Chapter 649

Jennifer thought to herself, โ€œIโ€™ve lost my dearest sister and my closest friend. In one fell swoop, both were gone!โ€

The ringing phone snapped Jennifer out of her thoughts. Seeing Donaldโ€™s name on the caller ID, she hastily wiped away her tears. โ€œDonald is at the hospital now. I canโ€™t lose him either,โ€ she thought desperately, โ€œI canโ€™t take it anymore.โ€

โ€œMiriam, Iโ€™m here to pick up Michael.โ€ Teresa had already arrived at Miriamโ€™s doorstep. Sheโ€™d called ahead, and Miriam let her in.

โ€œMike is still asleep. Have a seat and Iโ€™ll get you some water,โ€

As Teresa sat on the sofa, Miriam brought her some water. Earlier, when Teresa had just walked in, Miriam had already noticed the tears in her eyes and knew something must have happened. She asked with concern, โ€œHowโ€™s your mom? Is it breast cancer?โ€

Teresa shook her head. โ€œMiriam, you were right. My momโ€™s cancer report was forged, and Jennifer did it.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Miriam was livid. โ€œHow could that woman do this? Does she have no professional ethics at all?โ€

โ€œShe wanted me out of Nareighโ€“she just didnโ€™t want Jonathan to find out about Mike.โ€

Miriam was a bit puzzled. โ€œWhy is Jennifer so desperate for Teresa to leave Nareigh?โ€ she wondered. Under her persistent questioning, Teresa finally cracked under pressure and told her the whole truth.

Miriam was utterly stunned. She never imagined Jennifer would repeatedly abuse her professional position to forge medical reports, while Teresa had been completely in the dark at first.

Miriam exploded, โ€œThat womanโ€™s insane! Iโ€™m going to confront her right now.โ€

Miriam, fuming, was about to storm out, but Teresa quickly grabbed her arm. โ€œForget it,โ€ Teresa didnโ€™t want to drag Miriam into her mess.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll go find Jonathan. Iโ€™ll tell him that Mike is his son.โ€

โ€œMiriam,โ€ Teresa held her back. โ€œNot now. His grandfather just had a stroke and is hospitalized at Jenniferโ€™s hospital. Donald is there too. I canโ€™t drop this bombshell at a time like this.โ€

Miriam gritted her teeth. She had no choice but to sit back down. โ€œEdward told me that Jonathan asked him to help plan something for the 10th anniversary of meeting you.โ€

โ€œI had no idea you two had known each other that long. I even told Benny I was sure you guys were getting back together this time. I thought youโ€™d finally come clean to Jonathan.โ€

Teresa stayed silent, letting Miriam talk.

โ€œTeresa,โ€ Miriam said, โ€œwhat if Jennifer isnโ€™t your sister?โ€

That snapped Teresa out of her thoughts. She rubbed her weary temples and said, โ€œHow could that be possible?โ€

Miriam said sharply, โ€œDid you two ever get a DNA test? I remember you told me that you two only recognized each other as sisters after Jenniferโ€™s car accident.

โ€œBut she just claimed to be your sister, Hannah. You never did a DNA test, did you?โ€

Teresa shook her head. โ€œNo, we never did a DNA test. But she knows every little detail about my childhoodโ€“even why she disappeared. She explained everything to me, clearly and thoroughly. She is Hannah, my longโ€“lost sister from childhood.โ€

Now it was Miriamโ€™s turn to fall silent, a new wave of contemplation sweeping through her eyes.

Michael woke up, rushed out of his room, and immediately threw himself into Teresaโ€™s arms. โ€œI missed you so much. You came back so late,โ€ he pouted.

Teresa gently ruffled Michaelโ€™s hair and stood up. โ€œSorry to keep you waiting, sweetie. Letโ€™s go home.โ€

After saying goodbye to Miriam, Teresa took Michael home. On her way back, Teresa spotted someone lingering near the entrance to her apartment complex. A closer look revealed it was Gary.

