Chapter 793 We're Even Now
Hayley's POV:
That man locked eyes with Trumanโs crimson wolf eyes, sensed his Alpha aura, and bolted in fear.
Truman smiled teasingly, then softened as he looked at me, sounding confident. โI heard you had something for me, so I came over.โ
I glanced at him, keeping my tone cool. โYeah. I do.โ
Then, I walked over to the stone-cutting table where Humbert stood, grabbed a regular-looking sapphire, and placed it in Trumanโs hand.
โThanks for saving me these past few days. Weโre even now.โ
โEven?โ Truman looked at the gem, then at me. โThatโs it?โ
I frowned. โWhat more were you expecting?โ
He tilted his head toward the rare, egg-sized sapphire Humbert was holding. โWhat about that one?โ
I shot him a cold stare. โThat one is for my fiancรฉ.โ
Truman gave me a complicated look. โSo, even if I risk my life for you, Iโll never measure up to him?โ
Seeing him jealous for no reason, I didnโt even know what to say.
โI think you need to understand something,โ I said flatly. โYouโre not the only one whoโd go that far for me.โ
Benjamin, my destined mate, would. So would my Beta, Thomas, and all the enforcers under me.
Their loyalty wasnโt in question.
I told him bluntly, โIf you did all that expecting something in return, then you had the wrong idea. I never asked for it, and I donโt need it. I donโt want there to be any debts between us.โ
Truman didnโt say a word. He just looked at me meaningfully, then tossed the sapphire back to Humbert and left.
I breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Humbert. โWhen you take Ms. Smith home, give this gem to her.โ
Melody, who was just about to leave, paused and turned back. โExcuse me, Ms. Carson. Did I upset you somehow?โ
I shook my head. โWhy would you think that?โ
She frowned in confusion. โThen why are you asking me to take something my boss turned down? Are you trying to get me fired?โ
โSorry,โ I said with a shrug. โI thought you two were mates. I figured he wouldnโt be mad if you gave it to him. I didnโt mean anything by it.โ
โHold on.โ Melody raised her hand to stop me. โMates? Who told you that?โ
I blinked. โArenโt you?โ
She looked kind of angry now. โOf course not!โ
โAh, okay. Got it.โ I nodded, a little thrown off.
She finally walked away, but her words stuck with me.
Until Truman accepted something from me, that feeling of being in his debt wouldnโt go away.
I had just said I didnโt want to have any debts, yet here I was, caught in this weird back-and-forth.
It seemed I just couldnโt break free from him.
I bit my lip, feeling a little annoyed.
Still, I hadnโt expected that Truman and Melody werenโt mates.
Once Melody was gone, Humbert and Becky came over.
Becky said, โMs. Carson, I canโt thank you enough. If it werenโt for you, the Hanovers wouldโve ruined my life.โ
โItโs nothing,โ I replied, my mind still elsewhere.
But she still looked unsettled. โMs. Carson, did the Hanovers truly cause my parentsโ deaths?โ
โThereโs no reason for me to lie about it.โ
โI didnโt mean that,โ Becky said, looking down. โItโs just a shame that I donโt have solid proof. I canโt even get justice for them.โ
โDonโt stress about that,โ I told her, my eyes narrowing. โYouโll get your shot at revenge soon.โ
In truth, Iโd already arranged for the backup evidence to be delivered where it needed to go.
