Chapter 322: There's a Condition
Harrison kept his head down, his grip tight on the fork in his hand. He hadnโt called the lawyer and had only made a quick call to Frederick yesterday.
โThe lawyer will be here in ten minutes,โ Frederick spoke up, his voice calm.
โFrederick, youโre always so reliable. I knew I made the right choice with you. Donโt worry. The Prescott family will stand behind you, no matter what. Youโll have our full support.โ
Elizabeth smiled warmly before turning to Claire. โCome here, Claire. I have something important to tell you. Sit next to me.โ
โWhatโs going on, Grandma?โ Claire asked, still completely in the dark.
She was utterly confused as she followed Elizabeth to the sofa and sat beside her.
โYouโll find out soon enough,โ Elizabeth said with a touch of mystery.
Moments later, the lawyer arrived. Robert and Margaretโs expressions grew darker, their unease palpable.
Chapter 322: There's a Condition
โAlright, everyoneโs here. Letโs get started,โ Elizabeth said, her tone serious. โIโve lived a long life, and recently had stomach surgery. My heartโs not doing too well either. The truth is, I donโt have much time left. After a lot of thought, Iโve made a decision. While Iโm still clear-headed, I want to make my will in front of all of you.โ
โFirst, all my liquid assets and properties will go to Robert and Margaret. As for my shares in the Prescott Group, I hold 60%. Iโve decided to split it down the middle. Thirty percent will go to Harrison, and the other thirty percent to Claire.โ
Elizabeth hadnโt finished speaking when Claire suddenly jumped to her feet, her face a mix of disbelief and shock. โWhat? Grandma, youโre giving me 30% of the shares?โ
Harrison, Robert, and Margaret, who had already known about this decision since last night, didnโt look all that surprised. Frederick had also been informed by Harrison, but Claire was still completely in the dark.
โYes,โ Elizabeth nodded, unwavering.
โNo, Grandma, I canโt accept this. Please, take it back. Iโm not even truly a part of the Prescott family. We donโt have any blood relation. Grandma, youโฆโ
โClaire,โ Elizabeth interrupted, her tone firm and final. โYou are my granddaughter. Blood or no blood, you are mine. I said this four years ago, and I stand by it now, just as I will until the day I die.โ
Harrison, standing off to the side, couldnโt hold back a mocking laugh. โHah, so easy to get 30% of our family shares. Iโm sure youโre absolutely thrilled, pretending otherwise.โ
โHarrison!โ Elizabethโs sharp voice cut through the air, silencing him instantly as she turned back to Claire and gently guided her back down to sit beside her.
โClaire, donโt be hasty. Let me finish what I have to say. If, after hearing everything, you still donโt want the shares, Iโll take them back.โ
Her tone softened as she spoke, and for a moment, the tension in the room seemed to ease. Harrison, Robert, and Margaret all exhaled in quiet relief. But Frederick, as always, remained calm, his expression unreadable. He knew Elizabeth well. She wasnโt someone who made decisions lightly. Everything she did had a purpose behind it. She might have inherited the Prescott family legacy, but it was her strength and foresight that made them the powerhouse they were today.
โAlright, Grandma. Please, continue,โ Claire said, finally managing to collect herself. She sat back down on the sofa, her mind racing.
โThe 30% shares Iโm giving Claire are different from Harrisonโs. She will be a shareholder, but without voting rights, no decision-making power. She wonโt be able to transfer the shares to anyone, and her children wonโt inherit them. If anything happens to her, the shares will automatically go back to Harrison. Iโll have the lawyer draft another agreement for her to sign later. The only right she will have is my veto vote. She will have the right to participate in shareholder meetings and vote for the chairman.โ
At this, Harrison, Robert, and Margaret finally let out a collective sigh of relief. The atmosphere in the room felt less tense.
Elizabeth then turned her gaze toward Frederick. โAs for the 30% shares being transferred to Harrison, thereโs a condition too. This condition depends on you, Frederick. If you agree to never marry Claire, I will transfer the shares to Harrison, and no matter the outcome of your presidential election, the Prescott family will support you unconditionally.โ
โWhat?โ
