Alpha Hayleyโ€™s Destined Mate

Chapter 562: Got Time to Talk?

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

Did he notice something?! I panicked for a moment, quickly taking a deep breath and forcing myself to stay calm. When I saw he didnโ€™t press further, I turned my head away and said nothing more.

After Odessa left the police station, she was completely distracted. Her thoughts kept drifting back to the words Benjamin and Hayley had said when they left. Axel called her name, but she didnโ€™t respond.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on with you? Thereโ€™s something off with you since you came back this afternoon,โ€ Axel said, setting down his wine glass and deciding to have a serious talk with her.

โ€œItโ€™s nothing,โ€ Odessa replied absentmindedly.

Ever since George forced him out of the Midnight Packโ€™s alpha position after his wolf was severely injured, he had lost all motivation. He didnโ€™t even bother with family affairs anymore. Talking to him about it felt pointless.

Axel wanted to say something, but Odessaโ€™s phone rang before he could. She didnโ€™t even glance at it, just answered and held it to her ear. โ€œWhoโ€™s this?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s me, Mrs. Southwell. Do you have time to talk?โ€

When Odessa heard Tinaโ€™s voice, she glanced at Axel, then stood up and walked to the balcony with the phone. After closing the glass door, Odessa raised her voice. โ€œIf you have something to say, just say it.โ€

โ€œWell then, Iโ€™ll get straight to the point. You must know about my son and Hayley by now, so you probably understand why Iโ€™m reaching out to you.โ€

Tinaโ€™s tone was calm, without a hint of pleading. She had always been treated like royalty, holding her head high and never learning to humble herself. Odessa didnโ€™t mind that, but when it came to Hayley and Benjamin, she honestly didnโ€™t know how to respond.

Seeing that Odessa didnโ€™t reply right away, Tina continued on her own. โ€œYoung people are proud and hot-headed; a little conflict is normal, but you canโ€™t only focus on whatโ€™s right in front of you. The Ortegas and the Southwells are influential families. For the good of your Midnight Pack, you canโ€™t afford to cut ties with our family. Donโ€™t you agree?โ€

Let alone Hayley.

โ€œMrs. Southwell!โ€ Tina noticed Odessaโ€™s tone soften, and her attitude immediately became more forceful. โ€œJonah and Daniel will eventually take responsibility for the future of the Ortega family. If anything happens to them, I canโ€™t guarantee that the rest of the family wonโ€™t take drastic measures. And if your Midnight Packโ€™s safety gets dragged into this, itโ€™ll be beyond our control!โ€

Odessa fell silent, fully aware that while the Ortegas were also werewolves, they had witch blood in their ancestry and were capable of any cruel tactics. If they were pushed too far, it would definitely threaten the safety of the Midnight Pack. Itโ€™s better to have one more friend than one more enemy.

After a brief silence, Odessa seemed to make up her mind. She spoke into the phone, โ€œIโ€™ll give it a try, but I canโ€™t make any promises. And donโ€™t think itโ€™s because the Southwells are afraid of the Ortegasโ€”this is me, Odessa, doing you a favor!โ€

Then, she hung up the phone with a sharp snap. She was the sole mistress of the Southwells, and no one intimidated her like that. Although she was angry, she opened her contacts and dialed a number with a grey profile picture. The phone connected right away. Skipping the pleasantries, she went straight to the point, asking, โ€œWhere is he now?โ€

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

Benjamin and I made a quick trip to the supermarket, bought a bunch of groceries, and after dropping me off at my door, he went back to work. While I was cooking, Virginia came in to help. But she was used to a life of luxury, and even if she wasnโ€™t feeling great, she was always attended to by servants, so all she could do was wash the vegetables. She always smiled at me, her demeanor kind and warm, and she loved chatting with me.

โ€œMs. Carson, youโ€™re truly rareโ€”so talented, kind, and smart. Your cooking skills are impressive, too. Youโ€™re not any less than those top alphas.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true. You just havenโ€™t met enough people. There are still plenty of good girls in the world,โ€ I said casually.

โ€œThatโ€™s true,โ€ Virginia nodded, then sighed heavily. โ€œI really havenโ€™t been out much lately to see the world.โ€

Realizing Iโ€™d said something wrong, I paused in my chopping, feeling guilty. I quickly reassured her, โ€œThereโ€™s no rush. Youโ€™ve got plenty of time.โ€

But Virginia sighed again, her tone full of pessimism. โ€œWith that so-called daughter of mine around, I doubt Iโ€™ll ever get the chance.โ€

Her words made me feel unexpectedly sad, too. Heraโ€™s mournful howl echoed inside me as well.

I thought to myself that maybe it was because I hadnโ€™t lived as an alpha for so long, that my emotions had started to take over, making me more sensitive and easily affected. Thinking about Freyaโ€”that villainโ€”I pondered for a while before making a decision. I put the knife down, looked up at Virginia with a serious expression, and sincerely promised, โ€œI can help you. Just ask, and Iโ€™ll clean up the mess for you.โ€
