Chapter 767
The next second, Jonathan crouched on the floor, both hands on Teresaโs lower back, and pressed his head to her belly. โIโve never heard the babyโs heartbeat,โ he said. โLet me listen.โ
Teresa didnโt answer. From her angle, she could see the straight bridge of his nose. She swallowed, not sure why her pulse quickened; sheโd seen his face plenty.
โYou done staring? The babyโs trying to sleep,โ she said.
Jonathan lifted his head and locked his deep eyes on her. โWhy do I hear loud thumps?โ
Teresaโs gaze flicked away. โReally? I donโt hear anything.โ
Jonathan leaned in toward her chest. They were almost touching. Teresa shoved him back just in time.
โGo to your room and sleep,โ she said. โIโm turning in too.โ
Then Jonathanโs face came down toward hers. Teresa caught the scent of his shower gel. She looked aside. โWe canโt do that stuff anymore. Iโm pregnant.โ
Jonathan brushed her cheek with his long fingers. โJust fixing the lotion you missed. What were you thinking?โ
Teresa flushed. โIโve got it.โ She reached up and accidentally grabbed his fingers.
Jonathanโs eyes snapped to hers. She tried to pull away, but he held on.
They were inches apart. The next moment, he kissed her.
The soft smack echoed in the room. Teresa felt his hand slide up her pajamas to her chest, jolted awake, and pushed him off just before he tipped her back.
โTalking about the past got me carried away. Sorry,โ Jonathan muttered, straightening his shirt. He walked out of Teresaโs room.
Watching his back disappear, Teresa felt her heart still racing. She was glad sheโd stopped herself.
The next afternoon, Jennifer showed up at the Lynn residence without warning. Werner opened the door.
โDonald, Jenniferโs here to see you.โ Werner looked into the house.
Donald hadnโt expected her to come. He planned to step outside and talk with her.
Jennifer carried a food box and said in a pleasing way, โI made a few dishes you like. You can eat them with your dad.โ
Donald turned his face away. โDonโt come again. I still havenโt told my dad and the others about our divorce. Wait till we finish the paperwork.โ
Jennifer felt another stab in her chest. โWhy? Are you afraid theyโll talk you out of it?โ
Since she was little, she had always been alone, without a single friend. Later, Gary treated her well, and then she became Teresaโs sister and married Donald. She thought she finally had a family.
Scenes from the past flashed in her mindโGaryโs harsh words, Teresaโs disappointment, and Donaldโs accusations. Everyone around her was leaving. Once again, she was alone, unloved.
She even felt like being alive was a mistake.
Then, a loud honk sounded behind her. Jennifer snapped out of it and saw a motorcycle speeding toward her. But her body felt frozen. She couldnโt move.
The next second, she heard a familiar voice shout, โJennifer!โ
Then Jennifer fell hard and felt sharp pain. Her arm scraped against the ground.
Holding her aching arm, Jennifer looked up and saw Evelyn standing in front of her.
โHow did youโฆโ She froze for a moment, then noticed the blood running from Evelynโs knee, worse than her own injury.
Evelyn struggled to stand. โTeresa called me. She said thereโs news about my cousin. I was on my way to find her and saw you wandering into the street like that. What were you thinking? Didnโt you see the light was red?โ
Jennifer helped support Evelyn and frowned. โI didnโt ask you to save me.โ
For a moment, she had truly wanted to die. Life felt meaningless. But she never expected Evelynโone of the people she hated mostโto be the one to save her at the last second.
Jennifer couldnโt understand why Evelyn, who wasnโt even her real mother, would save her.
