Chapter 767

The next second, Jonathan crouched on the floor, both hands on Teresaโ€™s lower back, and pressed his head to her belly. โ€œIโ€™ve never heard the babyโ€™s heartbeat,โ€ he said. โ€œLet me listen.โ€

Teresa didnโ€™t answer. From her angle, she could see the straight bridge of his nose. She swallowed, not sure why her pulse quickened; sheโ€™d seen his face plenty.

โ€œYou done staring? The babyโ€™s trying to sleep,โ€ she said.

Jonathan lifted his head and locked his deep eyes on her. โ€œWhy do I hear loud thumps?โ€

Teresaโ€™s gaze flicked away. โ€œReally? I donโ€™t hear anything.โ€

Jonathan leaned in toward her chest. They were almost touching. Teresa shoved him back just in time.

โ€œGo to your room and sleep,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™m turning in too.โ€

Then Jonathanโ€™s face came down toward hers. Teresa caught the scent of his shower gel. She looked aside. โ€œWe canโ€™t do that stuff anymore. Iโ€™m pregnant.โ€

Jonathan brushed her cheek with his long fingers. โ€œJust fixing the lotion you missed. What were you thinking?โ€

Teresa flushed. โ€œIโ€™ve got it.โ€ She reached up and accidentally grabbed his fingers.

Jonathanโ€™s eyes snapped to hers. She tried to pull away, but he held on.

They were inches apart. The next moment, he kissed her.

The soft smack echoed in the room. Teresa felt his hand slide up her pajamas to her chest, jolted awake, and pushed him off just before he tipped her back.

โ€œTalking about the past got me carried away. Sorry,โ€ Jonathan muttered, straightening his shirt. He walked out of Teresaโ€™s room.

Watching his back disappear, Teresa felt her heart still racing. She was glad sheโ€™d stopped herself.

The next afternoon, Jennifer showed up at the Lynn residence without warning. Werner opened the door.

โ€œDonald, Jenniferโ€™s here to see you.โ€ Werner looked into the house.

Donald hadnโ€™t expected her to come. He planned to step outside and talk with her.

Jennifer carried a food box and said in a pleasing way, โ€œI made a few dishes you like. You can eat them with your dad.โ€

Donald turned his face away. โ€œDonโ€™t come again. I still havenโ€™t told my dad and the others about our divorce. Wait till we finish the paperwork.โ€

Jennifer felt another stab in her chest. โ€œWhy? Are you afraid theyโ€™ll talk you out of it?โ€

Since she was little, she had always been alone, without a single friend. Later, Gary treated her well, and then she became Teresaโ€™s sister and married Donald. She thought she finally had a family.

Scenes from the past flashed in her mindโ€“Garyโ€™s harsh words, Teresaโ€™s disappointment, and Donaldโ€™s accusations. Everyone around her was leaving. Once again, she was alone, unloved.

She even felt like being alive was a mistake.

Then, a loud honk sounded behind her. Jennifer snapped out of it and saw a motorcycle speeding toward her. But her body felt frozen. She couldnโ€™t move.

The next second, she heard a familiar voice shout, โ€œJennifer!โ€

Then Jennifer fell hard and felt sharp pain. Her arm scraped against the ground.

Holding her aching arm, Jennifer looked up and saw Evelyn standing in front of her.

โ€œHow did youโ€ฆโ€ She froze for a moment, then noticed the blood running from Evelynโ€™s knee, worse than her own injury.

Evelyn struggled to stand. โ€œTeresa called me. She said thereโ€™s news about my cousin. I was on my way to find her and saw you wandering into the street like that. What were you thinking? Didnโ€™t you see the light was red?โ€

Jennifer helped support Evelyn and frowned. โ€œI didnโ€™t ask you to save me.โ€

For a moment, she had truly wanted to die. Life felt meaningless. But she never expected Evelynโ€“one of the people she hated mostโ€“to be the one to save her at the last second.

Jennifer couldnโ€™t understand why Evelyn, who wasnโ€™t even her real mother, would save her.
