Chapter 298: Die Before Her
Antony glanced at Claire behind him and tried to get up, intending to leave with her. But with injuries this severe, there was no way he could help Claire escape. Even using every ounce of strength left in his body, he couldnโt lift her. His wounds were so painful that cold sweat kept breaking out all over his body. He knew he had no way of getting Claire out of this place. And now Caroline had tracked them down. If Leon accidentally let slip that they were hereโฆ
In that instant, countless bloody scenarios flashed through Antonyโs mind. If Caroline burst in with her people, heโd fight them to the death. No matter what, he had to protect Claire. If death were inevitable, heโd make sure to die before her.
โOh, my brother and sister have been missing for days. Weโve been searching everywhere for them. We finally found some of their clothes at the edge of the cliff. Weโre sick with worry. Weโre afraid they might have fallen off the cliff, so we sentโฆโ
โLiving under this cliff? Have you seen my brother and sister?โ
When Caroline asked this, Antonyโs heart nearly jumped into his throat. He never expected Caroline to track them down so quickly. Unable to go out and warn Leon, he could only pray repeatedly in his heart that Leon wouldnโt tell Caroline.
โReally? Iโve been living down here and havenโt seen anyone. If what youโre saying is true, youโd better send people to search quickly. There are many wild animals at the bottom of this cliff. Iโm afraid wolves might have gotten to them. You wonโt even find their remains if that happens.โ
Soon after, Leonโs voice came from outside again. Antony breathed a massive sigh of relief when he heard that Leon hadnโt revealed their presence, slumping to the ground.
After dealing with Caroline, Leon closed the door and came inside. โThat woman who just came was looking for you two, wasnโt she?โ Leon asked as soon as he entered.
โYes, sir. Thank goodness you didnโt tell her you rescued us. Sheโs the one who pushed us off the cliff.โ
Antony shifted his body and sat back down on the bed. Concerned on the surface. But the eyes never lie.
โThere wasnโt a trace of real worry in her eyes. So I played it safe and wanted to check with you first. If she really was your sister, I could always run back out and call her back.โ Leon explained with a smile, then walked over to check on Claireโs injuries. He felt her forehead. โHmm, still no fever. She should be fine and will likely wake up soon.โ
Just as Leon finished speaking and started to stand up, Claire opened her eyes. โSheโs awake! Sir, sheโs awake!โ Antony shouted excitedly as soon as he saw Claire stir.
โYouโre awake. Thank goodness. How are you feeling? Does anything hurt?โ Leon quickly came over to ask as soon as he saw Claire was conscious.
โIโmโฆ okayโฆ justโฆ the wound hurtsโฆโ
Claire had been unconscious for a long time, with no food or water, leaving her extremely weak and drained of energy.
โPain at the wound site is normal. As long as you donโt have any other discomfort, youโll be fine. Iโll go get some food prepared for you both.โ
Leon felt relieved hearing this and got up to arrange for food. Given the severity of Claire and Antonyโs injuries and their current immobility, Leon had liquid food prepared for them. Claire felt much better after eating something, and by evening, she could speak normally again. This was the second time Leon had saved Claire, counting the incident at Moon Lake.
โKid, looks like weโve got quite the destiny together.โ Leon joked, and Claire played along. โYeah, youโre truly my guardian angel.โ
After chatting with Claire for a while longer, Leon noticed it was getting late and stood up to leave. โAlright, itโs late. You two should get some rest.โ
But just as Leon stood up, there was a violent banging on the door. โSir, itโs that woman from earlier today, and sheโs brought many people with her. We only have a few men! We canโt handle them. Sir, what should we do?โ A bodyguard rushed in to report.
โCarolineโs back!โ Antonyโs heart jumped in alarm.
