Chapter 649
Jennifer thought to herself, โIโve lost my dearest sister and my closest friend. In one fell swoop, both were gone!โ
The ringing phone snapped Jennifer out of her thoughts. Seeing Donaldโs name on the caller ID, she hastily wiped away her tears. โDonald is at the hospital now. I canโt lose him either,โ she thought desperately, โI canโt take it anymore.โ
โMiriam, Iโm here to pick up Michael.โ Teresa had already arrived at Miriamโs doorstep. Sheโd called ahead, and Miriam let her in.
โMike is still asleep. Have a seat and Iโll get you some water,โ
As Teresa sat on the sofa, Miriam brought her some water. Earlier, when Teresa had just walked in, Miriam had already noticed the tears in her eyes and knew something must have happened. She asked with concern, โHowโs your mom? Is it breast cancer?โ
Teresa shook her head. โMiriam, you were right. My momโs cancer report was forged, and Jennifer did it.โ
โWhat?โ Miriam was livid. โHow could that woman do this? Does she have no professional ethics at all?โ
โShe wanted me out of Nareighโshe just didnโt want Jonathan to find out about Mike.โ
Miriam was a bit puzzled. โWhy is Jennifer so desperate for Teresa to leave Nareigh?โ she wondered. Under her persistent questioning, Teresa finally cracked under pressure and told her the whole truth.
Miriam was utterly stunned. She never imagined Jennifer would repeatedly abuse her professional position to forge medical reports, while Teresa had been completely in the dark at first.
Miriam exploded, โThat womanโs insane! Iโm going to confront her right now.โ
Miriam, fuming, was about to storm out, but Teresa quickly grabbed her arm. โForget it,โ Teresa didnโt want to drag Miriam into her mess.
โThen Iโll go find Jonathan. Iโll tell him that Mike is his son.โ
โMiriam,โ Teresa held her back. โNot now. His grandfather just had a stroke and is hospitalized at Jenniferโs hospital. Donald is there too. I canโt drop this bombshell at a time like this.โ
Miriam gritted her teeth. She had no choice but to sit back down. โEdward told me that Jonathan asked him to help plan something for the 10th anniversary of meeting you.โ
โI had no idea you two had known each other that long. I even told Benny I was sure you guys were getting back together this time. I thought youโd finally come clean to Jonathan.โ
Teresa stayed silent, letting Miriam talk.
โTeresa,โ Miriam said, โwhat if Jennifer isnโt your sister?โ
That snapped Teresa out of her thoughts. She rubbed her weary temples and said, โHow could that be possible?โ
Miriam said sharply, โDid you two ever get a DNA test? I remember you told me that you two only recognized each other as sisters after Jenniferโs car accident.
โBut she just claimed to be your sister, Hannah. You never did a DNA test, did you?โ
Teresa shook her head. โNo, we never did a DNA test. But she knows every little detail about my childhoodโeven why she disappeared. She explained everything to me, clearly and thoroughly. She is Hannah, my longโlost sister from childhood.โ
Now it was Miriamโs turn to fall silent, a new wave of contemplation sweeping through her eyes.
Michael woke up, rushed out of his room, and immediately threw himself into Teresaโs arms. โI missed you so much. You came back so late,โ he pouted.
Teresa gently ruffled Michaelโs hair and stood up. โSorry to keep you waiting, sweetie. Letโs go home.โ
After saying goodbye to Miriam, Teresa took Michael home. On her way back, Teresa spotted someone lingering near the entrance to her apartment complex. A closer look revealed it was Gary.
Gary approached Teresa and asked anxiously, โWhere have you two been? Did you go to Gothany?โ
Teresa shook her head. โI wonโt leave Nareigh, nor do I need to.โ
Garyโs brow relaxed, โGood.โ
โAnd Jonathan, how is he holding up now?โ
Gary knew exactly who Teresa was talking about: Jonathan, the man who had always been kept in the dark. Gary sighed. โHeโs not doing well. He wonโt pick up my calls.
โHis assistant said heโs been holed up at the office this whole time.โ Teresaโs eyes clouded with sadness.
Gary said, โI know Jennifer did this. She wanted you gone. But I never thought she could be this vicious. She knew my grandpaโs blood pressure was high, but still provoked him. Now that youโre back, Teresa, what are you going to do?โ
Teresa fell silent for a long moment before steering the conversation away. โHowโs your grandpa doing now?โ
โHis conditionโs been up and down. His blood pressure just wonโt come down. Werner is looking after him, and, wellโฆ Irene also drops by to check on him.โ
โIโll take Mike home now.โ
Teresaโs brow furrowed again at the mention of Irene. โOkay. I hope he recovers soon.โ
โHey, Teresaโฆโ Gary stopped her. โYou should talk to my brother right now. Just tell him you never went to Gorthany. I think thereโs still time to fix this.โ
Michael looked up at Teresa with wideโeyed innocence. โMommy, whoโs the โbrotherโ he is talking about?โ
Teresa took a deep breath, squeezing Michaelโs small hand. โI just got home, and Iโm exhausted. I want to go home now. Mike,โ She said wearily, โCome on, buddy.โ
Gary frowned and no longer tried to stop her.
โJennifer. Get out here right now!โ Miriamโs furious shout ripped through the hospital corridor that afternoon.
โMaโam,โ Lucia blocked Miriamโs path and said, โJennifer is on her break right now. If youโd like a consultation, you can schedule an appointment for this afternoon.โ
โIโm not here for a consultation. Iโm here to have it out with her.โ
โMaโam, wait.โ Lucia ran after Miriam to stop her. โGoodness, whatโs going on these days? Why do so many people come to make things difficult with Jennifer?โ
Jennifer stepped out of her break room and immediately scowled when she spotted Miriam standing there. She snapped, โMiriam, have you no shame, making such a scene here?โ
โShame?โ Miriam sneered, raising her voice on purpose. โIf youโre not afraid of it, why should I be? Have you got a shred of conscience? Look at yourselfโdo you even deserve to wear that white coat?โ
Jenniferโs expression darkened. She swiftly yanked Miriam inside and slammed the door shut. โMiriam, Iโm warning you, watch your mouth. Donโt you dare ruin my reputation.โ
Miriam scoffed, savagely gripping Jenniferโs hair as she glared at her. โIf your reputationโs ruined, itโs because youโre utterly despicableโnothing to do with me.โ
โLet go of me!โ Jennifer shrieked.
โDo you even realize how desperately Teresa longed for her familyโs companionship? Where were you, her โsister,โ when your parents divorced? After all these years, even after you finally reunited, you still havenโt protected her one bit.โ
Jenniferโs scalp burned with pain, feeling as though Miriam was about to rip her hair clean off her head. Jennifer gasped sharply, her nails digging into Miriamโs palm. โAre you out of your mind? Let go right now!โ
Miriam tightened her grip on Jenniferโs long hair, gave it a vicious yank, and then finally released her.
