Chapter 0183
Hannah
Viona and I exchanged wary glances as Scott approached. Despite myself, I slid over to allow him to sit with us, even though my heart was pounding.
โScott,โ I said, trying to keep my tone even, โI havenโt seen you in a while. Where have you been?โ
Scott sighed and ran a hand through his hair as he slid into the booth beside me. It was true; I hadnโt seen him in weeks.
โNoah sent me overseas, actually,โ he replied, sipping his beer.
โOverseas?โ I exchanged another glance with Viona, who was practically digging her fingernails through her glass, gripping it so tightly. โWhy did he send you overseas?โ
He raised an eyebrow. โYou donโt know?โ
I gaped at him. โNo, Scott,โ I said sarcastically. โI donโt know anything about my husbandโs antics. I thought you would have gathered that by now.โ
Scott cringed visibly and ruffled his hair again, taking a long drag of his beer. Beneath the table, Viona kicked my ankleโit was all I could do not to yelp in pain and surprise. But when I met her gaze, I saw the whites of her eyes and knew exactly what she was thinking.
How much had Scott heard? And how much trust could we place in him if heโd heard about the pregnancy?
When Scott finished his drink, he set his glass down and wiped his mouth with a napkin. โI probably shouldnโt tell you,โ he said, causing me to narrow my eyes, โbut I will.โ
โOkay. Spill.โ
Scott sighed. โNoah sent me abroad to look for your family doctor. Said he was missing and that he left underโฆ mysterious circumstances.โ
Mysterious circumstancesโฆ I furrowed my brow, thinking back to the day Iโd discovered our family doctorโs sudden leave of absence and the incident involving WhiteRabbit. Iโd all but forgotten about it, though it lingered in the back of my mind. But most importantly, what was Noahโs reason for wanting to find our family doctor? Whatever it was had to be a pretty big deal if he was sending his own Beta and half-brother overseas to hunt him down.
โWhy did he send you?โ Viona blurted out, asking my question for me. โI donโt mean that in a bad way, Scott. It just seems weird that heโd send his own Beta away to look for a doctor.โ
Scott glanced at Viona and shrugged. โBeats me. He just told me I had to find him.โ
โAnd? Did you?โ I asked.
He shook his head. โNo. I looked all over, followed every lead. Showed up at every hotel in the area, asked every local, tracked down every last scrap of CCTV footage. The guy justโฆ disappeared.โ
Disappeared. Just like WhiteRabbit.
I opened my mouth to ask Scott more questions, but it was obvious heโd told us all he knew. With a heavy sigh, I exchanged one last glance with Viona and took a sip of my drink.
โWellโฆ welcome back,โ I said, raising my glass.
โIโm glad to be back. Although, itโs a lot colder here,โ Scott laughed. There was a pause as we all sipped our drinks, and then he continued. โI didnโt mean to eavesdrop earlier, by the way. I just heard you mention that you had to talk to Noah about something.โ
Viona kicked my ankle again. This time I couldnโt contain my yelp, eliciting a curious glance from Scott.
โItโs nothing, Scott,โ I said with a wave of my hand. โItโsโฆ personal.โ
โOh.โ His eyes flickered between me and Viona. โWell, if thereโs anything I can do to helpโฆโ
I paused, ready to tell him thanks-but-no-thanks, but then thought better of it.
