Chapter 784

Evelyn sagged further, nodding between ragged sobs. โ€œShe knows.โ€

Teresa frowned. โ€œHow? Who told her?โ€ She hadnโ€™t even decided how to tell Jennifer yet.

Evelyn choked out, โ€œThe police summoned Jennifer. Theyโ€™ve already taken DNA samples from her and Peggy. If it proves sheโ€™s Peggyโ€™s daughter,โ€ Evelyn gasped, โ€œitโ€™ll seal Peggyโ€™s guilt โ€“ abandonment and baby-swapping.โ€

Teresa inhaled sharply. โ€œJennifer? She agreed to the test?โ€

โ€œYes, she did,โ€ Evelyn confirmed.

โ€œHow could she agree with it?โ€ asked Teresa.

Evelyn recounted Jenniferโ€™s collapse, the venom Peggy had spat โ€“ every hateful syllable.

โ€œShe took the test and left for Nareigh. She must be shattered.โ€ Evelyn dissolved into tears again. โ€œIโ€™m terrified, Teresa! Terrified sheโ€™ll do something drastic. Sheโ€™s always been so extreme.โ€

โ€œOh, how I wish she were mine by blood! But even if she isnโ€™t, in here?โ€ Evelyn pressed a hand to her heart. โ€œShe is my daughter. My Hannah.โ€

Teresa froze, dread coiling cold in her stomach. Jennifer had told Teresa more than once that she didnโ€™t want to live anymore. What ifโ€ฆ? The unspoken question hung between them, terrifyingly real.

โ€œI need to make a call,โ€ Teresa blurted, turning to leave, and bumped straight into Jonathan outside the door.

Jonathan steadied her, his hands firm on her shoulders, his gaze instantly sharpening at her pallor. โ€œWhere are you going?โ€

โ€œJonathan!โ€ Relief washed over her. She gripped his arm like an anchor. โ€œCall Donald. Now. Tell him to find Jennifer. Sheโ€™s back in Nareigh. Iโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know her state of mind. Iโ€™m scared she mightโ€ฆโ€ Teresa couldnโ€™t finish, the image of Lucas too fresh.

Jonathanโ€™s hand closed firmer around her wrist. His expression was grim. โ€œTeresa, she cut you out. Why does her well-being still matter to you? She dug this hole herself.โ€

โ€œI know!โ€ Teresaโ€™s voice cracked with frustration. โ€œBut sheโ€™s no murderer. Does she deserve to die for this? Look at Lucas. If Jennifer alsoโ€ฆโ€ She choked, the thought unbearable. โ€œWhat about Mom? How could she survive that? I justโ€ฆ I want my family whole.โ€

Jonathan studied her face, the pain in his eyes deepening. โ€œYou still see her as your sister,โ€ he murmured, a statement, not a question.

A weary resignation settled over him. โ€œAlright. Iโ€™ll call him. But please, no more tears.โ€ Heโ€™d move mountains to shield her, to keep her world intact. Her pain was his own.

Teresa took a shaky breath, finding a sliver of calm. โ€œI justโ€ฆ I need her to be alive.โ€ The past was a minefield of hurts. Closeness with Jennifer was impossible. That was their reality. But she still hoped that Jennifer would live well.

Jennifer spent the endless night in Jarisburg Airportโ€™s harsh fluorescent glow. Having missed her flight, sheโ€™d rebooked for the morning. Sleep was impossible. She sat frozen in a chair, hours bleeding into one another in a numb haze.

The glittering city outside โ€“ a beacon for millions โ€“ felt like a prison she desperately needed to escape.

Boarding felt like moving through thick fog. Staff guided her numb form onto the plane. The flight passed in a blur of engine hum and sterile light. She blinked, and the familiar landscape of Nareigh unfolded below.

Chapter 784

Home. The word echoed hollowly in her mind. Nareigh Airport teemed with life โ€“ reunions, greetings, bustling purpose โ€“ yet she stood utterly alone. No welcoming face. The morning sun felt cold. The loneliness was a physical ache, a vast emptiness echoing around her.

Mechanically, she pulled out her phone. Her thumb hovered over Donaldโ€™s name. She hesitated, debating whether or not to call him. Then โ€“ a vibration. His name flashed on the screen. It felt like fate had read her mind.

โ€œDonald?โ€ Her voice was small, tentative, disbelief warring with desperate hope.

There was a beat of silence. Then he asked, his voice familiar yet strained, โ€œAre you alright?โ€

Hearing him shattered her fragile composure. Tears spilled over instantly. โ€˜No. Iโ€™m breaking. Help me!โ€™ The words burned her tongue. But the chasm between them โ€“ they were already in the cooling-off period โ€“ stopped her.

No more confessions. No more leaning on him. She forced the lie out, layering calm over the chaos within. โ€œIโ€™m okay. Why did you call me suddenly?โ€ she asked quietly, trying to sound casual.

โ€œIt was Teresa and Jonathan. They said you might not be doing well and asked me to keep you company.โ€

Fresh tears scalded her cheeks. โ€˜Teresa, Iโ€™ve treated you so badly. Why do you even bother caring about me?โ€™ she thought. A wave of self-loathing crashed over her.

Sheโ€™d pushed away everyone who ever cared โ€“ family, Donald. The weight of her past actions was crushing. But she understood it too late. Far too late.

Jennifer clutched the shreds of her pride. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Just a trip to Jarisburg. Alone.โ€ Her voice hitched. โ€œIโ€™m tired. Iโ€ฆโ€

The unspoken confession that she missed him lodged like a stone in her throat. She missed him so much, but she didnโ€™t have the right to say it anymore.

The silence stretched. Donald finally broke it. โ€œYour mother, did you find her?โ€

Jennifer swallowed hard against the lump in her throat, forcing detachment into her voice. โ€œNo. I didnโ€™t find her. It doesnโ€™t matter anymore. I donโ€™t care.โ€

โ€œHow can you not care?โ€ Donald sounded genuinely perplexed. โ€œSheโ€™s your blood. Wasnโ€™t finding her all you wanted?โ€

โ€œSome things arenโ€™t worth holding onto.โ€ She couldnโ€™t bear Donald knowing the depth of her motherโ€™s shame. Or perhaps, she still had a flicker of hope. โ€˜Maybe itโ€™s a mistake. Maybe itโ€™s not her. Maybe someone else?โ€™

Donald sighed softly. โ€œAlright. Just take it slow.โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€ Her voice was barely audible. โ€œI will.โ€

Another pause, heavier this time. โ€œWell, if youโ€™re okay, I should hang up.โ€ His voice was gentle but final. โ€œWeโ€™re notโ€ฆ in that place anymore.โ€

โ€œOkay. I understand.โ€ She ended the call before he could hear her break. Then, her legs gave way. She sank to the cold floor, face buried, shoulders shaking with silent, racking sobs. โ€˜Heโ€™s gone. My Donald, gone.โ€™

All that remained was the hollow wait for the divorce papers โ€“ the official end of her right to even exist in his world.

The phone buzzed again, sharp and insistent against the silence. A Jarisburg number. Dread pooled in Jenniferโ€™s stomach. Hand trembling, she swiped to answer. โ€œHโ€“hello? Jennifer Nelson speaking.โ€ Her voice wavered.

โ€œMs. Nelson. This is regarding the DNA test between you and Peggy Davis.
