Chapter 57: He Doesnโ€™t Want to Be My Mate

Hayleyโ€™s POV

After George finished talking, he motioned for Matthew to pull out some paperwork. Then, he turned to me.

โ€œHayz, Iโ€™ve given this a lot of thought. Since one day youโ€™ll choose one of my grandsons as your mate, youโ€™ll be my granddaughter-in-law. The future of the Southwells will be yours to shape, so Iโ€™m transferring 30 percent of my shares to you. Itโ€™s a gift from me, no matter who you marry or become the Luna of our Midnight Pack.โ€

The Southwell brothers were all taken aback, except Benjamin. Their expressions showed shock. Christopher was the first to voice his thoughts.

โ€œGrandpa, isnโ€™t this a bit rash? Even setting aside if Hayley will marry into our family, giving away 30 percent of the company shares is a big risk.โ€

โ€œYes, Grandpa. Maybe you should reconsider,โ€ Henry added.

โ€œI also think itโ€™s a bit hasty,โ€ Tanner chimed in, glancing at me. โ€œSheโ€™s still young and may not be ready for such responsibility.โ€

George wasnโ€™t fazed by their concerns and addressed me directly. โ€œIโ€™ve considered everything, but Iโ€™ve made up my mind. If Hayz is okay with it, she just needs to sign the papers.โ€

I bit my lip. Thirty percent of the Southwell shares was a huge amount, something many would jump at. But for me, the Alpha of the Shadow Pack, it was just a number. What mattered more was that I had no intention of staying with the Midnight Pack or with the Southwells. Besides Benjamin, I had no interest in any of the Southwell brothersโ€”especially not as a mate. Moreover, Benjamin had made it clear that he didnโ€™t want me to pick him.

With that in mind, I responded, โ€œGrandpa, this is too generous. I canโ€™t accept it. You should take it back.โ€

โ€œHayz, I know youโ€™re thoughtful, but this decision is final. You can leave it with me for now. If you ever need it in the future, itโ€™ll be yours. No matter what happens, Iโ€™ll always treat you as my granddaughter. Whether you marry into this family or find your destined mate elsewhere, these shares are yours as a wedding gift.โ€

โ€œGrandpa, Iโ€ฆโ€ My voice caught as emotions welled up. I hugged him tightly.

He patted my back reassuringly. โ€œItโ€™s alright. Youโ€™re grown now. Just listen to me.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ I still wanted to find a reason to decline.

โ€œNo need to overthink it. Letโ€™s wrap up business and enjoy dinner,โ€ George said, dismissing my protest and urging everyone to eat.

At dinner, though, I couldnโ€™t help but notice that, aside from Benjamin, the Southwell brothers werenโ€™t eating much. Christopher had to leave midway for work, and not long after, Tanner made an excuse and left as well. In the end, only Benjamin, Henry, and Irving were left at the table.

โ€œI have some matters to discuss with Mr. York,โ€ George said as he got up. โ€œThe three of you can take Hayz home on your way out.โ€

After he left, Henry spoke up. โ€œBoss, Iโ€™ve got plans with my friends tonight and wonโ€™t be going back. Let Ben take you back.โ€

With that, he left, leaving only me with Benjamin and Irving. Arrangement suggested Benjamin should take me home, but Irving stepped in first.

โ€œCome with me,โ€ he said.

I waved to Benjamin. โ€œWeโ€™ll head out now.โ€

Benjamin nodded but gave Irving a long, meaningful look. I could tell something was off between them.

As I settled into Irvingโ€™s car, Hera, my inner wolf, was unhappy. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you go back with Benjamin? Heโ€™s our destined mate!โ€

โ€œCome on! Donโ€™t you remember? He said he didnโ€™t want me to choose him. Iโ€™m an Alpha; I have my pride,โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be so uncontrollable whenever he appears. Canโ€™t you restrain yourself a bit?โ€ I scolded Hera.

โ€œHow can I control myself around him? His scent is irresistible. Heโ€™s our destined mate, chosen by the Moon Goddess!โ€ Hera retorted.

โ€œCalm down. When this year is over, weโ€™ll leave the Midnight Pack and find a mate we both agree on,โ€ I reassured her.

Irvingโ€™s voice interrupted my thoughts, โ€œYou donโ€™t seem to be in a good mood.โ€

I snapped out of my thoughts. Before I could speak, he continued, โ€œWant to listen to some music?โ€

I nodded. โ€œSure.โ€

He turned on the car stereo, and a soft, relaxing tune played.

โ€œThis is my favorite song, written by the famous composer, Harmony,โ€ Irving said.

Recognizing the melody, I paused for a moment before asking, โ€œDo you like her?โ€
