Chapter 20: You Lied!
โOpen the door!โ Caroline ordered someone to open the door.
โClaire, whoโre you trying to kid? No way! You killed my sister, the girl Fred loved most. How could he let you stay at Halfmoon Manor? Youโre full of it!โ
Carolineโs face went red with anger as she stomped over and put her foot on Claire, pushing her down. โIf you keep talking crap, Iโll have someone rip your mouth apart right now!โ
โHaโฆ Iโm not lyingโฆ Fred made me stay. It wasโฆ to keep you safe!โ
Claire, pinned down, gave a sad smile through the pain, almost shaking. She really didnโt want to say those words again, because it hurt so bad. It felt like being stabbed over and over by the person she loved most. But she had no choice. If she didnโt say it, Caroline would beat her to death.
โKeep me safe? From what?โ
Chapter 20: You Lied!
Hearing that, Caroline was shocked and didnโt believe it. Without thinking, she eased up on Claireโs foot a bit.
โYesโฆ Frederick wants me to shield you. Itโs been dangerous around him all these yearsโฆ youโve been by his side these past few years, and now that heโs a supreme commanderโฆ running for president, it will be even more dangerous.โ
โYouโre Annaโs only sisterโฆ of course he doesnโt want anything to happen to you. Soโฆ he had me be the woman by his side, toโฆ die in your place.โ
Saying the last word, Claire seemed to have used up all the strength of her life, tragic and desolate.
โSo thatโs how it is, wonderful. I knew Frederick cared about me, I just knew itโฆโ
After hearing the whole story, Caroline was as happy as a child, smiling joyfully. She quickly ordered the servants to call a doctor to treat Claire, to take care of her.
Claire also completely relaxed, but seeing Caroline like that, it felt surreal. Once, she too had been like Caroline, overjoyed at getting even a little bit of Frederickโs care. Even if Frederick just looked at her a little longer, smiled at her a little, she could smile foolishly for a long time. But now, she no longer cared about these things, nor did she dare to hope for them anymore. She just wanted to live well, thatโs all.
Chapter 20: You Lied!
To live well, she had to leave here, leave Frederick.
โThereโs one more thing, Frederick not only said he wants me to shield you, he also said he wants to marry me.โ
Claire tightened her fists and continued, telling Caroline about Frederickโs plan to marry her. She was very clear that Frederick wanted to marry her to prevent any accidents, to make everyone think the woman by his side was her, not Caroline.
But Caroline, upon hearing this news, the smile on her face instantly froze. After a long time, she turned and looked at Claire, but said nothing and just left.
After Caroline left, the family doctor soon arrived, hung up an IV, brought down the fever, infused nutrients, and Claire finally felt alive again.
Chapter 20: You Lied!
But now, she started to be afraid. If Frederick knew she had told Caroline about shielding her and the marriage plan, how would he treat her? But now, she really couldnโt afford to worry about that anymore. Being by Frederickโs side, she hadnโt even reached the time when she would truly shield Caroline, but she had already flirted with death over and over. Let alone the futureโฆ She couldnโt be passive like this anymore. Since she had already told Caroline everything, and Caroline loved Frederick so much, upon hearing the news of Frederick wanting to marry her, she should definitely make a big scene. Maybe then, she could finally leave.
After that day, Claire waited and waited for Caroline to go find Frederick and cause a commotion. But for several days, she didnโt see Caroline again. She thought Caroline must have gone straight to the border to find Frederick, and the result should come soon.
Until one night a week later, Frederick suddenly kicked open the door and rushed in.
โWhat did you do to Caroline again? Why did she suddenly leave the villa?โ
Frederick grabbed her wrist, almost crushing it, his eyes filled with murderous intent. He had just quelled the riots on the border and came back to hear the servants say Caroline had left the villa. With the matter of Anna in mind, Frederick directly sentenced Claire to death.
โ!โ
But Claire didnโt even care about the pain in her wrist, her face as pale as paper, standing there without saying a word. Her hope was completely dashed! Why? Why didnโt Caroline cause trouble for Frederick after learning about their marriage plan?
