Eason couldnโt figure out how the kind, cheerful girl he once knew had become like this. He wanted to visit Teresa and the premature baby, hoping to apologize in person on behalf of Yalena.
But it was impossible. Not only was he unable to see them, but he couldnโt even get his hands on a recent photo of Teresa.
The private maternity center where Teresa was staying was under tight security. Even doctors had to swipe their cards and show ID just to get in, so there was no way any outsiders could visit.
Suddenly, his phone rang. Eason picked it up.
Katrina was crying on the other end. โYalenaโs injuries are really bad. She needs to stay home and rest for a whole month. But the police keep calling her in for questioning. What are we supposed to do?โ
โKatrina, donโt worry. Yalena isnโt going to jail. I already talked to the guy. He only suffered a minor injury, nothing serious. Iโve got everything under control,โ Eason reassured her.
โThatโs good, but Yalenaโs hurt. Are you really just going to let Jonathan off the hook like that?โ Katrina pressed.
Eason went quiet. โKatrina, didnโt you once say that Yalena might not be our daughter?โ he said.
โWhat are you talking about?โ Katrina asked, confused.
โI feel the same way. Yalenaโs changed so much. Itโs like sheโs become heartless, like she doesnโt even have a conscience anymore. What if sheโs not really our daughter?โ Eason said.
โIf sheโs not our daughter, then whose child could she be? Iโve only ever been with you, thereโs no one else!โ Katrina exclaimed, panic rising in her voice.
โThatโs not what I mean. Of course, I trust you. What Iโm saying is, what if sheโs not really Yalena? What if sheโs someone else?โ Eason clarified.
โIs that even possible? She looks exactly like Yalena. If sheโs not Yalena, then who could she be?โ Katrina asked.
That was exactly what Eason couldnโt figure out. After being saved from the kidnappers, Yalena became vicious. Even some of her habits changed.
At first, Eason thought maybe Yalena just wasnโt herself after everything, or that she needed some time to get back to normal after the shock. But the things Yalena had done were just downright scary.
No matter how much a person changed, their true nature shouldnโt just turn into something completely different. Before, when Yalena was targeting Jonathan and Teresa, Eason could still justify her actions.
But now, even knowing Teresa was about to give birth, Yalena still went all the way to Jarisburg, and deliberately stressed her out, just to trigger a premature labor. That was completely out of character for the Yalena he used to know.
โThatโs why I think she might not really be our daughter. Katrina, when I get back, I want to have a DNA test done with Yalena to find out,โ Eason said.
Katrina suddenly went silent.
โKatrina? Katrina?โ Eason called her name several times.
โOh, I just felt a little dizzy for a second,โ Katrina said. โHonestly, Iโve wondered the same thing. I donโt know why sheโs changed so much. Maybe I should be the one to do the DNA test with her.โ
โDoes it really matter which one of us does it? Anyway, I need to talk to Yalena myself,โ Eason replied. With that, Eason hung up and made his way to the hospital.
At the hospital, Yalena lay in bed, her arms and legs swathed in bandages. When she was first brought in, shards of glass were lodged in her flesh.
The doctors had to use tweezers to pull each piece out, one by one, and the pain was so intense that Yalena gritted her teeth in agony, her face twisted in pain.
