Chapter 84

However, another hand stopped Sam's hand in midair. He frowned upon seeing who it was. "It's you?" he said unkindly.

"Dr. Jefferson, why—" Miranda mumbled, her voice choked with emotion.

Paul's gaze fell on her face. "Are you alright?"

Miranda nodded, sniffling. "Yes," she said, though it was far from the truth.

"My car's here; I can take you home," Paul offered.

"Okay, thanks."

Paul put an arm around her shoulder and started to leave. Miranda felt like a small rock perched precariously on a cliff, about to fall. Paul's arrival had brought her immediate relief.

"Dr. Jefferson, why are you here?"

A high-end hotel was next to the manor. He was attending a conference there and had stepped outside for some fresh air when he witnessed the incident.

"I had business here," he explained.

"Wait!" Sam called, running after them. "Paul, are you at the wrong place? The conference is next door. This is my private manor."

Paul stopped, and Miranda followed suit.

Sam continued, "She's my guest. I'll take her home. You won't have to bother."

Paul gave him an indifferent look. "Have you asked your guest what she wants?"

"I'll go with Dr. Jefferson," Miranda said immediately.

"Mimi…" Sam began, but trailed off.

"Let's go," Paul said.

Miranda nodded.

Hansel couldn't bear to watch the two men seemingly fight over Miranda. "Wait! Miranda, where do you want to go?"

"Home."

"Hm… You mean this man's home, don't you?" Hansel sneered, pointing at Paul. "What a skank. You can't live without a man. I bet you were seducing other men behind my back even before we broke up. You really are something, Miranda! You left me so decisively, so it turns out you'd already found your replacement. You didn't even spare a man in my circle. You're truly disgusting!"

Enraged and irrational, Hansel only wanted to humiliate her. He turned to Sam and Paul. "Are the used goods I slept with that attractive? Is she worth fighting over? Does she deserve this?"

Miranda trembled uncontrollably. Hansel's words cut her deeply, leaving her numb with pain. She stared at his twisted expression with reddened eyes, clenching her jaw. She felt submerged in ice water, losing all her senses.

Paul frowned, noticing Miranda's delicate frame trembling in the cold breeze. She looked as though she might fall over.

"I thought our six years together were genuine. But now I realize this is how you viewed me," she said, her voice breaking. She offered a self-deprecating smile. "I guess I made the wrong decision from the start. Every step after that was wrong, too. In the end, it was beyond saving…"

Seeing Miranda's ashen face and tears, Hansel felt a blow to the head, a lump forming in his chest.

He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came. Finally, he croaked hoarsely, "Why?"

Looking angrily at Sam, he roared, "I'm asking you why! You knew Miranda was my woman, so why did you do that?"
