Chapter 748

Jonathan raised an eyebrow. โ€œI didnโ€™t sue Jennifer just because she was your sister. But sheโ€™s not anymore. I checked into itโ€“she even covered up the records of you giving birth to Mike at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital.โ€

โ€œMiriam said Jennifer was scared of losing her career, so she didnโ€™t want Mike and me to reunite. She kicked you out of the car halfway and treated you terribly. Why should I bother about her?"

โ€œSince sheโ€™s so afraid of losing her career, Iโ€™ll make sure she gets what she fears most.โ€

Teresa saw the icy determination in Jonathanโ€™s eyes and asked, โ€œWhat else did you do?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve contacted the mediaโ€“theyโ€™re scrambling to expose her for abusing her power and faking reports. Since she refuses to admit her mistakes, Iโ€™ll make sure her reputation is destroyed for good,โ€ Jonathan said, looking like he wouldnโ€™t stop until Jennifer had nothing left.

After Jennifer repeatedly threatened and tried to keep Teresa from letting him reunite with Michael, Jonathan had been pushed over the edge. Now, he was hell-bent on making her pay.

โ€˜Heโ€™s determined to push Jennifer to the edge.โ€™ Teresa couldnโ€™t bring herself to smile. She slumped onto the couch, feeling completely powerless. There was nothing she could do to stop Jonathan now. After a long pause, she said quietly, โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

Jonathan asked, โ€œSorry for what? It was Jennifer who threatened you and wouldnโ€™t let you tell the truth.โ€

Teresa stayed silent.

Jonathan stared at her, feeling defeated. โ€œJust give me a straight answer. Did she threaten you? Did she stop you from telling me the truth about Mike? Did you keep quiet because you were afraid it would ruin her career?โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ Teresa faltered.

โ€œJust say itโ€“yes or no,โ€ Jonathan pressed.

Teresa was silent for a long time before finally nodding. She buried her face in her hands, at a complete loss for words.

Jonathan sat across from her, leaning back in his chair. โ€œSo you kept quiet about our son just for someone like her? Unbelievable.โ€

Teresa remained silent. She covered her face with her hands, her eyes red.

Jonathan took a deep breath. โ€œPut your hands down and look at me. Why didnโ€™t you say anything?โ€

Teresa finally looked up at him, her eyes brimming with tears. โ€œWhat do you want me to say? If I tell the truth, Iโ€™ll be the one to blame. It will affect both Jennifer and Sherry, especially Jennifer.

โ€œI always thought she was my sister. She had such a hard childhood, and after we reconnected, she would always remind me that I was her only family left. How could I just turn a blind eye to that?โ€

Jonathan tapped his fingers on the table. โ€œSo youโ€™re always worried about their feelings, but you never once think about mine?โ€

Teresa went quiet again, fighting back her emotions as she pressed her lips together.

โ€œYou donโ€™t care about me at all,โ€ Jonathan said, and at that moment, he accepted it. Teresa didnโ€™t love him, didn't even care about how much it hurt him to be kept from his child.

โ€œAnd you donโ€™t care about Mikeโ€™s feelings either. You donโ€™t care if he grows up without a father, or if heโ€™ll end up feeling insecure because of it. Am I right?โ€ Jonathan pressed.

Teresa frowned. โ€œHow could I not think about it? Do you even realizeโ€“โ€ Her voice broke as she choked up.

Since she didnโ€™t elaborate, Jonathan pressed, โ€œRealize what?โ€

Teresa took a deep breath, at a loss for words. She didnโ€™t know how to tell him about her fear of Irene, or about all the slander and threats Irene had thrown at her.

She didnโ€™t want Jonathan to end up fighting with the woman whoโ€™d raised him. Even less did she want him caught in the middle. After all, that was his mom.

Jonathan spoke slowly, โ€œYouโ€™re just a fool. You canโ€™t even figure things out, letting some outsider who isnโ€™t even your sister control you. Youโ€™re always worrying about things that donโ€™t even matter and running yourself ragged.โ€

โ€œGet out!โ€ Teresa snapped, pointing toward the door. She didnโ€™t want to argue with him. But this time, he started it.

โ€œFine, just drive me crazy if you want,โ€ Jonathan said, grabbing the lawsuit papers from the table.

โ€œStop right there,โ€ Teresa called out.

Jonathan turned around slowly. โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œPut those lawsuit papers down. Are you really going to sue her?โ€

โ€œEven if I donโ€™t sue her, itโ€™s too late.โ€

Teresa froze. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

Jonathan said, โ€œI bet the media has exposed Jenniferโ€™s scandal now. Her reputation is destroyed, and sheโ€™ll never work as a doctor again.โ€

โ€œLook, she canโ€™t be a doctor anymore. Thatโ€™s punishment enough,โ€ Teresa said softly. โ€œLetโ€™s just drop it. Suing her wonโ€™t solve anything, especially since weโ€™re still family.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Jonathan raised an eyebrow, taking a moment to steady himself. โ€œThe test results said sheโ€™s not your sister, so how are you two still family?โ€

โ€œThe day my mom gave birth, her cousin was also in labor at the same hospital. Itโ€™s possible the babies got switched. If thatโ€™s the case, then Jennifer isnโ€™t my sisterโ€“sheโ€™s my cousin,โ€ Teresa explained.

Jonathan rubbed his forehead, looking exasperated. โ€œSo whereโ€™s your sister?โ€

โ€œI have no idea. Maybe itโ€™s not even a sisterโ€“maybe itโ€™s a brother,โ€ Teresa said.

Jonathan was speechless. The look on his face practically screamed, โ€œHow is your family tree such a mess?โ€

Teresa stayed silent. โ€˜Itโ€™s not like I want my family to be this complicated, but this is the mess Iโ€™m stuck with. What else could I do except deal with it?โ€™

Jonathan got back to the point. โ€œThen whereโ€™s your brother?โ€

Teresa shook her head. โ€œI have no idea. My mom canโ€™t get in touch with her cousin. She used to have an affair with my dad, and my mom caught them in the act. Ever since then, theyโ€™ve been enemies.โ€

Jonathan was speechless again.

Teresa knew Jonathan must think this whole family situation was a total messโ€”anyone would.

When she married him, sheโ€™d been upfront about her parentsโ€˜ divorce and that she was raised by her grandparents. Later, she found she had a sister, but it turned out not to be real, and now there might even be a brother out there.

โ€œI know my familyโ€™s a mess. But itโ€™s not something I could ever control or choose.โ€ Teresa looked up at Jonathan, her eyes pleading. โ€œCan you help me?โ€

Jonathan looked a little surprised, almost flattered. โ€œWhat do you want me to do?โ€

Teresa hesitated. โ€œPlease help me figure all this out. I want to find out who Jenniferโ€™s mother is, and whether I have a brother out there.โ€

โ€œNot helping,โ€ Jonathan said, turning away. But out of the corner of his eye, he was still watching her.

When he saw her stand up and sway a bit, he rushed over and steadied her by the shoulders. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

Teresa shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. I probably just got up too fast and felt a little dizzy.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re doing this on purpose,โ€ Jonathan muttered, helping her sit back down and pouring her a glass of warm water. He sounded exasperated as he added, โ€œYou know I canโ€™t win with you, especially when youโ€™re carrying my daughter.โ€
