch. โHowโd you get here?โ
โMe?โ Cheryl blinked. โOf course, I took a cab. I canโt drive, and I donโt even own a car.โ
โYou came all the way from Lonisburg? What do you need from me?โ Teresa asked.
Cheryl grinned. โTeresa, I have to go home today. My parents have been nagging me forever, but I canโt exactly show up with my daughter. So Iโm begging you to watch her for me.โ
Teresa sighed, shaking her head in a mix of disbelief and resignation. โI thought you were finally going to bring her home and face the music.โ
โLike Iโd ever have the guts,โ Cheryl said, looking pitiful. โMy parents would kill me.โ
โSo you come running to me?โ Teresa said. โLast time I gave you over twenty thousand. Iโve done my part. And Iโm not even Jonathanโs wife anymore. If you need help with your kid, shouldnโt you be asking Jennifer?โ
The mention of Jennifer made Cheryl fume. โWhen I had Serena, she wouldnโt even stick around for a few days. She left me in the hospital and just walked off, telling me to handle my own problems. I canโt even begin to understand her.โ
Cheryl downed her water and slammed the glass on the table. โIf I leave Serena with Jennifer, who knows if sheโll even take care of Serena properly? No way. I donโt get what Donald sees in her. I seriously regret setting them up.โ
โI have to look after Mike, and Iโve got work to do. I donโt have the energy to babysit little Serena for you,โ Teresa said, shaking her head. After all, kids at this age were always a handfulโcrying, fussing, and needing their diapers changed constantly. There was never a momentโs peace.
Cheryl pressed her hands together, begging, โTeresa, please. Youโre so kind and amazing, the best. For keeping Mikeโs secret all this time, canโt you just help me out and watch Serena for half a day? I promise Iโll be back before dark to pick her up.โ
Teresa pressed her lips together, hesitating.
Seeing Teresa waver, Cheryl immediately clung to her arm and, with a mischievous grin, reached out to poke her chest.
Teresa rolled her eyes and brushed Cherylโs hand away. โShow some respect, will you?โ
Clutching her hand, Cheryl pouted dramatically. โSo youโre really going to leave us out in the cold? Fine, Iโll just leave with Serena. No one wants usโฆโ
โHavenโt found Serenaโs dad yet?โ Teresa asked.
Cheryl shook her head. โThat jerkโslept with me and never even bothered to check in. Iโve made up my mind. Iโll raise my daughter on my own and just pretend heโs dead.โ
Teresa gave Cheryl a thumbs-up. โThatโs the spirit. Keep it up.โ
โWaitโฆ Teresa, are you praising me or making fun of me? How can you treat me like this? Back when you married Jonathan, I was your bridesmaid. And now youโre just leaving me hanging,โ Cheryl said.
Suddenly, she heard her phone ring and began frantically searching through her pockets. But the ringtone wasnโt coming from her phone but from Teresaโs. When Teresa saw the caller ID, her heart skipped a beatโit was Benny, as expected. She held up a hand to silence Cheryl, answered the call, and stepped into the bedroom to talk.
Bennyโs voice came through. โYouโre home, right? My client gave me some organic superfoods. I donโt really need this stuff and thought Iโd bring it over for you.โ
Teresa replied, โI already have plenty at home, I canโt finish them all. Why donโt you give them to Miriam?โ
Benny laughed. โCome on, Iโm way closer to you than to Miriam. Whenever I get something good, youโre the first person I think of, you know? Besides, a cup of coffee.โ Iโm already at your door. At least let me in forโฆ
Teresa gritted her teeth in frustration. โNice one, Bennyโshowing up this early in the morning. You must have figured thereโs no way I wouldnโt be home at this hour.โ
Just then, a babyโs cry drifted through the door, faint but unmistakable. Teresa quickly covered the phoneโs mic, but Benny had already heard it. He asked, โWhy do I hear a baby crying?โ
Teresa replied, โNo, you mustโve misheard.โ
โNo way, thereโs definitely a baby there with you.โ
โCherylโs here,โ Teresa said quickly, thinking on her feet. โIโll send her down. You can give the stuff to her.โ
โWhat?โ Benny was caught off guard for a second.
โThatโs settled then,โ Teresa said, hanging up before he could say more. Then she opened the door and saw Cheryl cradling Serena, rocking her gently. Cheryl apologized, looking flustered. โIโm so sorry, Teresa. I didnโt mean for this to happen. She must have wet herself, and thatโs why sheโs crying. Iโll go change her diaper right away.โ
โWait up.โ Teresa grabbed Cherylโs hand. โIโll take care of herโjust hurry downstairs. Bennyโs coming over. He heard Serena crying earlier and thinks Iโm hiding a baby here.โ
Cheryl caught on right away. โBenny just wonโt give up, huh? Fine, you look after Serena, and Iโll go deal with him.โ
โYeah, just watch what you say, okay?โ
Cheryl nodded and headed downstairs. Then Teresa went to change Serenaโs diaper.
With a fresh diaper, Serena was all comfy, kicking her legs and grinning up at Teresa. Teresa couldnโt help but smile back. Even though Serena was still tiny, it was clear she had Cherylโs eyes.
โMom, who was crying just now?โ Michael shuffled over in his muffin pajamas, rubbing his eyes.
โOh, youโre awake. Did the noise wake you up?โ
Michael dropped his hands, spotted Serena on the bed, and instantly perked up. He hurried over. โMom, did you secretly have a baby sister for me?โ
โNo, silly, thatโs your Aunt Cherylโs baby.โ
โWow, Aunt Cheryl had a baby!โ Michael squatted down, cupping his face as he stared at Serena. โBut Aunt Cheryl promised to get me a puppy.โ
Teresa grinned. โLuckily she isnโt here, or youโll be in trouble.โ
Michael reached out and gently poked Serenaโs cheek, and then his own, looking a little put out. โMom, her skin feels better than mine.โ
Teresa was once again amused by his innocent words.
Cheryl hopped right into the passenger seat next to Benny, pulled a cactus toy out of her bag, and handed it over. โHere, Benny, try this out. Just press it and itโll wiggle and make noise.โ
Benny gave it a press, and the cactus started squeaking and squirming. Cheryl grinned. โPretty funny, right? Doesnโt it sound just like a baby crying?โ
Benny raised an eyebrow, studying her face. โTrying to distract me, huh?โ
Cheryl blinked as if she knew nothing at all. โWhat are you talking about?โ
Benny unbuckled his seatbelt. โWait here. Iโm going to see Teresa for a minute.โ
