Chapter 816 Sheโ€™s Definitely Up to Something

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

I tapped into the messageโ€“just as I thought, it was about the Bennettsโ€™ birthday party.

โ€œCome with us to the Bennettsโ€™ banquet tomorrow night.โ€

Finished

It was a flat directive. There was no request for my opinion. Yet he casually lumped Freya and himself together as โ€œus.โ€

I stared at the message, sneered, and didnโ€™t bother replying.

Right then, a friend request from Truman popped up. I declined it and sent back a message. โ€œI already have plans tomorrow. Find another date.โ€

He messaged back almost instantly, โ€œWith whom? Who else dares to steal you from me?โ€

I gave the screen a cold glance. This guy sure thought highly of himself.

I wasnโ€™t planning to respond, but more messages followed.

โ€œWhat time? Where? Maybe we wonโ€™t even overlap. Only doing one thing a day is such a waste."

โ€œTomorrow at 2 p.m., at the International Center. Itโ€™ll be over by 6. What about you, Ms. Sander?"

โ€œCome on, with sincerity like mine, donโ€™t I deserve a shot?โ€

When he finally sent โ€œAre we really going to keep texting like this forever?โ€โ€“I gave in and accepted his friend request.

There was no other reason. It was just that chatting with him like this was annoying as hell.

Almost immediately, he called.

I put him on speaker and said bluntly, โ€œYou expect me to believe this is just about a party? That thereโ€™s no one else in the world who could be your date?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t believe it, but that doesnโ€™t make it untrue. Ms. Sander, I could leverage my contacts as Alpha of Grimmoon Pack โ€ฆ and help you find that missing doctor friend of yours.

โ€œConsider it a bonus gift. Soโ€“what do you say?โ€ he asked seriously.

I lowered my gaze, thinking.

The doctor he mentionedโ€ฆ he must mean Claudio.

If he could track down Rosalie, maybe he was someone to take seriously.

It wasnโ€™t like I had anything to lose. Why not take the deal?

โ€œYouโ€™re being so generous. How could I possibly say no?โ€ I said coolly.

Truman let out a low laugh.

โ€œIโ€™m just curiousโ€“youโ€™re throwing so many resources at me. Arenโ€™t you afraid you wonโ€™t get a return on your investment?โ€ I probed.

Flashed

It was intentional. My way of making it clear: if he was expecting some kind of grand payoffโ€“like me becoming his mateโ€“that just wasnโ€™t going to happen.

He chuckled, then replied seriously, โ€œThatโ€™s not something you need to worry about. If I can spend it, I can earn it back. But someone like you, Ms. Sander? Thereโ€™s only one in the world.

โ€œIโ€™m not someone who gives up halfway. And I hate walking away from something without trying. So Iโ€™ll do everything I can to change your mind. All I ask isโ€“donโ€™t shut me out completely.โ€ There was an unusual edge of sincerity in his voice.

โ€œThatโ€™s just sweet talk,โ€ I muttered, irritated, and hung up without hesitation.

That night, a highโ€“ranking werewolf I didnโ€™t recognize showed up at my door.

I stepped outside and looked down at the middleโ€“aged man in a tux standing at the foot of the stairs. โ€œAnd you are?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m the Bennettsโ€™ stewardโ€“Salazar Bennett.โ€ He gave a polite bow.

โ€œMr. Bennett, what do you want?โ€ I asked, frowning.

He held up an ornate gift box. โ€œMs. Walton knows youโ€™re busy and might not have had time to prepare a gown for tomorrow, so she personally selected one for both you and Ms. Freya. She also instructed me to make sure it was delivered to you in person.โ€

Same Celine I humiliated at the mall less than two days ago? That caught me off guard. Celine? Suddenly sheโ€™s being all gracious and generous?

Yeah, right. Sheโ€™s definitely up to something.
