Chapter 944

“What?” Gary looked over at Jonathan. “Jonathan, don’t do anything rash. This is all my fault. If you need to take it out on someone, take it out on me. You fought so hard to build everything you have. If you end up in prison for killing someone, everything will be destroyed.”

Benny cut Gary off. “Don’t bother talking to him about his business. He’s not listening to any of that right now. Just tell him about Teresa. She’s about to wake up. Make him think about his wife and kid. That’s all he cares about now.”

Last year, on Benny’s birthday, Jonathan had just come back to Nareigh and immediately asked Benny to use the occasion to set up a meeting with Teresa. That was when Benny realized that Jonathan was a total love-brain.

Gary pressed his lips together, and then suddenly turned and started walking away.

“Where are you going?” asked Benny.

“I’m going to get Mike right now,” Gary said, sounding urgent.

“Hold on a second,” Benny grabbed Gary’s arm. “Teresa’s still not awake, and Jonathan’s got this crazy, murderous vibe right now. Do you really want to scare the crap out of Mike?”

Gary thought for a moment, and then stopped in his tracks. He turned to the cold, stoic man, his tone tinged with anger.

“Jonathan, think about Mike. It took so much for him to finally accept you as his dad. Are you really going to make him lose his father now? Doesn’t your heart ache for him?”

Jonathan stayed silent, still holding tightly to Teresa’s hand. There was a clear flicker in his eyes.

Gary kept his gaze on Jonathan. “Then I won’t bring Mike over. I’ll look after him, but you need to take care of yourself, too. Don't scare the kid.” With that, Gary walked out with Benny right behind him and closed the door.

“I just had to give him a wake-up call. He’s a dad now. He can’t just act on impulse, or think about what it would do to his kid,” Gary said. Gary knew all too well what it was like to grow up without a father.

If Jonathan really lost control and killed someone today, the ones who’d suffer most, besides Teresa, would be Michael.

Benny nodded. “Yeah, that’s the right way to get through to him. I think he’ll calm down now.” His phone started ringing.

It was a call from Nareigh. “Hello?” he picked up. “Really?” Benny’s brows finally eased a bit. “That’s awesome. Got it.”

The call was a godsend. There was finally some new development about Lucas. Lucas had been held in a hidden café, and the police had already found him and gotten him out safely.

The guys who beat him up have also been caught. They were being interrogated right now. Meanwhile, Lucas was getting checked over for injuries.

The good news was that Lucas was actually doing pretty well, just some scrapes and bruises, and the doctors said that there was nothing serious after a quick check.

“That’s great news,” Benny said. He wasted no time and told Jonathan the good news right away. Turned out Yalena hadn’t gone completely off the deep end, at least not yet.

But Jonathan frowned. He didn’t expect Yalena to go easy on Lucas. He wasn’t buying it. He just had this feeling that there was something else going on.

Benny said, “We’ll have to wait for the full report on his injuries. They’ll let us know more details later. But here’s a picture of him right after he was rescued.” He showed Jonathan the photo on his phone.

Lucas had a few bruises, his forehead was bleeding, and he was walking with a noticeable limp. But overall, it didn’t look too serious.
