Chapter 161: Played Along

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

This afternoon, we received an invitation from the Kilmers. Their patriarch is celebrating his 60th birthday on the 18th of this month. The Kilmers have been our familyโ€™s close allies for years, and our families share a deep history. Since theyโ€™ve extended the invitation, we should attend. โ€œWho do you think should go on my behalf?โ€

The brothers exchanged glances. Christopher spoke first. โ€œGrandpa, Iโ€™ve been swamped with work lately. Iโ€™m afraid I canโ€™t make time for this.โ€

Tanner quickly chimed in. โ€œIโ€™m tied up with Veloria Fashion Week. The new designs arenโ€™t finished yet, and I need to oversee everything. I wonโ€™t be able to go either.โ€

Henry added, โ€œGrandpa, I have some urgent matters to handle as well.โ€

Finally, George turned to Benjamin and me. โ€œSince the three of them are busy, Benjamin and Hayley, the two of you can represent me.โ€

I was about to say something, but Benjamin beat me to it. โ€œIโ€™ll have Tyrone arrange our schedule. Weโ€™ll be there on time.โ€

Swallowing my words, I nodded. โ€œAlright, George. Iโ€™ll go.โ€

The Kilmers and the Southwells have always had a close relationship. The Kilmer family has two brothers: Philip Kilmer, the elder, and Eric Kilmer, Madelineโ€™s father. Both Philip and Eric were once Georgeโ€™s trusted deputies, and the Kilmers hold a notable position in high society. Philipโ€™s birthday celebration was to take place aboard an ultra-luxurious cruise ship.

When Benjamin and I arrived, a steady stream of elites was already making their way onto the ship. โ€œI heard weโ€™ll be staying overnight on the cruise and returning to shore tomorrow morning. Later, if you need to rest, just ask a staff member for your room key,โ€ Benjamin reminded me.

Looking at the lively scene around us, I simply replied, โ€œOkay!โ€

We stepped out of the car, and Benjamin offered his arm to me. I hesitated. โ€œHold on to me,โ€ he said.

Reluctantly, I slipped my hand into the crook of his arm, and we walked toward the cruise ship side by side. The proximity made Hera stir with excitement inside me.

โ€œBen!โ€ From a distance, Madeline waved enthusiastically at Benjamin. She quickly moved closer, practically leaping in front of him.

โ€œHello, Ben,โ€ she greeted warmly, her tone casual and entirely lacking the respect usually reserved for addressing an Alpha.

Benjamin frowned slightly at her forwardness but refrained from reprimanding her. โ€œHi.โ€

Madeline didnโ€™t seem to noticeโ€”or care aboutโ€”his cold response. She glanced at me with disdain before smirking and arching an eyebrow in mock friendliness. โ€œMs. Carson, youโ€™re here too. Enjoy the night!โ€

Ignoring Heraโ€™s discomfort at her scent, I maintained a polite faรงade. โ€œThank you.โ€

Madelineโ€™s eyes flicked to where my hand rested on Benjaminโ€™s arm. She rolled her eyes briefly before regaining her composure. โ€œBen, let me show you both around.โ€

โ€œLead the way, Ms. Kilmer,โ€ Benjamin said curtly.

Madeline took the lead, enthusiastically explaining, โ€œPhilip originally wanted to host the celebration at home, but I suggested the cruise ship for something livelier. This way, everyone can have more fun. Donโ€™t you agree, Ms. Carson?โ€

I played along with her performance, keeping my tone neutral. โ€œThe night view from the cruise must be stunning. Itโ€™s a thoughtful choice.โ€

Her smile grew even wider at my words. โ€œIโ€™ve also arranged a special program for tonight. Donโ€™t forget to join us!โ€ she said, throwing me a knowing wink before walking ahead.

Something about her expression felt off, and I couldnโ€™t shake the feeling that there was more to her plans than she let on.
