Chapter 751

Donald stood by Jenniferโ€™s hospital bed, guilt flooding his heart as he saw how pale she looked. He held her hand tightly, hoping the baby she was carrying would be alright.

He thought, โ€˜If the babyโ€™s safe, Iโ€™ll apologizeโ€“hell, Iโ€™ll even beg Jonathan to cut Jennifer some slack and let her keep her medical license.โ€™

He was ready to resign for her. Sheโ€™d worked her ass off for this job. If she wasnโ€™t willing to quit, heโ€™d take all the heat and blame, just to keep her and the baby safe.

Just then, someone knocked on the door, pulling Donald out of his thoughts.

David walked in. He was Donaldโ€™s colleague and the doctor who had examined Jennifer.

Donald rushed over. โ€œDavid, howโ€™s Jennifer?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Jennifer hasnโ€™t eaten all day, and she didnโ€™t get much rest last night. She just passed out from exhaustion. She should wake up soon,โ€ David replied.

Donald patted his chest, finally relieved. โ€œThatโ€™s a relief. Howโ€™s the baby doing?โ€

โ€œJenniferโ€™s not pregnant,โ€ David replied.

The news hit Donald like a thunderclap. โ€œThat canโ€™t be, David! Are you sure you didnโ€™t make a mistake? Jenniferโ€™s two months pregnant.โ€

โ€œHow is that possible? Thereโ€™s nothing in Jenniferโ€™s bellyโ€”she was never pregnant to begin with,โ€ David said.

Donald still couldnโ€™t accept it. He muttered to himself, โ€œNo way. Thatโ€™s impossible. Jennifer told me she was pregnant, and she even showed me the medical report.โ€

He lost control for a moment and grabbed Davidโ€™s hand. โ€œYouโ€™ve been a doctor for years, and I know youโ€™re a good man. Just tell me the truthโ€“did Jennifer have a miscarriage because she was too stressed?โ€

โ€œCome on, Donald, why would I lie to you? Jennifer really isnโ€™t pregnant.โ€ David pulled his hand back. โ€œIf you donโ€™t believe me, just look at the report yourself.โ€

Donald snatched up the report and started going over it, line by line.

โ€œSeems like you and Jennifer had a misunderstanding. Talk it over when she wakes up,โ€ David sighed. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing else, so Iโ€™ll leave you two alone.โ€

Donald remained silent. He finished the report and sat there, frozen like an empty shell. Jenniferโ€™s not pregnant, he thought, his heart sinking all the way to rock bottom.

Time crawled. Finally, Jennifer opened her eyes, still groggy. When she saw Donald sitting beside her bed, her mind slowly cleared. She dimly remembered passing out from exhaustionโ€“sheโ€™d been busy and skipped meals to save a few bucks.

โ€œYouโ€™re awake,โ€ Donald said, his voice cold, with no hint of emotion.

Jennifer slowly sat up. When she saw the medical report in his hand, something clicked, and immediately, she snatched it away from him.

Her face turned deathly pale. He knows it, she thought, panic flooding her mind.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Donald suddenly turned to face her, his eyes filled with accusation and exhaustion. โ€œWhy did you lie to me again?โ€

Jenniferโ€™s shoulders trembled. She took a deep breath, tears welling up in her eyes. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Donald.โ€

โ€œSorry doesnโ€™t fix anything,โ€ Donald said. He grabbed her shoulders, and his voice broke with emotion. โ€œWhy did you lie about being pregnant? Why do you keep lying to me? What have I done to deserve this?โ€

โ€œI love you. I was just so afraid of losing you,โ€ Jennifer choked out.

Donald slowly let go of her.

Jennifer was falling apart. โ€œI was terrified youโ€™d divorce me, so I lied. I never meant to deceive you. Everything I did was because I love you. I love you, so I let Teresa keep Mike a secret. Losing my job didnโ€™t scare me as much as you finding out I faked the report. I was terrified youโ€™d be disappointed, that youโ€™d hate me, that youโ€™d stop loving me.

โ€œI just want to look good in your eyes, Donald. I care about you too much.โ€

Donaldโ€™s eyes were bloodshot with tears, and his gaze twisted into a mocking sneer. โ€œYou say you love me?โ€

Jennifer nodded with difficulty. She loved him, and she couldnโ€™t imagine her life without him.

Donald let out a cold, bitter laugh. โ€œSo loving me gives you the right to lie to me? You tell me youโ€™re pregnant, get my hopes up, and then smash them to pieces.

โ€œYour so-called love is nothing but hurting me, hurting my family, and even your own. Is this what love means to you, Jennifer?โ€

Jennifer had never seen Donald lose it like this. She took a shaky breath and reached for his hand.

Donald just impatiently pulled his hand awayโ€“he was repulsed by her touch.

Jennifer looked down. โ€œIโ€™m sorry for hurting you. I was wrong.โ€

Donald lost it again. โ€œNo, itโ€™s my fault. I shouldnโ€™t have married you. You know that? I had everything planned out. Since you care so much about your job, I was ready to beg Jonathan to keep you on. I was even gonna quit for you.

โ€œDo you know how many times Iโ€™ve begged Jonathan for your sake? When that patient made a scene after your surgery mess, I went to him, begging for help. I swallowed my prideโ€“threw away every bit of my dignity as a manโ€“all for you.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Jennifer cried, her voice breaking, โ€œDonald, please, just give me one more chance.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve given you more chances than you deserve, and this is how you treat me? Jennifer, go hand in your resignation yourself. You donโ€™t belong here anymore.โ€ With that, Donald slammed the door behind him and stormed out.

โ€œDonald!โ€ Jennifer threw off the covers, jumped out of bed, and rushed after him. But all she saw was his fading back and the blur of doctors and nurses.

She dropped to the floor by the door, barefoot, covering her mouth as she sobbed in agony. Iโ€™ve lost my career, and now Iโ€™ve lost my love. Why did it all come to this? she thought, her heart shattering.

Suddenly, a handkerchief was held out in front of her. She looked up, her heart racing with hope. โ€œDonald!โ€

But the person standing in front of her wasnโ€™t Donald.