Gary approached Teresa and asked anxiously, โ€œWhere have you two been? Did you go to Gothany?โ€

Teresa shook her head. โ€œI wonโ€™t leave Nareigh, nor do I need to.โ€

Garyโ€™s brow relaxed, โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œAnd Jonathan, how is he holding up now?โ€

Gary knew exactly who Teresa was talking about: Jonathan, the man who had always been kept in the dark. Gary sighed. โ€œHeโ€™s not doing well. He wonโ€™t pick up my calls.

โ€œHis assistant said heโ€™s been holed up at the office this whole time.โ€ Teresaโ€™s eyes clouded with sadness.

Gary said, โ€œI know Jennifer did this. She wanted you gone. But I never thought she could be this vicious. She knew my grandpaโ€™s blood pressure was high, but still provoked him. Now that youโ€™re back, Teresa, what are you going to do?โ€

Teresa fell silent for a long moment before steering the conversation away. โ€œHowโ€™s your grandpa doing now?โ€

โ€œHis conditionโ€™s been up and down. His blood pressure just wonโ€™t come down. Werner is looking after him, and, wellโ€ฆ Irene also drops by to check on him.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll take Mike home now.โ€

Teresaโ€™s brow furrowed again at the mention of Irene. โ€œOkay. I hope he recovers soon.โ€

โ€œHey, Teresaโ€ฆโ€ Gary stopped her. โ€œYou should talk to my brother right now. Just tell him you never went to Gorthany. I think thereโ€™s still time to fix this.โ€

Michael looked up at Teresa with wideโ€“eyed innocence. โ€œMommy, whoโ€™s the โ€˜brotherโ€™ he is talking about?โ€

Teresa took a deep breath, squeezing Michaelโ€™s small hand. โ€œI just got home, and Iโ€™m exhausted. I want to go home now. Mike,โ€ She said wearily, โ€œCome on, buddy.โ€

Gary frowned and no longer tried to stop her.

โ€œJennifer. Get out here right now!โ€ Miriamโ€™s furious shout ripped through the hospital corridor that afternoon.

โ€œMaโ€™am,โ€ Lucia blocked Miriamโ€™s path and said, โ€œJennifer is on her break right now. If youโ€™d like a consultation, you can schedule an appointment for this afternoon.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not here for a consultation. Iโ€™m here to have it out with her.โ€

โ€œMaโ€™am, wait.โ€ Lucia ran after Miriam to stop her. โ€œGoodness, whatโ€™s going on these days? Why do so many people come to make things difficult with Jennifer?โ€

Jennifer stepped out of her break room and immediately scowled when she spotted Miriam standing there. She snapped, โ€œMiriam, have you no shame, making such a scene here?โ€

โ€œShame?โ€ Miriam sneered, raising her voice on purpose. โ€œIf youโ€™re not afraid of it, why should I be? Have you got a shred of conscience? Look at yourselfโ€“do you even deserve to wear that white coat?โ€

Jenniferโ€™s expression darkened. She swiftly yanked Miriam inside and slammed the door shut. โ€œMiriam, Iโ€™m warning you, watch your mouth. Donโ€™t you dare ruin my reputation.โ€

Miriam scoffed, savagely gripping Jenniferโ€™s hair as she glared at her. โ€œIf your reputationโ€™s ruined, itโ€™s because youโ€™re utterly despicableโ€“nothing to do with me.โ€

โ€œLet go of me!โ€ Jennifer shrieked.

โ€œDo you even realize how desperately Teresa longed for her familyโ€™s companionship? Where were you, her โ€œsister,โ€ when your parents divorced? After all these years, even after you finally reunited, you still havenโ€™t protected her one bit.โ€

Jenniferโ€™s scalp burned with pain, feeling as though Miriam was about to rip her hair clean off her head. Jennifer gasped sharply, her nails digging into Miriamโ€™s palm. โ€œAre you out of your mind? Let go right now!โ€

Miriam tightened her grip on Jenniferโ€™s long hair, gave it a vicious yank, and then finally released her.
