Chapter 100: Are You Dead?
Fred still thought Claire was in the hospital and hadn't been discharged yet. He couldn't believe she'd gone to stay in a rough neighborhood. He thought, โFirst, she pulls that lake stunt and badmouths Caroline to get my attention. Now, since that didnโt work, sheโs hiding out in some sketchy area by herself. Claire, youโre just trying to make me care, arenโt you? Not going to happen!โ
โDonโt worry about her for now. Just keep an eye on her. She will come back in a few days.โ Frederick narrowed his eyes slightly and hung up the phone.
โYes, General Hawthorne,โ Richard said, nodding respectfully after hearing Frederickโs order.
After hanging up, he sent someone to watch Claire and told Nora, โShe is very important to us. However, we cannot alert her. Letโs see what she wants to do.โ
A few days ago, the Kingstown Security Department had received news that a terrorist had infiltrated the Kingstown slum and intended to create a major riot. There were many people there, and the terrain was complex. Once something happened, it would be out of control.
โOkay, sir. Donโt worry. I will do as you say.โ
Nora didnโt know what had happened. But when she heard Richardโs words, she patted her chest proudly.
โWell, to prevent her from getting suspicious, you should go back now.โ Richard felt a little annoyed by Noraโs demeanor, so he urged her to leave. Then, he had been leading people to look for that terrorist.
Claire relaxed her vigilance, no longer worried about Richard bringing soldiers to the slum. However, Nora became more outrageous. Maybe it was because of Richardโs order. Nora felt she had a backer, so she started to bully Claire. Every day, when she woke up, she would ask Claire to do many things.
Claire was tired. But she chatted with the people in the rental house and learned that every newcomer had to work for Nora. So she no longer had any doubts. Every day, the first thing she did when she woke up was to clean the yard. Then, she started cleaning the rental house and even the toilet. Nora kept ordering Claire around.
Three days later, Frederick finished handling the riot case. Richard found the terrorist in the slum. Then, Frederick remembered that Claire was still there.
โHow is Claire doing in the slum these days?โ Frederick asked Richard after the morning meeting.
โGeneral Hawthorne, since Ms. Prescott moved into the slum, she has been working nonstop for Nora without complaint, from morning till night every day.โ Richard told Frederick everything that had happened in the past few days, including Claireโs humble life in the slum.
โWhat?โ Frederick couldnโt believe that Claire would be like this. With that, he immediately ordered Richard to go to the slum.
After being arrogant for a few days, Nora became even more aggressive. โI didnโt make things difficult for you because youโre a young lady. Do you know that those people served me on their knees before?โ
When Frederick arrived, Nora was teaching Claire a lesson with a cane. โDo you still not know what to do? Or do you want to be caned?โ Nora was a slum landlord, but she had lived there all her life and had never had a good life, let alone being served by others. She felt that Claire was easy to bully and wanted to experience the feeling of being a wealthy lady served by others, through Claire. The cane in Noraโs hand was about to fall on Claire.
โClaire, are you dead? Donโt you know how to fight back?โ With that, Frederick rushed over in a flash.
