Chapter 142

Jenny worked at the power plant. With a stable job and no real stress, she was rather plump and cheerful. Today, she wore a bright green sweater and styled her short hair in fluffy, wool-like curls, making her look like a robust Christmas tree.

“What are you talking about? Can’t you speak properly?” her second-eldest uncle, Harold Sutton, asked, gently pulling Jenny back.

In contrast to Jenny’s plump figure, Harold was tall and slim. He wore a beige sweater and suit pants. His hair was slicked back in a shiny, well-groomed style. Even in his fifties, he showed no signs of aging and still looked quite dashing. The Suttons had good genes, and Lionel’s brothers were all handsome.

When her husband tugged Jenny, she pouted and said, “What’s the big deal? I’m not saying anything wrong. Miranda hasn’t spent Christmas with us for years. It’s not an issue for me, but Lionel and Mindy have really missed her.”

Jenny warmly approached Miranda and said, “No wonder they say women get more beautiful with age. You’ve been to the capital, and it really shows! You have such refined grace compared to us small-town folks.”

Miranda wore a long white down coat, which she removed upon entering, revealing a beige sweater and a light brown wool skirt. She also wore brown knee-high boots. Her hair was down, with a bow headband holding the front strands in place. She looked fresh and elegant, with a sweet, creamy charm. It was no wonder Jenny praised her grace.

Quincey Sutton overheard her mother praising Miranda and muttered, “Mom, can you be quiet?”

Jenny shot her a look. “You’re always on your phone and complaining about me talking too much. You should learn from your sister. You could use some tips on fashion and style!”

Quincey wore a short, tight top with a checkered skirt and snow boots. Her heavy eye makeup gave her a bold look. Unfortunately, she inherited Jenny’s build, with a plump waist and legs. Her outfit didn’t do much to flatter her figure.

Quincey seemed unaware of this and rolled her eyes in response to Jenny’s comment.

“Where’s Leonard?” Lionel asked, looking around.

Rena answered, “He’s in the study taking a call from a client. Even during Christmas, he’s busy and can’t join us right now.”

Anna, who had been silent on the couch, spoke up: “Leonard is a businessman, so it’s normal for him to be busy. Let’s not rush him. We can wait until he’s finished before starting the meal.”

“Exactly,” George agreed. “We can wait. It’s not like we’re starving.”

Rena looked uncomfortable. “Is that really okay?”

“Why wouldn’t it be?” Anna replied firmly. “If I say we wait, then we wait. Who’s going to complain?”

“Alright then… It’s better to have everyone together for Christmas. Please, take a seat, Mindy.” Rena invited Mindy to sit down.

“Rena, you go ahead and get settled. Don’t worry about me,” Mindy said, choosing a spot away from George and Anna.

Mindy had been rescued from a river by Lionel. She had lost all memory of her past and didn’t know where she was from or why she had ended up in the river. She had no idea if her parents or any siblings were still alive. Essentially, she was an orphan with no known family.

Lionel was the only one of the Sutton brothers to attend college, going to Queenstone College, which was as prestigious as Bedford College. He brought great pride to the Sutton family.

Anna and George had been proud of Lionel and had hoped to introduce him to the daughter of factory manager James Holger. However, Lionel chose Mindy, who had an unknown background and no possessions, and he was quite determined in his decision. Anna and George believed that Mindy had seduced Lionel. They called her a temptress and still held a grudge over it.
