Chapter 680: He Refuses

โ€œHow come itโ€™s you?โ€ Odessaโ€™s voice dripped with surprise.

Then, she sneered. โ€œI really raised a good son, huh? For a woman, he doesnโ€™t even want to talk to his own mother!โ€

โ€œBenjamin is indeed a good man,โ€ I ponded icily. โ€œBut if you think so little of him, why bother calling?โ€

โ€œBecause, deep down, you know Benjamin is too kind to be harsh with you, so you feel emboldened to challenge him this aggressively.โ€ I continued in a steely tone, revealing her motives without mincing words.

โ€œYou knew it was me, yet you didnโ€™t confront me directly. Why? Because youโ€™re aware that only Benjamin tolerates your tantrums. You aim to control his life, and when he resists, you claim the moral high ground to criticize him.โ€

Her silence followed, and I chuckled. โ€œJust because youโ€™re his mother, do you think heโ€™ll never truly get angry with you? Consider thisโ€”as the Alpha of the Midnight Pack, who else besides you would dare to insult and accuse him so recklessly? If heโ€™s not a good son, then what kind of mother are you?โ€

โ€œDo you believe that just by spouting high-minded words, all your actions are justified? In reality, youโ€™re just using the guise of maternal concern to satisfy your own controlling and hypocritical impulses.โ€

After laying out my thoughts, I handed the phone back to Benjamin, apologizing, โ€œSorry, I lost my composure for a moment.โ€

Benjamin looked at me, his expression one of surprise but devoid of any rebuke. He paused for a few seconds, then took the phone from my hand and calmly ended the call.

I turned my head slightly, pretending not to notice his contemplative silence.

After a brief pause, Benjamin changed the topic. โ€œI need to step out for a bit. Thereโ€™s been too much chaos recently with unpredictable forces emerging, and I need to handle it.โ€

He was referring first to the enemy, and then to the SI.

Given my connections, even notable figures from the black market had surfaced, and rumors swirled that the local packs were edging toward conflict. The city was a powder keg. I understood Benjaminโ€™s urgency.

โ€œUnderstood, go ahead,โ€ I said softly.

โ€œOkay.โ€ He nodded at Virginia and then exited the house. His departure was as serene as the phone call had been. It was as if the heated exchange had never occurred.

Peter watched him leave, then turned to me, his voice tinged with suspicion. โ€œIs he planning to secretly treat that Me Torred?โ€

Peter gave me a long, assessing look.

Ignoring his scrutiny, I walked out. Reaching the door, I veered off my intended path and headed into Benjaminโ€™s house.

Inside, I found Claudio curiously orbiting around Zayd, yet always keeping a safe distance, as if wary or respectful.

โ€œWas this guy really from the Midnight Pack before? Why canโ€™t I find any information about Zayd at all? It seems his wolf is stronger than I anticipated,โ€ Claudio mumbled, unaware that I could hear every word.

Seeing him shirking his duties again, and eyeing the enigmatic Zayd, I decided on a quick test and kicked Claudio from behind.

Caught off guard, Claudio stumbled forward, crashing into Zayd. The flash of lethal intent in Zaydโ€™s eyes didnโ€™t escape me. This small provocation confirmed my suspicion that Zayd was no ordinary beta enforcer, but someone far more dangerous and aggressive.

โ€œHey!โ€ Claudio exclaimed, rubbing his backside as he turned and saw it was me. His face morphed into an expression of exaggerated aggrievement.

Claudio grumbled, โ€œNext time you want to kick me, at least warn me. I could have moved out of the way. You nearly scared me half to death with that sneak attack!โ€

I shot him a cold look and commanded briskly, โ€œGet up and do your job. I need you to translate for me.โ€
