Chapter 399: Bring the Toys

โ€œYeah, I believe you, Caroline. Of course, I believe you. Donโ€™t worry, I wonโ€™t doubt you. Come on, letโ€™s eat. Itโ€™s already noonโ€”arenโ€™t you hungry?โ€

The food had already been served. Claire absently nodded while eating.

โ€œOh, okay.โ€ Caroline nodded and turned to Frederick. โ€œFrederick, foodโ€™s ready.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Frederick nodded and returned to the dining table to eat.

Meanwhile, Claire hadnโ€™t said another word, just focused on eating her food quickly. She finished in no time. โ€œIโ€™m done,โ€ she announced. โ€œSince I just got out of the hospital and havenโ€™t fully recovered yet, Iโ€™m going upstairs to rest. You guys take your time.โ€

She wiped her mouth with a napkin and headed straight for the stairs.

โ€œOh, okay,โ€ Caroline responded promptly.

Claire gave a slight smile but didnโ€™t acknowledge her further as she disappeared upstairs. Frederick kept his head down and continued eating in silence.

After Claire left, Caroline didnโ€™t say anything else either. Claireโ€™s earlier words had left her heart pounding and her thoughts in complete chaos. She was in no mood to flash her usual bright smile at Frederick.

Frederick finished his meal soon after. He set down his utensils and stood up, glancing at Claireโ€™s room upstairs before pulling out his phone to call Richard.

โ€œFind us a qualified live-in doctor, someone who can be here 24/7. And get all the necessary medical equipment we might need brought in, too.โ€

Caroline sat there listening to Frederickโ€™s instructions to Richard, her hands clenched into fists, teeth gritting in anger.

Claire had just mentioned being discharged, and now Frederick was arranging all these family doctors and medical equipment. It had to be for Claire. Since when did he start caring so much about her? He definitely wasnโ€™t like this before the accident.

Back when sheโ€™d pushed Claire off that cliff, Frederick wouldnโ€™t believe a word Claire said, no matter how much she tried to explain. But now, things had changed.

What could have happened these past few days? And with what Claire had just said, what if Frederick actually got suspicious?

Getting more anxious by the second, Caroline quickly pulled out her phone and fired off a WhatsApp message to Diana, filling her in on everything.

Diana: [What? Is Claire alive? Did she come back? She is really lucky.]

But Diana seemed to care only about Claireโ€™s survival. As for the accident, she brushed off Carolineโ€™s concerns with a few quick reassurances. Diana figured that since nothing had happened after all this time, Frederick couldnโ€™t possibly suspect her. If he did, he wouldโ€™ve made his move already.

Caroline messaged back: [Diana, we should get ready just to be safe. Think hard. Did we miss cleaning up any evidence? We need to take care of everything ASAP.]

Caroline couldnโ€™t help but worry, repeatedly sending reminders to Diana.

Diana quickly replied: [Got it, donโ€™t worry so much.]

Just as Caroline finished reading Dianaโ€™s message, Frederick, who had just ended his call, suddenly asked, โ€œCaroline, did you know about Claire falling off a cliff before the car accident?โ€

โ€œWhat? Falling off a cliff? What cliff? I had no idea. Frederick, when did this happen?โ€

Caroline was already on edge, and this news only made it worse.

Making a quick excuse about not sleeping well the night before, she hurried upstairs to her room.

Back in her room, Carolineโ€™s anxiety kept building. She pulled up WhatsApp again and sent a message to Zachary.

Caroline: [Hey Zachary, missing you a lot.]

Zachary called her immediately.

โ€œMissing me? Heh, really? Listen up, you little slut. Donโ€™t think I donโ€™t know exactly what you are. Iโ€™ve seen everything youโ€™ve been up to lately. Got all those videos of you throwing yourself at those pretty boys, too.โ€

8/8

His voice dripped with contempt. โ€œYouโ€™re not missing me. Youโ€™re in trouble again, arenโ€™t you? Well, let me tell you something. Unless you get on your knees and beg, donโ€™t even think about me helping you out of this mess. This time, bring your toys when you come crawling back.โ€
