Chapter 196

"You can use the lab anytime," Paul said. "There's no need to clock in daily. Just come whenever you're free."

Miranda was digesting a stack of research papers Christine had given her and keeping up with the latest developments in her field. Now, with an official research project, she was busier than ever.

Paul was aware of her workload, but knew she was capable of managing her time effectively.

He then reviewed the lab's guidelines and precautions with Miranda. Since each lab had different purposes, their rules varied. Miranda listened attentively, jotting down key points.

"At the moment, the lab is only used by my research group—myself and four others. I'll introduce you to them when we get a chance."

Before he could finish, a man in his forties, wearing glasses, emerged from the break room. Tall and heavily built, he resembled a strong bear, yet he held a mug of tea, steam rising from it.

"Hey, Paul, did we get a new group member?" The man's curious gaze landed on Miranda, polite and restrained.

Paul introduced him: "This is Silas Quinton, a colleague and group member. He teaches introductory physics at Bedford College."

"Hello there," Silas greeted with a broad smile. His square face radiated honesty and good nature.

Miranda was surprised, then smiled and shook his hand. "Hello, Dr. Quinton. I'm Miranda Sutton, Dr. Jefferson's…" she hesitated, "friend, I guess."

Silas raised an eyebrow, his gaze flickering between Paul and Miranda. He hadn't seen Paul bring friends to the lab before.

"Don't be nervous, young lady. You don't need to call me Dr. Quinton. Just Silas. We're not in high school—we're all friends here, haha…"

Despite his casual words, Miranda respectfully addressed him as "Dr. Quinton."

By 9:00 a.m., the other three group members had arrived.

Sandy Rivers arrived first, dressed casually in a sweatshirt, jeans, and sneakers. Miranda initially thought they were the same age, but learned Sandy was 38 and had a son in elementary school. After earning her PhD, Sandy stayed at Bedford College, doing postdoctoral research before joining Paul's group. Her routine revolved around family, school, and the lab, leaving little time for other activities—except perhaps watching TV on her tablet while waiting for data. A few days ago, her son had a fever, requiring her absence from the lab for two days.

Bryan Sundale arrived next, yawning. He'd been tweaking data and needed help from a downstairs lab group for some calculations. After two days, he'd finally gotten the results.

"It's no wonder we all agree our lab is the best!" he exclaimed. "Downstairs, the conditions are far worse. Forget a dedicated rest area or shower room—groups share a single bathroom, and the smell is unbearable."

As she stepped in, he paused, echoing Silas's question: "Oh, we have a newcomer?"

Bryan, appearing to be in his early thirties and about 5'11", had striking features. A flash of admiration crossed his eyes when he noticed Miranda. He extended his hand. "Hi, I'm Bryan Sundale. Welcome. Everyone here is pretty easygoing. Ask if you have questions."

Miranda shook his hand. "Thank you."

The sound of high heels clicking announced the arrival of the last group member.

Chapter 156 (This chapter seems to be out of order and needs context to be properly edited)

Miranda initially thought they were around the same age, but during their conversation, she found out Sandy was 38 and had a son in elementary school. After earning her PhD, Sandy stayed on at Bedford College, initially doing postdoctoral research in applied physics. When Paul extended an offer, she promptly joined his research group. Her routine typically revolved around family, school, and the lab, leaving little room for other activities. If she had any leisure interest, it was probably watching TV shows on her tablet while waiting for data in the lab. A few days ago, her son had a fever. With no one else at home, she went back to care for him for two days before hurrying back to the lab.
