Chapter 174

Tina smirked coldly. “Breaking up with Hansel will be the biggest mistake of your life. Without him, you’re nothing.”

“Don’t get too full of yourself,” Miranda retorted. “Just because you aced the written exam doesn’t guarantee you’ll make it through. Let’s see how it turns out.” She lifted her chin and walked away. Miranda remained impassive, hailed a cab, and drove off.

Winter was furious. “Why didn’t you smack her? You just let her walk away?”

“I’m getting increasingly worked up about this,” Winter continued. “Is that annoying brat still at Bedford College? I’ll head over there now and teach her a lesson.”

Miranda laughed wryly. “Relax. Those were just trivial jabs. I’ve heard worse countless times.” She leisurely cut into her steak, savoring the tender, rich, creamy flavor.

Winter was puzzled by her nonchalance. “Are you a doormat? How can you put up with all that?”

Miranda chuckled, set down her cutlery, and wiped her mouth. “Have you ever heard this saying?”

“What?”

“The best way to get back at someone isn’t with a slap or a sharp comeback; it’s to show indifference to what they care about most and easily achieve what they desire. I’m confident I’ll ace the second-round interview, but I’m not so sure about her. Apart from her family, Tina’s only concern is her postgraduate admission exam result. Anyone relying on family influence and bribes to pass has already lost the race.”

Winter gave a thumbs-up. “You’ve nailed it.”

Everyone knew Tina’s strengths and weaknesses. She would need all the luck she could get to pass the second-round interview.

Luck, it seemed, was on Miranda’s side. She aced both the written test and the interview, gaining acceptance into Bedford College. Tina, on the contrary, ranked fourth overall, one point shy of third place, and failed to get in.

At the Johnson mansion, the sound of breaking things echoed from upstairs.

After receiving her results, Tina locked herself in her room and smashed everything in sight, even her favorite designer bags. Her screams and howls, punctuated by occasional fits of laughter, suggested a complete mental breakdown. The terrified housekeepers tiptoed around, fearing they’d become her next target. Hansel pushed open the door to find the room a disaster. His forehead throbbed, his veins bulging.

“Are you done with your tantrum?” he asked. “It’s not the end of the world. You can always take the exam again next year.”

Tina’s bloodshot eyes and furious expression revealed her frustration. “I’m already dealing with enough crap. Am I not allowed to lose it? This house isn’t just yours. If you can’t stand it, then leave!”

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “You can keep throwing a fit, but do it outside. Your outburst is affecting everyone else.”

She felt even more aggrieved. “I’m not going anywhere. Why should I be the one to leave? If it weren’t for Miranda, I wouldn’t have failed. It’s all her fault. You should’ve let her stay home to be a housewife. Why the heck did she have to take that postgraduate admission exam? You’re at fault, too.”
