Chapter 162
Leonard said, "That's not a problem. Once the payments come in and we have more cash, we can pay a bit extra and buy a villa from someone else."
Rena's lips twitched. She wanted to retort that who would buy a used house as a marital home? However, her husband had made his point. Considering the company's tight financial situation, she had no choice but to concede.
The Lakeview Villa, however, remained a sore point. She felt unsatisfied that she couldn't buy it, due to their lack of funds.
"Are you sure it's the Lakeview Villa?" Rena asked Jenny on the phone, confirming the information.
Jenny smiled. Clearly, everyone found it unbelievable that Lionel's family, previously considered poor and downtrodden, had actually bought a villa.
Jenny exclaimed, "I saw the property purchase agreement with my own eyes! It can't be a mistake. Moreover, Mindy admitted it herself. She said Miranda bought it for them as a gift. Oh, how I wish I had such a capable daughter! Mimi, despite being a woman, seems to be outshining even Jack!"
Jack, who had started his own company, hadn't even given his parents a villa. Rena's tone grew colder. "Miranda is certainly a good daughter, but does she really have that much money?"
"Oh, I wouldn't know about that. Rena, don't underestimate young women these days," Jenny replied.
Rena dropped the subject. "Come over and pick up the stuff when you're free," she said.
"I'll come tomorrow. I'll have Harold drive over to get it."
"Alright." Jenny hung up.
Harold frowned. "Why are you spreading this news everywhere? Are you afraid no one will find out Lionel's family bought a villa?" This was unlike Jenny.
"What do you mean? We're all family! We need to share the good news that Lionel bought a villa!" Jenny retorted.
"What are you really up to?" Harold knew his wife well.
Jenny snorted, "I'm just letting everyone know so they'll congratulate Lionel. What's wrong with that?"
Harold insisted, "You definitely have a hidden agenda."
Jenny chuckled slyly and nudged him. "I didn't know you knew me so well…"
"What are you doing? I'm driving!"
"Well, I can't deny I have my reasons. If I asked Lionel or Mindy directly, they'd never tell me where the money came from. So, I'm getting someone else to ask." Jenny didn't believe they could withstand the pressure. Even if they didn't reveal the source of the money, at least they would be frustrated by the persistent questioning. Besides, why should she be the only one feeling jealous? It would be more fun if everyone were involved.
Harold remained unconvinced. "Cynthia doesn't like to make a fuss, and Rena tends to mind her own business. I think your plan won't work."
Jenny scoffed, "That just shows you don't understand your sister or Rena."
Cynthia, indeed, avoided meddling in others' affairs, preferring to focus on her own life. However, she preached feminism and female independence, stemming from the trauma of her divorce. She held herself to this standard and imposed it on others, despising women who relied on men for material gain.
As for Rena Jenny's lips curled into a disdainful smile. Rena might seem saintly, but she could be a "crazed bitch" when provoked.
Jenny muttered, "Just wait and see. Lionel's family is in for some serious trouble!"
"Cynthia, what an unexpected guest! Why have you come? Please come in…"
The following day, Cynthia paid Lionel and Mindy an unexpected visit while they were packing. Lionel was surprised; his sister maintained high standards, lofty expectations, and an aloof personality, rarely interacting with Lionel's or Harold's family beyond occasional holiday gatherings at Leonard's home.
