Chapter 12

I was arranging a tray of cheese and meats on the ottoman in my walk-in closet when my phone's security camera app alerted me to someone at the front door. A smile spread across my face when I saw Viona and Amber, each carrying two bottles of wine. I hurried to answer.

โ€œHey, girls!โ€ I said, opening the door.

A chorus of squeals greeted meโ€”hilarious and slightly deafening.

โ€œWoah, take it down a notch,โ€ I said, stepping aside to let them in.

โ€œSorry, sorry,โ€ Viona said, prancing inside. โ€œWeโ€™re a bit excited, thatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just been so long since the three of us got together,โ€ Amber added.

โ€œI know,โ€ I said, feeling guilty for neglecting my friends. Iโ€™d been so focused on pleasing Noah that other aspects of my life had been sidelined. No more. โ€œCome on,โ€ I continued, gesturing for them to follow. โ€œEverythingโ€™s already set up in my closet.โ€

โ€œSo,โ€ Viona said as we entered, โ€œwhatโ€™s the dress code for this charity ball?โ€

โ€œFormal, definitely,โ€ I replied.

Viona and Amber placed the wine bottles beside the ottoman and began surveying my closet for a suitable dress.

โ€œSo, whatโ€ฆschoolmarm?โ€ Amber ran her hand down one of my more conservative, long-sleeved, long-skirted dresses.

I shivered.

โ€œEw. No, definitely not. Justโ€ฆelegant and sophisticated, but definitely not boring.โ€

โ€œSo, you want to make a statement without looking slutty?โ€ Viona pulled out a low-back, sequined red dress Iโ€™d worn maybe twice.

I shook my head, gesturing for her to put it back. She pouted but complied. โ€œThatโ€™s the general idea,โ€ I said. โ€œThere are going to be a lot of movers and shakers at this ball, so I want to dress to impress.โ€

Amber chuckled as she poured us wine. โ€œDress to impress. Thatโ€™s a phrase I havenโ€™t heard in a minute,โ€ she said.

I stuck my tongue out at her but accepted the wine.

โ€œI wonder who else will be there,โ€ Viona remarked, looking at me pointedly. โ€œI wonder if Zoe will be there.โ€

I huffed and took a sip of wine.

Chapter 12 (continued)

โ€œBased on what I learned from Scott, sheโ€™ll likely be invited,โ€ I replied. โ€œNoahโ€™s worried she wonโ€™t fit in.โ€

Viona and Amber groaned.

โ€œThis is ridiculous,โ€ Amber said, rolling her eyes. โ€œZoe and Noah just have no boundaries.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve got to set you up on some blind dates,โ€ Viona said, skimming through my cocktail dresses. โ€œAnything to divert your attention and keep you away from Noah.โ€

Amber looked like she was about to spit out her wine.

โ€œSo, you were serious?โ€ she asked. โ€œYouโ€™re actually going to divorce him?โ€

I nodded.

โ€œI thought you were just venting,โ€ she continued. โ€œYou were always the hopeless romanticโ€”out of the three of us.โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m not that hopeless romantic anymore,โ€ I countered. โ€œI need to look out for myself now.โ€ Amber shook her head, refilling her wine glass.

โ€œIโ€™ve seen a lot of couples argue one day and make up the next.โ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™t just one little argument. Itโ€™s been building up for quite some time.โ€

โ€œYou do realize what a big scandal a divorce in an Alpha family is, right?โ€

I scrunched up my nose.

โ€œYeah, well, Zoe divorced Drake, and no one seems to be giving her any trouble.โ€

โ€œNot yet,โ€ Amber remarked. โ€œTheyโ€™re only talking behind closed doors right now, but just you wait. Sheโ€™ll be a pariah soon enough.โ€

She frowned and tucked her hair behind her ear. โ€œI only want you to think this through before you pull the trigger. The last Alpha and Luna divorce was, like, 50 years ago, if I remember correctly. Maintaining marital stability, at least outwardly, is of utmost importance to Alpha families.โ€

I motioned for Amber to pour me more wine and nibbled on some cheese. โ€œIโ€™m tired of playing by the rules,โ€ I asserted. โ€œI will get what I want, one way or another.โ€

Viona raised her eyebrows, and Amber laughed.

โ€œWhere has this Hannah been?โ€ Viona commented.

I smirked. โ€œSheโ€™s just been waiting for the right time to come out and play,โ€ I said.

โ€œWell, as I see it,โ€ Viona replied, โ€œNoah only needs you to play the role of a good Luna.โ€

โ€œBut seeing as youโ€™re about to divorce,โ€ Amber continued, โ€œyou might as well get back at him a little bit.โ€

I smiled. This was why these women were my best friends.

โ€œThe question is, how?โ€ I asked.

I set my wine down and grabbed a black dress with a low-cut front and a crystal-encrusted skirt. I walked to the full-length mirror and held it up, contemplating whether it would still fit or if Iโ€™d gotten too thin.

โ€œI hope you donโ€™t mind me saying this, but youโ€™ve really gotten thin,โ€ Viona said bluntly.

โ€œYeah, a bit too thin,โ€ Amber agreed.

I placed the dress back on the rack and returned to the mirror. I lifted my shirt and looked at my ribs, which were a bit too visible. Viona and Amber were right; I was too skinny.

โ€œI know,โ€ I replied reluctantly.

โ€œHave you been eating?โ€ Viona asked, her tone concerned.

โ€œNot as well as I should be.โ€

โ€œHow long have you been doing this?โ€ Amber added.

I frowned. โ€œSince I got together with Noah.โ€

Silence fell among us. I hadnโ€™t always been like this. In high school, I was beautiful with many suitors. Once I became concerned about gaining Noahโ€™s love, though, I became obsessed with dieting and, eventually, developed bulimic behaviors. I especially worried about having a bloated stomach on our monthly intimacy nights, skipping meals the day before to address this.

Stroking my stomach, I shook my head. Iโ€™d been so crazy to go to such lengths, all for a man.

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about me,โ€ I told Viona and Amber. โ€œIโ€™m done trying to make myself into Noahโ€™s perfect woman.โ€

They both smiled.

โ€œGood,โ€ Viona said, wrapping her arms around me. โ€œI really donโ€™t want to do an intervention. It doesnโ€™t sound like fun.โ€

โ€œNot for this, you wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWith that settled,โ€ Amber said, walking towards my clothes, โ€œletโ€™s find you a dress for this charity ball.โ€

Amber strolled around before stopping at a particular spot. โ€œWhat about this one?โ€

Amber pulled out a dress I hadnโ€™t worn since marrying Noah. It was an over-the-shoulder black piece with a skirt that fell a few inches above the knee. Best of all, the folds would hide my lack of curves resulting from my recent bulimic behavior.

โ€œIf you wear it, youโ€™ll definitely infuriate Noah,โ€ Amber said with aโ€ฆ

I laughed. โ€œGood choice.โ€ I held the fabric, running my thumb along the smooth silk. โ€œI think this will be fun.โ€
