Chapter 914
Teresa couldnโt just sit back and do nothing. โIs he not coming back today? How long is the interrogation going to take?โ
Benny glanced at his watch. It was already six in the evening. โTheyโre still questioning a few higher-ups from Jonathanโs company. Itโll probably go on until tomorrow. If things go smoothly, he could be released then.โ
He didnโt say anything about what might happen if things went south. Teresa had never felt time drag on so painfully. She asked Benny if she could take the blame for Jonathan herself.
Benny looked puzzled. โWhat do you mean? I donโt really get it.โ
Teresa knew pregnant women usually avoid jail. She thought she could say she didnโt understand commercial operations and used Jonathanโs computer for improper actions, claiming Jonathan was unaware and she was taking the blame for him.
โWould that work? If they investigate me, Jonathan could get off the hook,โ she said.
Benny suddenly chuckled, rubbing his chin. โHonestly, thatโs a pretty solid plan. Beauty saves the hero. If Jonathan heard you say that, heโd probably be touched to death.โ
Teresa nodded. โThen take me to the police station.โ
If it meant Jonathan could be safe, she didnโt care about the company. She could take the fall for him. She was dead serious.
Benny let out a helpless sigh. โI was just kidding. Relax, things arenโt nearly as bad as you think. If Jonathan really needed to hide behind you to fix his problems, he might as well give up being the CEO of Horizonlead Group.โ
But there was no way Teresa could just stand by and watch. She was determined to do whatever she could. She still wanted to give her plan a shot.
Bennyโs phone rang. โAlright, I understand.โ
He turned to Teresa. โIโm heading over to Jonathanโs company now. Iโll let you know if anything comes up. Seriously, donโt stress. Make sure you eat and get some rest, alright?โ Benny left.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Donald had planned to plead with Irene, but by the time he got there, she was already gone.
Jennifer was being held in custody, not just waiting in the lobby like last time. It took a lot of pulling strings, but Donald finally managed to see her.
Jennifer kept her head down, not looking at Donald. Her face was expressionless as she said, โOur divorce papers will be ready this week. You can pick them up and give one to me. From then on, we never have to see each other again.โ
โJennifer, how am I supposed to go through with the divorce when youโre like this?โ Donald said, his voice tight with emotion.
Her eyes suddenly turned red. Tears burned at the corners of her eyes. โI brought this on myself. I deserve to pay for my mistakes. I canโt just pretend nothing ever happened. Iโve come to terms with it now,โ she said.
She said, โWe still have to get divorced, no matter what. If you secretly try to withdraw the divorce application behind my back, I wonโt agree to it. I hope youโll respect my wishes.โ
โThatโs not important right now. I wonโt let anything happen to you,โ Donald said, tears sliding down his cheeks. โIโm going to find Irene.โ
โDonald, come back,โ Jennifer shouted.
Seeing him turn to leave, she yelled, โIf you go begging that old witch again, Iโll hate you for the rest of my life. Donโt take away the last shred of dignity I have left.โ
Donald stopped abruptly. โWhat do you want me to do? Are you going to jail? You could get three years. At thirty, how will you manage after jail? I canโt just watch this happen.โ
โDamn it, Iโm so useless. I canโt do a thing to help her,โ he thought. Donald clenched his fists, hating himself in that moment.
Jennifer gave a faint, bitter smile. โDonald, thank you. I lost our baby. I donโt deserve you treating me so well. Letโs just leave it at that.โ
The miscarried child was always a thorn in Donaldโs heart, causing him immense pain. But he couldnโt bear to watch Jennifer be sentenced and sent to jail.
โDonโt worry, Iโll go talk to Irene myself. Iโll tell her it was all my doing, that I pushed you into it. Itโs all on me. If someone has to go to jail, let it be me instead of you,โ he said, his voice resolute.
โDonald,โ Jennifer called after him, but he was already gone.
Werner had also seen the news. Luckily, he caught it before Hayden did, and to avoid upsetting the old man, he made sure Hayden didnโt touch his phone at all that day.
Werner tried to get in touch with Donald first, but when he couldnโt reach him, he ended up calling Gary. โGary, whatโs going on with Jonathan? I havenโt dared let your grandfather know anything yet,โ Werner said.
โItโs nothing. Just leave it alone,โ Gary replied coolly. Heโd never had much to say to this so-called father of his, and barely kept in contact.
Heโd been tailing Irene, but while he was distracted on the phone, she took the chance to drive off. Luckily, Gary was quick on the uptake. He made a beeline for the Department of Justice, and sure enough, thatโs where he found her.
Irene was desperate to see Jonathan, loudly insisting to the staff that there was no way Jonathan would ever do something like that. If there was any crime, someone must have put him up to it.
โCan you not lose it here?โ Gary cut in, dragging Irene away.
โJonathan hasnโt even been convicted yet, and youโre already talking about him being set up. Irene, are you even thinking straight? If youโre sick, letโs just go home, okay? Donโt embarrass yourself here,โ he said.
But Irene refused to budge. Gary put his hands on his hips. โAlright then, Iโll just say it right here. Hey, everyone, look over here."
He clapped his hands. As people around them turned to look, Gary said, โListen up, everyone, Iโve got something to announce. This lady right here next to meโโ
Before he could finish, Irene stomped hard on his foot. โIf you dare pull this on me, Iโll make sure everyone knows your mom was the other woman,โ she hissed.
โGo ahead, try me. Letโs see whoโs more ruthless,โ Gary said with a smile on his lips, but there was no trace of warmth in his eyes.
Everyone had their limits. Everyone had wounds they couldnโt bear to touch. Whether it was Irene and Gary, even though it had been proven that Gary was not Yorickโs son, the two were destined to be at odds forever because of their past grievances.
Just as the two of them were locked in a standoff, Donald showed up. He didnโt waste a second, rushing straight to Irene. He begged her to drop the lawsuit against Jennifer.
โAunt Irene, didnโt we already move past the whole DNA test thing? Fine, if you really have to go after someone, then hereโs the truth. It was all me. I put Jennifer up to it. If you want to sue someone, sue me,โ he said.
โCan you stop making things worse? Just calm down.โ Gary tried to reason with Donald, but Donald shoved him away impatiently.
โSanford, this is the Lynn familyโs business. Stay out of it,โ Donald snapped. Gary finally lost it.
