Chapter 164

Cynthia earnestly advised Miranda, “What I’m trying to say is simple: As women, we should never take shortcuts, no matter how tough things get. We need to work hard and stay grounded. We should not rely on luck or resort to unscrupulous means of making money!”

Miranda nodded in agreement. “That’s true,” she said.

“You agree, don’t you?” Cynthia was relieved that Miranda wasn't beyond redemption.

“Of course,” Miranda replied.

Cynthia nodded. “Good. You should return the villa as soon as possible. You might lose some fees, but it’s worth it for peace of mind.”

Miranda was astonished.

“What’s the matter? Are you reluctant?” Cynthia’s expression darkened. Had her words been in vain?

Miranda finally smiled, understanding Cynthia's visit. “Firstly, I completely agree with what you said. Women should be independent and self-reliant. However,” Miranda’s tone sharpened, “I didn’t rely on anyone. I’ll take your advice as kindly offered, based on your experiences. I won’t take it personally.”

Miranda felt she had made her point clearly. Anyone with common sense would understand.

She continued, “Moreover, I bought the villa for my parents. The agreement is signed; it’s not being returned. Finally, I suggest you be more tactful when sharing your life experiences. You can offer advice, but issuing orders is unnecessary.” Cynthia had essentially made a decision for them. Her intentions might have been good, but she was meddling.

Miranda wouldn't let her.

As expected, Cynthia stormed off, muttering, “What a sharp-tongued and stubborn girl!”

Lionel frowned at the comment. Mindy said, “Mimi, ignore her. She doesn’t know anything and yet lectured us.” Her words implied Miranda had obtained the money through questionable means, showing disrespect for Mindy.

However, Miranda wasn’t bothered by this. She was more concerned that if Cynthia knew about the villa, other relatives might also know. She could handle visits, but it would be annoying.

Unexpectedly, the following week was peaceful. No one else visited, and the move proceeded smoothly.

Lionel found moving his beloved plants difficult; the decade-old trees required considerable time and effort. Mindy, however, had it easier; her most treasured possessions were her bookshelves. She was content as long as she had her books.

By New Year’s Eve, they had finished. The garden, filled with greenery and freshly transplanted magnolia trees, complemented the villa’s minimalist design. Lionel had even planted cottage seeds, which had already sprouted. In two weeks, they would be ready to harvest. Miranda’s swing, Mindy’s lounge chair, and the wisteria from their old house were all in place. The new villa felt like home.

The yards were mostly barren, but the dry soil would soon yield to a lush green lawn in spring. The transplanted flowers would bloom throughout the garden. Miranda felt the physical labor had been worthwhile.

During the move, their neighbor, Karen, noticed their activity and assumed Lionel was finally moving out. This meant she would gain their space and possibly part of their yard.
