Chapter 497
โAlright, Iโm heading over now,โ Jonathan said, hanging up the phone. Teresa had overheard and said, โThanks for today. If anything comes up, let me know. I really want to find out if that old lady is actually your grandma. If she is, we should talk.โ
Jonathan unlocked his car. โDonโt assume the worst. Get some sleep, and Iโll reach out when I know more.โ
โOkay,โ Teresa replied, watching as Jonathan drove away.
Gordon had already woken up in the hospital. Irene, Heidi, Edward, Donald, and Jennifer stood by his bedside. When Jonathan arrived, Edward filled him in: โGordon was just mumbling to Jennifer.โ
Jonathan frowned. โWhat do you mean, mumbling?โ
Jennifer said, โIโm not going to demand an apology from someone who isnโt in his right mind. So letโs just leave it at that.โ
Irene suddenly cut in, โSo, what do you want?โ
Jennifer ignored Irene. She looked at Jonathan and said, โLetโs stay out of each otherโs way. Donโt mess with my family, and we wonโt mess with yours.โ Irene thought Jennifer was talking about Teresa, which was exactly what she wanted.
Jennifer added coldly, โIf Gordon isnโt stable and you let him out again, and he hurts me or my family, I wonโt just sit back and take it.โ
Jonathanโs eyes darkened. โSorry. All this drama is just over a bracelet. It was my grandmaโs, and thatโs why my grandpa lost it. If we can help him get over it, everything else will be fine.โ
Jennifer retorted, โThe bracelet was a gift from my adoptive mother. It has nothing to do with your family. If you bother her, Iโll just assume youโre using this as an excuse to pester my sister again.โ
Donald was shocked and tugged at Jennifer, clearly unhappy with her bluntness. Irene finally lost it. โWatch your mouth! My son isnโt into her!โ
Jonathan cut her off. โEven if I tried to force Teresa to do anything, with her temper, she wouldnโt listen to me anyway.โ
โGood,โ Jennifer said, turning to leave. Donald followed, fuming because of Jenniferโs harshness.
โI just wanted Irene and her family to know Iโm not someone they can mess with,โ Jennifer said.
Donald said, โBut did you ever think about me? You were so harsh to Jonathan and Irene right in front of me. Now theyโll think I was okay with it. Jonathanโs always been good to me, you know.โ
โYou just keep giving in to them, and they keep pushing their luck,โ Jennifer retorted.
Donald felt completely drained. He wondered, โHow long is she going to keep going on about this?โ
Donald said, โHeโs an old man with dementia. He didnโt ruin our wedding on purpose. Youโre making things way too complicated. Jennifer, weโre married nowโweโre supposed to be a family. Why do you always shut me out?โ
Jenniferโs heart sank. โSo now youโre blaming me?โ
Donald didnโt say another word. He opened the car door for her, and they drove the whole way in silence.
Jennifer noticed he had a new car. He never told her where the money came from, and she never asked. She had her suspicions, but since he never brought it up, she kept quiet too.
Irene was so angry at Jennifer she was about to explode. Heidi kept trying to calm her down, secretly thinking, โThank goodness Jennifer isnโt my daughter-in-law. Thereโs no way Iโd ever agree to that marriage.โ
Jonathan was trying to feed Gordon, but he refused, swatting Jonathanโs hand away so hard that the fork crashed to the floor.
โIโll go get a new one,โ Edward said, quickly slipping out of the room.
Heidi looked at Gordon helplessly. โDad, can you please calm down? Youโre scaring us.โ
Gordon looked around in confusion, mumbling to himself, โWhereโs Fiona?โ
Jonathan said, โEat your food, and Iโll take you to see Fiona.โ
Gordon slammed his hand on the bed in anger. โIf you donโt bring me Fiona, Iโm not eating!โ
Jonathanโs voice was low and steady. โIf Fiona sees you refusing to eat, sheโll be upset.โ
Gordon paused, then turned to Jonathan. โWhereโs my food? Give me food. I want to eat.โ
Irene and Heidi hurried to bring over a fresh meal. Jonathan patiently fed Gordon, spoonful by spoonful. Once he was full, Jonathan said, โFionaโs asleep right now. Are you sure you want to go see her?โ
Gordon said, โIโll wake her up.โ
Jonathan thought for a few seconds and said, โShe doesnโt want you to wake her. Iโll bring her to see you tomorrow.โ
With a loud crash, Gordon threw the fork to the floor again. โYouโre lying to me!โ
Jonathan looked at Gordon calmly. โI have her number. Iโll call her for you, and you can talk to her yourself.โ
Gordon suddenly looked nervous. โFionaโs sleeping. If I call and wake her up, sheโll be upset.โ
Jonathan nodded. โThatโs why I said you should get some rest first. Youโll see her tomorrow.โ
Gordon grabbed Jonathanโs hand. โGive me a haircut. My hairโs too long. I look messy.โ
Jonathan agreed, saying heโd get a barber to come by. After settling Gordon, Irene and Heidi exchanged glances, both wondering, โHas Jonathan really found Fiona, or was he just saying that to comfort Gordon?โ
Jonathan didnโt explain. His phone rang, and he stepped out to take the call. Whatever he heard seemed to put him at ease. He said, โTell the medical team to do everything they can to help that old lady. I want her awake by tomorrow if possible.โ
There was still hope. Jonathan had already brought in the best medical team to treat her, just hoping she could wake upโeven if it was only for ten minutes, or half an hour.
Jonathan hurried to another hospital and sat outside the consultation room. Earlier, a doctor had told him that Fiona had moved her fingers that morning, and her eyelids had fluttered a littleโclearly, she had a strong will to live. Thankfully, her son-in-law was pretty reasonable. He trusted the medical team Jonathan had put together and agreed to a transfer if it became necessary.
It was late at night, and the hallway was dead quiet. Jonathan was the only one there. The sound of footsteps drew closer, and he glanced over to see Teresa taking the seat beside him.
โWhy donโt you go get some rest? Iโll stay here and keep watch,โ Teresa said.
โNo need,โ Jonathan replied.
โSeriously, you should try to get some sleep. If she really is your grandmother, Iโll find the best lawyer to make sure Charlie gets a harsher sentence, and weโll deal with the compensation too.โ
Suddenly, Teresa felt a weight on her shoulder. Jonathan had fallen asleep, leaning against her. She lifted her hand, almost reaching out to touch his face, but stopped herself.
