Chapter 639
โOur child?โ Jonathan suddenly understood what she meant. His gaze darkened with complex emotions. โHey, itโs okay. I was never mad that you were on contraceptive pills before. Weโll have our childโฆ in due time.โ
โNo, thatโs not it. Iโฆโ Teresa started to say, but her phone rang, interrupting her struggle to get the words out. She frowned at the name on the screen and immediately hit ignore.
โThat was Jennifer, right?โ Jonathan asked. โWhy didnโt you pick up?โ
โItโs not important,โ Teresa said. โI just donโt want to talk to her right now.โ
She looked back at him, clenching her fists in her lap. โThe truth is, Iโฆโ
Her phone rang. It was Jennifer. And again, Teresa declined the call.
โYou should probably get that,โ Jonathan said gently. โWhat if itโs something important?โ
Teresa shook her head. โI know exactly why sheโs calling. She must have seen the fireworks. She doesnโt want me to get back with you and repeat the same mistakes.โ
The words had barely left her mouth when another phone started ringing. This time, it was Jonathanโs.
He answered, his brow furrowing tighter and tighter as he listened. โGot it,โ he said sharply, then hung up.
The look on his face made her stomach clench. โJonathan, what is it?โ
โMy grandpa had a stroke. Heโs at the hospital,โ Jonathan said.
โOh my god,โ Teresa breathed. โHow?โ
โHey, itโs okay. They got to him fast. The doctors say heโs stable for now,โ Jonathan said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.
โA stroke?โ Teresa thought to herself. โBut Haydenโs always been so healthy. And why now, right when I was about to tell Jonathan everything?โ
Jonathanโs phone buzzed again. It was Irene this time, telling him to get to the hospital ASAP.
Teresa snapped out of her thoughts and said gently, โYou should go to the hospital. Iโll just grab a cab home.โ
โIโm driving you home,โ Jonathan insisted. โItโll be just a short detour.โ
Teresa didnโt fight him on it. Beautiful moments were just like fireworksโdazzling and magical for a heartbeat, then gone. And then they went back to real life.
The rest of the drive was silent. As they pulled up to her place in Rosary Estates, Teresa unbuckled her seatbelt. โThank you for the ride. Now go, get to the hospital.โ
She went to get out, but Jonathan grabbed her hand. Looking into those intense eyes of his, she knew exactly what he was thinking. โI promise, Iโll think about it,โ she said. โThe remarriage thing.โ
โYeah, think about it.โ Jonathan let her hand slip away slowly, his eyes following her until she was out of sight.
When Jonathan arrived at the hospital, Hayden was already awake. Werner was a mess on the floor, sobbing his eyes out. Hayden looked at Werner with nothing but disappointment in his eyes.
โJonathan, youโre finally here,โ Irene said as she hurried over.
Jonathan frowned, stepping closer to the bed. โGrandpa.โ
Hayden snorted angrily, โSo, you all decided to keep me in the dark. Let me be the last fool to find out.โ
โAbout what, Grandpa?โ Jonathan asked.
โThat Werner and Cathy are divorced.โ Haydenโs voice trembled with rage. โAnd that Gary isnโt Yorickโs son. He belongs to Werner, God!โ
โDad, please, just calm down. Donโt get yourself worked up-โ Werner pleaded, but Hayden shut him up with one glare.
โShut up. If I die today, you can be damn sure itโs because you stressed me to death.โ With that, Hayden broke into another fit of violent coughing.
Jonathanโs frown deepened. He thought, โWho told Grandpa about Garyโs real father and Wernerโs divorce? Werner never wouldโve confessed, Cathyโs in Soronfield, so it wasnโt her. And Donald doesnโt have a big mouthโฆโ
โGrandpa, take it easy. Who told you all this?โ Jonathan asked.
