Chapter 248: Email
Richard, eyes half-closed, rested near the door. Hearing Frederick’s words, he immediately rushed inside.
“Yes, General Hawthorne.”
When Richard heard Frederick’s request to investigate Claire’s imprisonment over the past four years, he was stunned. Frederick had issued this order before, then rescinded it. Richard asked nothing and left.
Then, Frederick’s mind replayed Alan’s recording. “Not only that, I have also suffered abuse in prison during these four years.” Her words echoed relentlessly in his ears.
It was unclear how long it took before Frederick regained his senses. He rose and went to the intensive care unit to see Claire. He saw her face and could hardly believe his eyes. She was so pale, her breathing so weak, as if she might die at any moment.
Frederick had never seen Claire like this before. His heart ached. He sat in the intensive care unit for a whole day, silent, simply watching Claire. Frederick himself didn’t know why he did it. He seemed only at ease when he saw Claire breathing. He was afraid she would die.
At noon, Nathan, Arthur, and Jane arrived to see Frederick and Claire. They expressed concern for Frederick, though Jane and Arthur’s concern was undoubtedly superficial. Nathan was pleased with Frederick’s actions.
Nathan said, “You did a good job. There was an outpouring of praise for our family. However, you still have to explain to the media about those innocent people of Kingstown who died.” Then they left.
Frederick nodded, saying nothing. He just wanted Claire to wake up quickly. But as Arthur departed, he said sarcastically, “I didn’t expect that your relationship would be so deep.” Frederick sensed something strange in Arthur’s words, but chose not to dwell on it.
Caroline arrived in the evening. She said, “Frederick, as soon as I heard about the accident, I rushed over. I’m worried about you. Are you okay? I want Claire to be safe.” Caroline cried.
Frederick said, “It’s okay. The ICU can’t hold that many people. Go back first.” Normally, Frederick would comfort Caroline when she cried, but he felt disgusted and resistant.
“Okay, I’ll come see you tomorrow.” Caroline nodded and left. Before arriving, she had been shocked to learn Claire had taken a bullet for Frederick. Caroline had mentally prepared herself, anticipating Frederick’s attitude. However, she never expected him to refuse her presence and remain unwilling to speak to her.
She walked out of the hospital and took out her cell phone. Eventually, she responded to someone who had contacted her from abroad, offering assistance with the Hiokech Group.
