Chapter 773
Lucas looked determined. He agreed to do a DNA test. All these years, he had wondered if Peggy was his mother or not.
A mother usually loved her child, but he had never felt that love. He grew up in a suffocating environment that he couldnโt avoid.
If the test proved Peggy wasnโt his blood, he would be free from these โfakeโ blood chains.
โI gave birth to Lucas, and he is my son. Iโm sure about that. I wonโt do a DNA test,โ said Peggy.
โJust have Lucas and Evelyn do it. If sheโs not his mother, the truth wins,โ said Jonathan.
Peggy choked on silence. Jonathan turned to look at Lucas and asked, โWhat do you think? Is that okay for you?โ
Lucas agreed and asked, โMr. Lynn, can my hair be the sample?โ
โOf course,โ Jonathan replied.
Lucas yanked out a few strands of his hair and handed them to Jonathan. Evelyn did the same to herself and gave her hair to Jonathan.
Jonathan made a call, and his bodyguard came over. He handed the samples to him and instructed, โFind a reputable DNA testing center nearby to get the result urgently.โ
โYes, Mr. Lynn,โ said the bodyguard.
Peggy looked very angry. These people all wanted to take her son away, especially Evelyn.
Ever since she was a child, all her relatives had compared her to Evelyn. They always said she wasnโt as good as her. Now, Evelyn even wanted to snatch Lucas away.
โSo will she give that worthless daughter back to me? On what grounds? Why is my child still inferior to hers?โ Peggy thought.
โEvelyn, listen. Lucas is my son. Donโt you dare think about taking him from me,โ Peggy said. Then she turned and walked away.
Lucasโs fingers were trembling. Teresa noticed and asked him, โAre you okay?โ
โDonโt worry. Itโs just my anxiety disorder acting up again,โ Lucas said casually.
Teresa was a little shocked. โHow does someone so warm carry this? His hand even trembled uncontrollably,โ she wondered.
Lucas smiled faintly. โItโs okay. Iโm used to it. Donโt worry about me,โ he said.
He tried to steady it, and Evelynโs hand closed over his shaking one gently.
โOnce the DNA test result is out and shows you are my son, Iโll spend years making amends. This failure is mine. Iโm so sorry,โ Evelyn said.
Lucas couldnโt hold back his tears. Evelyn held his hand steadily and gently. Then Lucasโs hand stopped trembling gradually.
As he met her gaze, Lucas managed to stay calm. โEvelyn, letโs wait for the results first,โ he said.
He hesitated. If the results indicated that he was not Evelynโs son, his hope would turn into disappointment.
Heโd already faced too many disappointments. He didnโt want to hurt Evelyn or Teresa.
Jonathan and Lucas exchanged phone numbers. Once the results were out, Jonathan promised heโd let Lucas know right away.
โThank you, Mr. Lynn,โ Lucas said.
โMy pleasure. Youโre my friend,โ Jonathan replied.
Lucas smiled lightly and didnโt say anything else. They just had to wait for the results and then meet each other again.
Teresa and Evelyn got into the car. Evelyn leaned against Teresaโs shoulder and wiped away her tears, completely falling apart.
Evelyn said, โIf heโs my son, it hurt me to see him having suffered so much. How did he end up like this?
โI always thought Peggy would only maltreat me, but I never imagined sheโd be so cruel to Lucas, too. Just look at how scared he is.โ
The more she thought about it, the worse she felt. She always had a soft heart beneath her bright surface. Teresa knew this truthโit was why life kept wounding Evelyn.
โEverything will be fine. If he is my brother, weโll bring him home to Nareigh. You and Isabel can come back too. We could be neighbors,โ Teresa said.
Evelyn shook her head. She looked at Teresa, her eyes tinged with guilt and self-blame. โTeresa, Iโm sorry too. As your mom, I shouldnโt burden my pregnant daughter with this. Itโs been hard for you.โ
โJonathan, thank you too,โ Evelyn added.
โAnd Hannahโฆ Sheโs such a poor girl. Peggy is awful. Iโm just naive. She never changed. She still values sons over daughters. That poison never left her,โ Evelyn said.
โHas this kind of thing happened before?โ Teresa asked.
Evelyn explained, โActually, Peggy aborted a daughter at a back-alley clinic years ago. She said she didnโt want girls.โ
When Peggy got pregnant again, it was too late to abort safely. The doctor told her that if she had the abortion this time, she might never be able to have kids again.
โShe got pregnant a week after I did. It was a coincidence that we had the same delivery day,โ Evelyn said.
Teresa suddenly realized something. โMaybe she gave birth on the same day as you on purpose. She probably already knew she was having a girl and couldnโt abort the baby. So she was jealous of you, and then swapped your babies,โ Teresa said.
Swapping babies was no small thing. There was no way something like that just happened suddenly. This could only mean that Peggy had been scheming for a long time.
Jonathan sat in the front passenger seat, glancing at Teresa. He agreed with Teresa.
Evelyn said, โBut I never learned the babyโs gender. So how did she know I was having a boy?โ
Teresa replied, โYouโll have to ask her about it yourself.โ
Instead of dropping Evelyn off at a hotel, Jonathan suggested that she stay at his place. Evelyn felt it wasnโt good to say no, so she agreed.
The Maybach car drove into the residential complex. Evelyn was surprised to see Jonathanโs courtyard house.
As she looked around at the stunning, grandly decorated courtyard house, she couldnโt help but admire him.
โJonathan, this house mustโve cost a fortune, right? Real estate in Jarisburg is very expensive, and this place is near the city center. How much did it cost?โ Evelyn asked.
โNot much. Have a rest,โ Jonathan replied and offered her a glass of water.
โNo way. This city-center palace mustโve bled you dry,โ said Evelyn.
Teresa told Evelyn the truth. It cost 500 million.
Evelyn was extremely shocked. โ500 million?โ she marveled.
Back then, when Jonathan married Teresa, he barely had any money. Evelyn had thought Teresa was making a bad choice, so she didnโt even go to their wedding.
Thinking about all this, Evelyn felt very guilty. โJonathan, even though you and Teresa are divorced now, I still need to apologize. Back then, I misjudged you. I didnโt know what a good man you were,โ Evelyn said.
โAnd I even looked down on you for not having money and worried that you lacked ambition. Iโm sorry,โ Evelyn added.
โEvelyn, it was all in the past. I didnโt take it to heart,โ Jonathan replied calmly.
Now that heโd made it this far, most things didnโt bother him anymore. Only matters of Teresa could affect her mood; other peopleโs opinions couldnโt.
