Chapter 278: To Vanish Without a Trace

Two screams echoed from the edge of the cliff. With Carolineโ€™s push, Antonyโ€™s foot slipped, and he and Claire fell together.

โ€œClaire, this time, I want you to vanish without a trace!โ€

Caroline stood at the cliffโ€™s edge, laughing wildly, her face twisted with glee. โ€œAnd you, Antony. You love Claire, right? Great! Die with her then! Itโ€™s perfect for you. You should be grateful that Iโ€™m allowing you to die together. Without me, youโ€™d never be with her in this life.โ€

Too excited, Caroline stood at the cliffโ€™s edge and ranted for a while before leaving. On her way down the mountain, she was so happy she could dance. Claire was entirely out of the picture. No one would compete with her for Frederick anymore. Caroline laughed again. She felt like she would laugh in her dreams.

The previous four years, Frederick had not touched her because he had not experienced how delightful lovemaking could be. Now that he had experienced it, how could he hold back? And she was the closest woman to him, the one with the most opportunity to be with him. Caroline believed her wish would come true! She had already ignored all previous doubts, as well as Dianaโ€™s words about how much Frederick cared about Claire. None of that mattered now because Claire was dead, and everything else was irrelevant.

Caroline descended the mountain happily, preparing to take a taxi back to the Halfmoon Manor. But when she took out her phone, she remembered that Zachary had asked her to go to his place today. She stood at the foot of the mountain, hesitating for a long time.

In the end, Caroline rejected Zachary: [Zachary, I have to accompany Frederick today. Heโ€™s in a sudden mood and asked me to go out with him.]

Caroline: [Sorry, Zachary. Iโ€™ll come to you next time. Iโ€™ll make sure youโ€™re satisfied with whatever you want me to do for you.]

Caroline used Frederick as an excuse. She knew very well that only by using Frederick as an excuse would Zachary have no comeback.

Soon, Zachary replied: [Alright, Iโ€™ll wait for you.]

Caroline breathed a sigh of relief and took a taxi straight back to the Halfmoon Manor. However, what she didnโ€™t know was that after Zachary replied to her, he sent someone to check her whereabouts. Having reached his current position, Zachary naturally had some cunning and means. Caroline, though, thought she had perfectly dodged it and didnโ€™t think much of it. She was too excited at the moment, just waiting to lie under Frederick. How could she bother to consider whether Zachary would check her whereabouts?

At four in the afternoon, Caroline returned to the Halfmoon Manor. She was in a perfect mood. On her way back, she bought a lot of Frederickโ€™s favorite dishes, preparing to cook a big dinner for Frederick that night. Once back to the Halfmoon Manor, Caroline plunged into the kitchen. She was busy until eight in the evening when Frederick returned from the Kingstown Security Department.

Frederick came in, changed his slippers, and entered the living room without seeing Claire. He subconsciously asked, โ€œWhereโ€™s Claire?โ€ He didnโ€™t even realize he had gotten used to Claireโ€™s presence. Caroline had been happily running out to greet Frederick, but when she heard his first question was about Claire, her smile froze.

โ€œWell, Claire hasnโ€™t come back yet. She should beโ€ฆ She should be entertaining clients at the company, I guess?โ€

Caroline clenched her hands. She had only missed a few dinners with him at home. Why did he ask about Claire as soon as he came back today? Caroline thought, โ€œIโ€™ve been by your side for four years. Shouldnโ€™t you have me on the tip of your tongue?โ€ She felt heartbroken and spoke unnaturally. After all, she had just pushed Claire and Antony off the cliff today.

โ€œShould? Are you hiding something from me?โ€

Frederick, a seasoned veteran and in charge of Kingstownโ€™s security, had interrogated countless criminals. He could tell Caroline was hiding something at a glance.

โ€œIโ€ฆ Iโ€™m notโ€ฆ Frederickโ€ฆ Iโ€ฆโ€

Caroline panicked immediately.

She almost forgot about Antony!

โ€œFrederick, actually, I just didnโ€™t want to tell you, afraid youโ€™d be angry. Claire is already engaged to you. I happened to overhear her on the phone this morning, saying she was going out with Antony tonight.โ€
