Chapter 547
Suddenly, a knock sounded at the door. Sanford wiped away his tears and turned toward the door. He frowned slightly at the sight of the visitor. Liora hesitated, the truth on the tip of her tongue, but she forced herself to swallow back the words sheโd almost blurted out. Werner motioned for Sanford to step outside. Sanford frowned, puzzled. โWhat do you want?โ he asked. โSanford, step outside with me for a moment,โ Werner said. Sanford pursed his lips, then finally stood up. Liora grabbed Sanfordโs hand firmly and said to Werner, โSanford has nothing to do with your Lynn family anymore. If Hayden sent you here, you should just leave.โ
Werner looked helplessly at Liora. Liora pressed her lips together. Werner insisted, โKid, just come out for a minute.โ With that, he walked out first. Sanford reassured Liora, โDonโt worry, Mom. Iโll be fine. Iโll just see what he wants.โ Outside, Werner handed Sanford a bank card. Sanford stared at the bank card, bewildered. He asked, โWhatโs this supposed to mean?โ Werner explained, โI was the first to get your mother to the hospital when she fainted. Iโve been briefed on her condition. Hereโs 100 thousand. Take this for now; itโs for your motherโs treatment.โ Sanford sneered, โThanks, Werner, but my mom and I donโt need this money.โ Wernerโs eyes widened in shock. He asked, โHow did you know my name?โ Sanford said, โGrandpa pulled me aside and told me that. He even said I look like you.โ Wernerโs eyelid twitched violently. He asked, โWhat else did Hayden tell you?โ Sanford fixed Werner with a piercing stare and asked, โWhy are you being so defensive?โ Werner forced a smile and said, โIโm just worried Hayden mightโve told you some nonsense he shouldnโt have. You know how it is. Haydenโs getting on in years, not all there mentally these days.โ Wernerโs expression turned subtly conflicted, which made Sanford think to himself, โSomethingโs off here.โ
Sanford pressed, โWhat exactly do you mean by โthings he shouldnโt have saidโ? Be honest with me, is there something between my parents I donโt know about?โ Werner grew increasingly uncomfortable as he listened. He said, โI do not know what happened between the two of them.โ Sanford said flatly, โOkay.โ Then he pulled out a pen from his pocket and wrote down his phone number for Werner. He said, โIf anything comes to your mind, feel free to give me a call. Anytime.โ โHey!โ Werner called out as Sanford was about to leave. He said, โHow about we grab a bite before I head back to Nareigh? My treat. What would you like to have?โ Sanford thought, โWhether you go back to Nareigh or not is none of my business. You are just a distant uncle I barely know.โ Werner added, his tone deliberately casual, โHave dinner with me. Maybe thatโll jog my memory.โ Hearing this, Sanford studied him for a long moment before finally conceding, โFine.โ They went to a nearby restaurant, but Sanford had no appetite. All he wanted was to finish the meal quickly, hurry back to take care of Liora, andโmost importantlyโuncover the truth about what had happened all those years ago. Werner added some food to Sanfordโs plate with his fork and said, โYou look pretty skinny. What do you weigh?โ Sanford answered distractedly, โAbout 154 pounds.โ Werner said, โYouโre about the same build as Donald, similar height and all. You should eat more; youโre way too skinny.โ Sanford cut him off bluntly, โThanks for your concern. Didnโt know you cared so much about your elder brotherโs bastard child.โ Werner choked on his words, his face darkening as he fell silent. Sanford set down his fork and said, โIโm done. Can I ask you something?โ Wernerโs expression turned grave. He asked, โWhat is it you want to know?โ
